  • Navajo Grandma explains what ingredients she uses in her Navajo frybread /
    Dah Díníilghaazh and why.
    The Links below are what I have used in my videos. I chose to use avocado oil however, traditionally many use Lard for oil.
    Hi to all my Grandchildren subscribers. I want to caution you when using the Avocado oil, it is very very heat sensitive, I would keep it on low high, close to medium, let it heat up. Remember grandma made a tiny ball to put in the oil to test if its too hot or not. If it turns brown instantly, do not use it yet, turn it down. Its worth the wait. Once your little ball of dough turns brown in more time, then it is ready. I wish each of you could come to my kitchen and actually see what I mean. Just be extra careful. Love to all!! Hugs from Navajo Grandma

    Oh Navajo Grandma, I'm a trucker who's actually made fry bread with these ingredients in my truck, (messy but GOOD!!) My ears perked & a smile came to my face when you ended with "10-4." 😉 Keep on "roll'n" with ur good vids, over-n-out.

      Oh Fish, you just gave an awesome comment. Without our truckers, we all would be eating dirt. You all are so important thank you for your service through rain, sleet and snow we see you all driving even scary roads and ice and still get through. I pray for those at times who's rigs turn over. I always pray for you all because I know how important you all are. Its not an easy drive, but you all do it. I got lost one time in California, pulled over in Bakersfield, I was crying in my car because I was trying to get to a place where my son was having a reception. This trucker told me I was going to be alright, he had finished his stop, then said follow me. I had no fear but felt that he was a good man who did want to help me. He honked where I needed to get off the road, after he instructed me my road map. God bless this dear truck driver. I got to where I needed to go in peace and sooner than I had imagined. God bless our truckers!!!! Hugs. Navajo Grandma

    Moderation!!! Haha! When my children were small all we had was oil, flour, baking powder and salt. We lived off fry bread. A woman I knew lived a couple miles away. I would pack a baby on my back, another in a stroller the rest in foot to walk to her house for herbs from her yard to season my frybread so it wouldn’t always be plain. I’d grind up the rosemary and herbs use less water so it wasn’t as elasticity in the dough. People would come over and compliment my fried chicken. It was just an altered frybread to be denser seasoned with herbs I gathered.
    I rarely ever make frybread now because of the times it was almost every meal we ate for a long time.

    • @NavajoGrandma
      @NavajoGrandma  5 місяців тому

      Oh I adore your comment. I can just see you walking there with your baby on your back, you sound just like me back in those days, and yes we ate lots of carbs dealing with life thru some poor times they say. Although we were utterly happy and didn't know we were poor, but the happy times included these yummie foods. My son said to me tonight, I love my Hawaiian foods but there is nothing like your cooking Navajo foods mom, its better than any thing I eat and miss it but I need to be careful now. I thought that was a nice comment as we hardly had anything, we had to use as less than less. If you know what I mean. Great lovely comment. I love you so and your example. I love herbs too. I watched your videos on fry bread and made it for the first time. It took some figuring out how to spread the dough by tossing it on your fist and back to the other open hand. The first bread was small in diameter and they got bigger when I got to the end. Now they kind of have a funnel cake type taste and smell but more thick than a funnel cake. It's easy to make and not too bad whipping up. Fry bread is really good hot out of the oil. Then I cooked some ground beef. Got refried beans and salsa and topped the taco with cheese. You eat two tacos, well you are full.

    Great video and thank you for sharing your ingredients to making a healthier fry bread. I grew up with it and back in those days we never thought much about the type of ingredients that would have a negative effect on our body. I agree with you on the Bluebird flour, it's a good flower to use to make fry bread. I'm going to try your ingredient suggestion and I'm sure it'll work for healthier lifestyle and maintain the Navajo Tradition.

      Westly, why thank you (a big fat axhehee) for looking at this video. Be careful using the types of oil because the avocado oil is a very high point oil. You get that warm and its super hot. I tell others although it is a wonderful product, keep it warm and then move the heat up slightly and carefully. Its not like regular oils but very healthy. Thats if you think of using that oil, its very very expensive. I used it and almost lit my frybread to ashes instantly. That is called a high point oil. I also have gone to a natural food store to ask for other oils that are at a medium point and see what they advize. I appreciate that you see my point in this and how important it is for all of us in any cooking we do. Our bodies are sacred and we are intelligent enough to eat in moderation and not just buy junk food and think its healthy. The levels of salt in McDonald's and other go to places is awful. Then people add salt and jalapeno to it and good luck with your blood pressure and heart rate, it happens so quick as we are enjoying it our way. No more. I pray we all realize these wonderful ways of eating better. Naneeskadi is a better way to go as well as you are not frying you are baking on the grill. So much to learn and healthy. Keep up the good work.

    Hi Grandma! I just want to comment on the Hain salt. I live in Georgia now and the humidity is usually so bad you risk drowning just taking a breath. I've used Hain salt for years but when I moved here it quickly became caked and rock hard from the humidity. You need a hammer and chisel every time you want to use it. I bought some Manishewitz kosher sea salt and it flows and tastes great. It doesn't have anti-caking stuff like the Mortons but still doesn't get hard. However it's not iodized. Just wanted to share my experience.

    I have seen Blue Bird flour but never knew it was THAT good a product! Thankyou! Being diabetic, I use almost no flour for things I fix for myself😭. But I do baking for pot lucks and yes, Banok, Ojibwe frybread, so this is great to know! I use Avocado Oil. Good stuff! As for HYDROGENATED anything, it is a killer, a real artery clogger. I understand it has been banned in Europe because it is so bad! Check European imported foods and you won't find it in the products. But we're still using it here. Any heart or diabetic class will tell you to AVOID AT ALL COST! That goes for HYDROLYZED as well. Even "Partially". Interestingly enough , tasting products not containing this stuff, I have not seen any difference in taste, texture, looks or anything. So, why are they still using it??As a shelf life extender, if that is why it's used, that wont fly with me. Freezing, drying, canning, or if it gets that old, throw it out! I feel it is unnecessary ingredient and a killer.(When will they ever learn?)

      You sure are welcome and yes it is up to us to help or to be an example. Thank you for your concern for better health it is more than appreciated. I use to hear these words "if you don't have your have nothing." Thus it is more true than anything. Thank you so much. Also remember there is moderation in all things as well. You can eat thru moderation in being wise what you ingest and chewing your food slowly, etc. It should take every person about 30 minutes to eat what they have. And that is not a hogs helping. Eat moderately.
      Hugs. Navajo Grandma

      You are right, it doesn't matter. But what I meant is that fry bread isn't a "typical" food here, so I never cooked before...I hope it turns out edible lol. ❤️

      @@johnlaird6541 You have such a cute way of expression that if you were here I would just give you the biggest hug!! I love the way you are my dear John. Oh my grandpa & I had lamb steaks with our frybread and we almost thought we had died and gone to heaven. The LOU SPECIAL sounded SUPER!! How darling!! Don't start on the following morning food, I love cold pizza the following morning and also my stuffing - heaven and earth!! Glad your thanksgiving was wonderful!! Gpa & I had eaten something & had a little upset tummie, decided Saturday would be our Tazhii day. We had cream of wheat for breakfast, cream of chicken for supper, then later watching a couple of movies, we snitched a piece of pumpkin pie with whipped cream. Oh my again, it was good. Today we are putting up some Christmas which I love!!! I went to the stores and its like a rampage of people galore so I left. Congestion doesn't sit well with me when you return from the Rez. There is ultimately no one there. LOL!! Well grandma loves you and your awesome comments. I just love your personality!! No wonder your wife nabbed you!! With hugs & love, Navajo Grandma
