      SERIOUSLY! That entire family is just doing something right. I cant wait to see what happens with Tamera's kids and Tamar's son. I wonder what type of people they will be! And I wonder if any of the other three will spawn children, haha.

      Irene C Right girl! That's what I mean. But people always just say they're smarter & geniuses. Uh yeah...Because they had a bed & school books in their room & that's it. I will be that way with my kids. I will push them way harder than my parents pushed me. That's what breeds success. Not slacking on them. My dad was so soft (So kind & sweet & still didn't tolerate things) But soft. He'd ground me & let me out that same night. God love him. But Asians just don't play. And that's why most doctors are Asian.

    I agree with all of them wholeheartedly. I didn't hear anyone however mention the power of positivity and manifestation. My mom always told me I was the smartest kid in the class even when I didn't feel I was or I wasn't in reality. But she taught me to speak it into existence until I ended up being the smartest kid in the class. Of course I worked hard and she provided me with the necessary tools and resources to do so, but I can't imagine I would have been as successful if she didn't teach me to believe in myself despite what my reality presented me.

    I agree with Tamera and Tamar on this. It is true that there will always be someone out there that is smarter, prettier, and more successful than you but you just have to do the best that you can be so that you can succeed in this life. My parents taught me that as well. And the reason why Asians are very successful in school and overachievers is because their parents are constantly pushing them to be great and aim high for everything and Asians are very hard workers and they are very disciplined when it comes to their work. That's not just an Asian thing, that's also a Caribbean and an African thing as well because Caribbean and African parents are always on their children to do better and they push them so hard to succeed in everything they do and they work very hard.

Similarly, if an American of any race settles in another country, chances are they and or their children will perform well.

I think their needs to be a balance I'm glad she pushes me but I don't think it should be so hard. U should also try to take care of ur child's needs & ask the, what they want to do instead of push them to be so successful that they aren't happy

    Loni, no need to get defensive. Jeannie made a very valid point. There's a reason why Asians are considered a model minority. Simply put, it's what they prioritize-family, education, culture, faith etc are all intertwined. Education is HUGE. It you're a first generation American, chances are your immigrant parents were the hardest working people you knew who not only navigated a whole new country/language/culture but did so while preserving their heritage and values.

    • @imancampbell3207

    • @VONiiE8
      @VONiiE8 9 років тому +6

      But so do Africans. So I mean??? If she got defensive, then hey. It was only fair bc Jeannie made it seem like Asians are the only race where, if you're a first gen. American citizen, that you were given a lot of pressure to succeed.

    • @priyas9751
      @priyas9751 9 років тому +6

      VONiiE8 No she didn't. Jeannie is speaking from her personal experience growing up an Asian American. What she said is statistically true; Asian Americans tend to be more educated. The African American culture is very different from the African immigrant culture.

    • @SuperGinrummy
      @SuperGinrummy 9 років тому +1

      @imancampbell maybe you are right, but the tone and delivery of how she reacted to Jeannie's comment had some subtle defensive undertones. In any case, I commented mostly because I appreciated Jeannie's contribution to the conversation since I could relate. ✌️

    • @VONiiE8
      @VONiiE8 9 років тому +6

      She said things like "when I say Asian, I mean pan Asian" I doubt her experience as a Vietnamese bred Asian can relate to that of a Iraqi bred Asian lbr here. But, like I said, so do Africans. I know Africans who were under so much pressure to be a doctor or lawyer because they were first gen. in America. And I never mentioned African American, as in ~I'm black and I'm GENERATIONS in~, I said African as in, ~my parents have a thick ass accent that I can mimic and/or speak my respective African dialect~. I never thought or even gave the impression that I thought African and African American cultures were the same. I never even mentioned the term African American, where did that even come from? Now, let me clarify, I don't think that's how she meant to come off, but that's how she did and I can see why people were offended.

I wasn't ready fro the real world because I was to gullible, I thought that people spoke the truth and didn't deceive and manipulate others for their own advantage. I learned that the hard way, and so when I have children I will be honest, and keep to my promises like my parents did. However, I will inform them of such people and teach them how to spot them so that they wouldn't have to go through what I did.

    The American parent would say "it's okays its just a silly test you are still great." While the Chinese parent told their child "you did good but let's study alittle bit what you missed and make you do better."

It's not easy but it's the best way for a child to transition to a mature responsible adult. It's gotta be at the right time though!!!

    I completely agree with the ladies. I didn't experience my first real failure until I was 22 years old and it was completely devastating! I would have been much more prepared for the ups & downs of real life if I had experienced & overcome some failures as a child. I'm 35 now and honestly, I still struggle with accepting failure. Don't get me wrong, I was by no means spoiled as a child. I've always worked REALLY hard at everything I do, but I got used to the notion that hard work always led to a successful outcome and that's just not realistic.

    There's always someone better than you, but if you work towards what you want to achieve and achieve that goal all those other people that are better than you wouldn't matter anymore. I always say don't look at other people, but focus on yourself and your own goals. That's what parents should tell their kids, to work hard for what they want.

      Zazwa1 her statistics are actually incorrect as usual. Jeanie speaks things that are not correct at times. In mine Sociology class we learned that thinking Asians or pan Asians like she said our smart is actually a stereotype. Yes they do push their children to do better but that doesn't necessarily make them smarter. My sociology teacher was Asian she was Taiwanese.

    I don’t like when parents punish their kids for a grade lower than an A. Like what is with people freaking out “omg I got a B+ on my exam my parents are going to kill me!” Like if my child got a c+ on an exam, and I know they applied themselves to the fullest, we’re celebrating! sure do better in the future but, even if they failed miserably, I can’t imagine grounding them. Sure summer classes but I’m not going to take away their entire summer vacation.

    I am Hispanic, not Asian. Yet, I see statistically Jeannie is right Asians push their children to strive for success. I think it was childish how the panel glossed over the issues that truly affect minorities. Traditionally, Hispanics and African-Americans do not have a high-level of expectation for themselves, and statistics show that many never graduate from high school or ever get a chance to go to college. These are facts that must be addressed, but I guess the show is not willing to go there.

    I agree with the soccer, sports thing tho, I prefer to play for fun, and in life, come success or failure, I want to enjoy whatever it is I'm striving for, I don't compete with others, I only compete with myself, which goes with Tamera's Be the best you can be. Because that's what got me into my 1st choice college. My College Essay I wrote, I've failed countless times, but I never give up, and eventually I will succeed. I may not have a perfect 3.0 or 4.0 GPA, I'm proud of my 2.4 and that shouldn't determine whether or not I should be accepted to the school or define my path to graduate with a degree.

    I think this depends on the type of child you are raising.. Some children require extra pressure because its the only way you can really get them to show their A game. But there are some kids that don't require that much pressure because they are already hard on themselves and if you add too much more onto what they already tell themselves, it could break them down or push them into overload when they are already operating at full capacity..
    When it comes to preparing your kids for the world, there's too much that needs to be taught and you will never get it right on your own because you don't know what kind of future your child is going to lead.. You can pressure them in one area, and be overly concerned about it, and then next thing you know when they are of age, they are driven to pursue a completely different walk of life.
    Its really a faith thing for me.. Each child I have has had a different temperament, needing different rules, direction and instruction, and without the grace of God and my faith in the Lord, I would have never had a clue about how to raise my kids.. God made them and He knows exactly what He created them to do both now and in the future.. I take it day by day with prayer and constantly seeking God for direction to ensure that I am raising children equipped for their own generation and not for mine or my parents'..

    I don't believe anyone is better than me because there is only one me and my mother always said to compare myself to myself in order to well better myself. if someone gets an a on a test and I get a d, I will be happy for that person, but I know I need to step my game up. I agree with the ladies though. my mom strived to give me and my sister what we always wanted. my mom never failed to deliver, but with everything we were given it was due to good grades or helping out the community. we're not spoiled, but we are reminded to work even harder. I need to work hard to give back my mom even an inch of what she's given me. the Lord only knows how thankful I am for my mommy!!

    I like how they just dismissed Jeanie like that. She wasn't trying to say that Asians kids are the ONLY ones that work hard, she was citing a TRUE statistic. Statistically, areas that have high Pan-Asian IMMIGRANTS have some of the BEST public schools, with some of the HIGHEST test scores and grades! I think it has a lot to do with that "tiger-mom" and Immigrant mentality. I know personally, when I was growing up, My parents didn't comprehend the idea of me going to hang out with friends multiple times in the same month, or going out to dinners, or Prom or any of that... It is hard for them to relate, because you cant say "weren't you a kid once?" Because MY parents grew up in asia, without clean clothes or properly running water. My father didn't even have electricity for most of his childhood, and shared a room with 5 siblings. When A LOT of these immigrants come to the states they only know ONE THING.... Hard work + good grades leads to HIGH education and well paying jobs... THAT is why Asian parents are always pushing their kids to excel. Also, as Jeanie mentioned, some kids crack under this pressure... while other kids SOAR. Not saying that they are the best kids, because many of them end up becoming socially awkard, or only personable around OTHER asians, which can hinder them in other parts of life. Needless to say, Jeanie was onto something, but like many things Jeanie says, they are Shot down by Loni or Tamar.... Even if they aren't DIRECTLY trying to shut her down, they still do, haha.
