  • THIS VIDEO CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR RHYTHM OF WAR
    Kaladin Stormblessed from the Stormlight Archive is my favorite character of all time. Kaladin is part of Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere from the series The Stormlight Archive, which takes place in a world called Roshar. He goes through struggles and trials, facing many obstacles along his way. Even though he becomes a Windrunner of the Fourth Ideal in the Knights Radiant, it isn't enough to solve the many problems he has to deal with. This is a video discussing why I think he's such an amazing character, and what makes him so real and inspiring.

      I've suffered from depression as well, and so Kaladin really resonates with me. Shallan resonates more, though, I think, because my depression stems from questions about my identity, and that is Shallan's core struggle in the books.

    Kaladin is my Favorite characher and the one who have make me cry of sadness and Happiness on the same book, when he had a breakdown in his room after Dalinar Relieve him from the charge of being the Windrunner's Leader, and, in the end of Rhythm of War, when he jump from Urithiru with the intention of finally killing himself, and then he had the conversation with Tien and finally Accept that there would be those he can not protect, at that point I was crying on my bed, and then piercing the darkness like a Spear, A Lance of Light, Kaladin Stornbressed, Reborn. That is probably the best and the most exciting moment I have ever experienced in any media

    Yes, Kaladin is the whole reason I became so invested with this series. Being diagnosed with Bipolar 2 disorder, I know those endless wells of destructive depression intimately. But it was Teft that caught me off guard. Didn't think Brandon would accurately portray addiction and chemical dependency so we'll. It's like Teft was copying the thoughts I had from being in the throws of the addiction to being free of it for the first few months. Never felt much of a connection with Teft. Not until tht very scene. He is definitely a very close second to Kaladins first place position.

    I have to thank you and and Ms. Merphy Naiper both for introducing me to Stormlight archives. I recently started the books and there's this one Kaladin moment in Way of the Kings that resonated with me. It's when Kaladin almost commits suciede in the beggining of way of kings, almost throwing himself off a cliff. I have been there, in that metaphosrical cliff, alone with only my demons to torment me. I saw myself in how utterly broken and desperate the man feels after failing. But what made me cry... It was Syl's innocence when she brought Kaladin a poisonous leaf. It was her small voice filled with hope and knowledge of who Kaladin was, pushing him into giving one last try that made me cry for the character. Mind you, I haven't cried for a protagonist character in a long time, but something about Kaladin standing up to fight another day, even when he wants to give up, resonated with me. It is this small relationship and this small push, that made me eager to read Kaladin's story and see if this struggler gets to live a better life.

    When Kaladin all but recruited Azure's guards and Adolin was like "*sigh... Of course. He's probably their leader now!"
    One of the funniest moments in Sanderson's books for me 😂

  • @GerryBolger

    Man that interlude from Lirin's perspective is a maelstrom of emotion. I was never fond of Lirin, partly due to his intense passivity, but mainly due to his bull-headed refusal to see things from other's point of view. Sure, as a surgeon he has an appropriate level of empathy. But his absolute refusal to deviate from his own point of view is infuriating.
    This is the chapter where his stubbornness begins to subside, giving was to a more realistic approach to his situation. Later on, we see Lirin with the shash brand painted on his forehead. Beautiful payoff by Sanderson.
    And Noro.... There's not much I can say that you didn't in this video. He is the embodiment of the morale boost Kaladin has provided people for most of his life, whether Kal knew it or not.
    It's such an amazing chapter, Brandon Sanderson continues to blow my mind.

    Two cosmere characters I think make interesting parallels are Kaladin and Kelsier. (spoilers for Mistborn and Secret History) Both are natural leaders, both were slaves at one point, both were royally screwed over by the ruling class, and both are considered by many to be living legends who have to live with the weight of their reputation. However, I think one thing most of all connects these two: whether by their own choice or not, both of these men are SURVIVORS, when everyone else around them falls, they survive, they keep going and they don't fall, not completely. They may have scars, both metaphorical and literal, but they always survive, they always continue. In fact, they are often defined by their scars, Kaladin with his Shash brand and Kelsier with his scars on his arms. Even though they may lose everyone around them, Kaladin lost Tien and some of his closest friends, while Kelsier lost Mare and then almost everyone he ever loved, including nearly his whole crew and Vin, the daughter he never had.

    • @henryward5457
      @henryward5457 Рік тому +6

      I feel like Kaladin was written when Sanderson had more experience and so came out much better written. Also their stories diverge. Speaking in Ideals terms, my opinion is that Kelsier as we see him could never swear the Third Ideal, "I will protect even those I hate." For me, this was the moment when Kaladin surpassed Kelsier, completely and totally.

Kaladin is broken and cant forgive himself because Tien will never come back to life. If he decides to protect someone and they die anyway it just shatters him even more. Weak. Failure. I bet he can't speak the 4th Ideal because it would involve him forgiving himself for his past failures either completely or partially. I doubt he ever gets there without Tien and probably his father too. He even almost failed his bond with Syl. Sando is the G.O.A.T. Kaladin is my spirit animal. #emotionaldamage

    Here is an honest review of your video. The visuals were quite good, very clean transitions, awesome artwork. Loved the printing words to really drive home major points.
    Your voice over wasn't bad. Easy to listen too, but you did go a bit fast. I found myself being tugged along to the next point before I could fully digest the previous point.
    Now for some constructive critism. I think you missed a very big conclusion about Kaladin. He isn't a man that's failed time after time after time. He's a man that succeeds in everything he does, does it right, the right way, and still loses. He feels that he is cursed. He does everything right, but no matter how hard he tries, how right he is, he loses. He believes he is cursed. That no matter how many things he does correctly, in the end, it doesn't matter because it will always be taken from him. Its one thing to fail to someone else being better, faster, stronger, or even luckier. Its quite another to straight up beat your opponent only to have the ref declare him the victor over you. And that is a much bigger difference than failing

    • @HarshReviews
      @HarshReviews  3 роки тому +4

      Hey, thanks for the advice! I’ll keep it mind! But I do kinda disagree with you. I see your point, but the thing is at the end of the day he does believe he failed. If you do everything right but get the wrong result, you will still believe it to be a failure. Well maybe not you, but I think Kaladin perceived it that way. As a reader we don’t think he failed because he did everything right, but thinking from his perspective, I would say otherwise. But I see your point! I’ll make sure to work on the pacing as you said!

    • @TumblinWeeds
      @TumblinWeeds Рік тому

      I think I disagree with that. That was his arc in the first book. Kaladin believed he was cursed to fail by fate, because everything he did failed even when he tried his best. Wit helped him realize he was running from responsibility. He had made himself believe the curse to absolve him of the guilt of the past, and the possibility he could do something now. It gave him an excuse to not try.
      After accepting responsibility for his past failures, Kaladin gains the will to believe again that he can succeed if he were good enough, but he is also burdened with the flip side of that, the idea that all failures were because he wasn’t good enough. That is his arc for the next few books. To realize that he is not cursed, he can help, but he is not to blame for everyone who dies.

    I find the parallels that the audiobook listeners and the novel readers have peculiarly interesting. Some of your pronunciations are off while my spelling of many words were off too. I had no idea Dallinar was spelled with a D, I thought it was spelled with a G.
    I'd suggest you listen to them, hearing their voices and the passion invoked in the characters, the personality each is given... I'm sure you'll love them even more. Rock, Lopen, Teft, and Dallinar have so much more personality and depth to them

    You said "Stormlight is one of the 2 stories that has impacted your life" which is the other one? Haikyu? One Piece?

    I wish Moash hadn't joined Kaladin and had given up and jumped into the Honor Chasm at the start. Then he wouldn't have done... the thing that I won't spoil, even though the video probably spoils it anyway. If you've read RoW, you know what I'm talking about. If not- read it. Right now. Why are you a still reading this comment when you should be reading the Stormlight Archives? I don't care if you don't have it on hand- drive to a library. Right now. You heard me. And if your nearest library doesn't have it, go to the next one. Come all the way to Utah if you have too. Well? Get up. Go. Shoo.

    i do think kaladin is one of the best if not the best character in all fiction that i ever read , that is why i hate book 4, its the first b sanderson book i hate
    in book 1-3 there is some pattern to the story of kaladin always started in the most horrible sad state, yet through his determinations and the help of people around him he always stand back up no matter how devastated he suffer, and that almost bring tear to my eyes, and each book he grow, not only in power but also in character strength, each book his mentality keep getting stronger but suddenly .... he became a completely broken man ... again in book 4. I know i know its very suitable for the 4th oath SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    "I accept that there will be those I cannot protect" which is admittedly very very veerrryyy stick to the point of the story. But come on, to keep seeing him be a broken man over and over again, despite all his revival from all his depression in previous book just tiresome
    it remind me of my most hated harry prostitute book 5 order of porn, the entire book almost consist of harry being rape by delores umbridge and her follower + ministry of magic who suddenly become his mortal enemy despite being his most ardent supporter from book 1-4 . Dont get me wrong its not that i oppose an MC getting hardship, but not too much, harry already have his personal hell in the house of the dursley , that was his character building part, while hogwanker suppose to be where he shine, yet he was torture in that school too, what the fuck? the entire book its just like a torture porn, it should be called 50 shade of griffindor

      I mean that’s life. You don’t get to say “I’ve suffered enough, it should never happen again.” Sometimes it gets even worse. Then it gets better. Then it gets even worse than that and you can’t remember ever being happy. That’s how life is, for someone who’s literally in a war to end mankind, who’s best friend told him to kill himself, who is being tormented by a god, who is burdened by being the only man standing when no one else can.
      But it’s also like that for normal people, for everyone. Victims in childhood often attract more abusers, those in impoverished families grow up to be poor and uneducated. People who are beaten down are only beaten down further, and you can’t expect it to stop. But does that mean you just give up? Because it never stops? No, you get back up again, because life will not always be good, but it will get better again. That’s the story of book 4. Life will beat you down again and again, but you will be warm again.
