What's better than one Merlin? Eight Merlin's!

4,000 Merlins was the magic number.

0:18, The different Mid Upper Turrets of the two aircraft helps with the ID of the Canadian aircraft, its Mid Upper is further forward as it has twin .50 brownings in a Martin 250CE turret, it was located further forward to help maintain the centre of balance of the aircraft.

I very much enjoyed watching these two flying at Clacton Air Show back in 2014 and the sight and sound is unforgettable. Fitting tributes to all the aircrew and ground crews who built and flew them and to those that made the ultimate sacrifice.

Indeed. This was the first time that I'd ever seen one Lancaster, let alone two. It literally was a hair raising experience!

So when is the old girl at Motat getting an overhaul so we can have one that flies too?

I saw them fly over at Dunsfold, the Top Gear airfield, totally agree they made a great sight. One commentator corrected the other over the engines. Apparently the Canadian plane didn't have Merlin engines, it had Pratt &Whitney or similar as it was built in Canada.

They're all Merlins, but yes, the Canadian Lanc probably has Packard-built Merlins, as opposed to the Rolls Royce-built merlins in the BBMF aircraft. Packard built a great many Merlins under licence during the war.

And don’t forget the Lancaster “Just Jane” out of the UK. She’ll be airworthy in a couple of years. 👍
