      0.068 microfarad capacitor
      Add it to the middle connection on your volume pot
      Then attach the other side to a ground point (like the square metal cans you see in your radio)

    Great video--hard facts and provides good opportunities to talk about the little things that can help performance and/or frustrate the heck out of your CB fun. If you have an outdoor antenna--and the body of a car is "outside"--then at the least, there will be static charges that build up on the hot side (the radiating element) and the low/ground side (base, coax shield, connectors, and the car body itself). At the most serious, a nearby lightning strike will induce a dangerous charge on an outdoor antenna. As those static charges rise and fall, or discharge to the ions in the air, you will hear noise in the radio. A well developed charge can zorch (technical term) the front end of the receiver and ruin some of the vulnerable parts on the circuit board. It's best to ground the radio for this reason. Ground everything that is supposed to be at ground potential to the same "ground"--something that acts as a ground--that is, that will act like the earth and absorb surplus + or - charges. Not easy. The car/truck body is big and metal, but it's floating on (you guessed it) RUBBER tires. So do the best you can. At home, ground to the ground on your power supply (is that the negative terminal, the ground lug, the chassis, or all of those?) . Careful: If the negative terminal is floating then determine how to properly ground it (because the radio's negative connection is probably grounded inside the radio. Everything that is supposed to be "low" should be at the same exact zero voltage--that's zero voltage DC, too. Then you don't have noisy--and dangerous--static discharges. The comment about mag mount antennas is right: the antenna base is not necessarily DC-grounded to the car body. So, neither would the antenna coax be at DC ground, either. Fix that. By the way, it's hard to find a good connection to the mass of the car body for grounding purposes inside a typical car or truck. (For example, the car door isn't necessarily connected adequately to the rest of the car body, despite being mounted via the hinges to the car body!} So putting a radio in a car or truck with proper consideration for noise, static grounding and suppression of common mode currents getting back into the radio involves numerous, pesky (technical term) challenges. Again, great video--brings up important, beneficial considerations for good performance.

    A 4 y.o. video, I hope you are still active to this page. I have my radio, a 50 foot RG8X coax, a fiberglass antenna on a mirror mount thats on a tripod freestanding in the yard, and the radio is powered by a lead acid 12 volt car battery, and the only thing connected to the battery is this radio. I do not even connect the battery to the battery charger until the radio is turned off. All of the equipment is new,Radio (President George FCC) new coax, mount...but the SWRs are 2.5 to 3.0. But when I run a separate wire from the battery NEG terminal to the antenna base the SWRs drop to 1.8 to 2.7. In this video you say to ground the radio, but to what. Battery is free standing, as is the radio and also the antenna. Any help would be appreciated.

    • @JohnnyNJones
      @JohnnyNJones  2 місяці тому

      RF ground and DC ground are not quite the same thing that can become pretty complicated. It’s understandable that you are having issues. This is just part of owning CB radios haha.
      You don’t want the battery hooked to the antenna, neither will be grounded then.
      I would suggest removing that wire from the battery but leaving it connected to the antenna base. Keep lengthening that wire in a straight line until it’s long enough that the SWR drops.
      I would also urge you to check out my video on my custom antenna build using nothing but wire.
      If you would like to ground your Radio or your antenna, you can use a ground rod about 8 foot in the ground made of copper to get a good earth connection.
      But it’s not something that you have to do. It will still work without being grounded at all.

    The circuit board in a cb radio is "floating" so it can be used in either positive or negative ground vehicle, if your cb is "home base" you can connect the ground on the pcb and then a earth ground to get rid of noise.

    I have a lot of noise on my truck c.b. radio. But the radio is grounded through the mounting bracket isn't it? And the antenna is grounded through the bracket isn't it? Would it still need another ground wire? I need to lose some of this engine noise for sure...

    • @JohnnyNJones
      @JohnnyNJones  3 роки тому +1

      The bracket if it’s connected to the steel body of the truck and is firmly connected to the radio could act as an RF ground.
      But they’re often times painted or covered in an oxide layer and not really touching the radio other than through maybe through the screw
      So I would say it’s going to be kind of difficult to get a really good ground with just the mounting bracket you could easily run a wire from one of the screws on your radio to whatever grounding point you have and that should take care of noise
      If that doesn’t work then try using a noise filter which you can buy online, It’s a small box that you run your hot and ground through and it will filter any noise that you may have coming through your power cable (Which causes a lot of noise on its own)
      And of course you could always use a balun to stop common mode RFI
      However if you don’t know what a Balun is it may be hard for me to explain how to make it. There is a lot of information out there that can help you and I hope you get this problem sorted out because no one likes a Noisey radio!
