I'm convinced they only retconned Marlize and Clifford from being a loving couple to him brainwashing and abusing her because they realised the villains had a better relationship and marriage than the heroes.
Her character makes me so mad. I feel like she had so much potential and she was great up until Eddie died, then her character went down hill from there.

The writers really did a terrible job writing both Iris and the WestAllen relationship. They put too much of premium on abstractions like destiny and canon and they wrote them both happier and healthier with all their prior relationships. Barry and Iris say they love each other all day everyday but Iris fails almost every time: lying about falling in love with him when they were kids, wanting to leave Barry in the Speedforce, falsely accusing his mother of not being there for him, falsely accusing him of abandonment, saying “We’re the Flash” implying she’s had everything to do with his success as a hero when she’s done nothing, barging her way onto Team Flash as the leader. She’s the pits when it comes to characterization. I don’t believe a single word out of her mouth when she spouts niceties to other characters. The bitter irony of this clip is that the lady at the very end of it, Marlize Devoe, is a much better example of how to write the female half of a power couple: smart, intelligent, independent, introspective, badass. Amazing that in a single season the writers did a better job with a one-off season character illustrating the proper way to write a love interest than the 4 years they’ve had to try and get their main female character of Iris West right. They can’t do it. EVERY subplot, every trick, every re-write has failed with Iris: shaky educational background, random moments of her punching someone, got newspaper job via nepotism, was never at her job when she had it, never used her phantom reporting skills to assist the team, quit the job, insinuated herself as team leader via being married to the boss, then spent a full season stating the obvious and playing video-game controller with the powered heroes. And there’s no takebacks. You can’t have 4 seasons of a character being written (and I think also acted) poorly, then magically think they become legitimate once you start putting them somewhere they fit better. It doesn’t matter. Iris is simply a character that reeks of utter phoniness.
That's karma there. The writers stopped building Iris as a journalist in season 2 just like the US stopped playing soccer in the 1950's. Both are now trying to catch up with others. If they cared so much about Iris that much, the art of follow up for that character is one they should've stay with, thus avoiding the mess in seasons 3 & 4. Even GG himself said that WA would've started in much later seasons, but like I mentioned, the writers stopped working on Iris progress as an independent journalist.
Yeah, the writers spent a season saying that Iris needed to be saved to preserve the future where she writes the article of the Flash vanishing, but then as soon as she saved, she quits being a reporter, thus invalidating the reason why she needed to be saved. She hasn't been shown in 4 seasons to be a competent reporter, so we're supposed to believe she's going to eventually get her own byline? Not only is Iris' career based on the future, but so is the WestAllen relationship. It's like everything they are supposed to do that is important as individuals and a couple are being projected, but not supported realistically by the narrative.

Two times I genuinely hated Iris was when she sabotaged Barry and Linda's relationship by telling her that he liked her and flirting with him on a double date. Like, you had your chance and you let it go, he's been sitting back and watching you with Eddie for a year now. And when she looses it at Barry for leaving her, like he just seemed so happy for the first time in a while and she just goes off on him. Did she forget the city was going to be destroyed had he not left?
not only are season 1 and 2 the best because of writing and plots but they were the best simply because barry had love interests like linda, patty, and even caitlin, and iris wasn’t really a main character. none of them made me want to set myself on fire like iris did :p

The worst moment for me will always be when she said she fall in love with Barry when there where kids.. I mean I was so mad because it's like saying that she never really love Eddie.. and how could she forget that he was her first "hero" like she said in season 1 ! These past two season just act like Eddie never exist and it sucks because Iris and Eddie was a way better match.
Sometimes you may love pipo but don't expect them to feel the same then you move on but when they open up to you after you have moved on it is a hard paper. If Eddie didn't die Iris was was going to marry him and may be Barry would have married some one else. But since that wasn't the case it kind of gave them another chance. Trust me these things happen in real life. At least the writers gave respect to Eddie.
For me it was when Iris didn't care about what Barry thought about Nora secretly working with Thawne and she basically told Barry "You're just too sensitive for something that happened years ago, just move on"

Start with #5, if Iris truly believed what she said to Barry, she would've been happy that he found someone, at the very least supportive. But she probably didn't think that he would, given her reaction & what happened afterwards. But numbers 2 & 3 are the height of that hypocrisy because Iris knew darn well that Barry was in the SF during those 6 months & could've talked to either Joe, Wally, Cecile, Cisco & Harry, yet she didn't. Basically she gave up on Barry returning, unlike Cisco & others. When Barry came back, everyone took turns helping him out except for one person. This person let a samuroid take her as way of getting him out of his funk. Then couples therapy, how she uses this as a means to guilt trip him in front of a therapist & he couldn't get rebuttal because he have to reveal the truth behind it (his time as Flash), very disgusting. It was very rich of her to say that he saved the city while he was on trial, it would've saved others a lot of trouble later on. Come to think of it, she truly didn't cared if Wally or Jay went through another bout of misery in the SF just that she get that wedding sooner & was willing to let sacrificed central city to make that happen. But #1, Iris stabbed herself w/ Marize's sword & now wants her help . But Harry knew Marize was key in stopping Devoe first. Iris just didn't cared that Harry was losing half of his intelligence is what I found very appalling.
Let's not forget when she decided to berate Caitlin for being gone for 6 months totally disregarding the fact that Cait needed to fix herself and also deal with her guilt. But came back as soon as Cisco said they needed her to get Barry back.

Their whole reasoning for not doing it was BECAUSE of Olicity. Apparently there was more backlash than they anticipated so they decided to stick to canon with BI instead of giving us SnowBerry. The costume department still ships SnowBerry though. It's why they have coordinating outfits so often.
5) After this I really stopped liking Iris as a character. I mean she was with Eddie, who gave her the option to be with Barry which she turned down and chose him over Barry multiple times but she wasn't ok with Barry trying to move on after she rejected him and sabotaged his and Linda's relationship not once but twice and still had the gall to play innocent? Nope. I mean when she was being honest and turned him down it was painful to watch but she was honest and upfront about not seeing him that way. But to then send mixed signals and sabotage his attempts to move on while she's with someone else is just awful. It's one or the other, Iris, you can't have your fiance and expect you best-friend/foster brother to just pine over you forever. Just seems really shady to me. 4) See I could feasibly understand if they had done the Earth-2 doppelgangers being married in season 1 and her dismissing it, then the future article being brought up in season 2, that would have made some sense. But the way they did it? Yeah...no. Iris uses 'destiny' to describe her and Barry is laughable. Earth-2 Barry and Iris were completely different people with different life experiences that shaped who they were. And the article from the future is about the Flash going missing written hours after his disappearance by his wife who apparently isn't fazed by it. I can't help but wonder if Iris is clinging to them as 'destiny' because she might think it's her due after she said 'screw destiny' and she lost Eddie. Be with someone because you are in love with them, not because of something as intangible and malleable as 'destiny'. They've already proven that the future isn't set in stone, and will continue to show it in season 5, so does the "we're destiny" even stand up the smallest amount anymore anyway? 3) This right here...Cisco has been working for 6 MONTHS on a way to bring Barry back with some of the best and brightest minds they know but Iris just dismisses it. There is Iris, Barry's dad Joe, Barry's brother Wally and Barry's best friend Cisco whom he actually left in charge of the team in that room but no-one but Iris gets a say? They're all supposed to give up hope because she says has? They'd rather try everything conceivable and fail, then give up without trying anything. That right there shows why she doesn't really fit team Flash, let alone has what it takes to lead them. And the samaroid...yeah why have the smart people use science to help him bring together his fractured psyche, when you can just have Iris play 'damsel in distress' and it's system reboot...and then have her yell at him for *him* failing *her* by choosing to save the world without her permission when if it was up to her he would have still been in the speedforce. I still don't buy that no-one caught Iris saying "the Flash will come for me" on camera because it would have painted a bulls-eye on her back for anyone who wants to hurt the Flash. 2) I mentioned it above but, seriously? Not only does she unfairly call him out "Left me standing there all alone." with the remains of their family and his friends/team-mates while he went into the speedforce where nothing and no-one is real, but she did it in front of someone he couldn't really defend himself in-front of without exposing his superhero identity. She doesn't ackowledge that he did it to save the world from being destroyed because all she seems to care about is how it affects *her* .But I think that's kind of an over-arching trait of Iris'. She's primarily very selfish. Not only that I think she wants people to know Barry is the Flash and she's his wife. What she said with the samaroid. Calling him out at the therapists office. The things she said at his trial (I still can't believe her 'is saving the world a good reason?' crack when they didn't know but she did and yet she gave him shit for it. Where was that when he got home?), Iris *WANTS* people to know Barry is the Flash because she wants people to know she's the Flash's other half and for people to know "We are the Flash" and "There is no Flash without Iris West" because she wants the fame and attention that she thinks should come with being the Flash's S.O. 1)'We tried that with Savitar, it didn't work' slightly different, since Savitar would have blinked out of existence if he didn't kill Iris, but would have happened if the Thinker had just given up? And the things Iris said and did to Harry that episode...appalling would be putting it mildly. He was no longer of use to her so his opinions no longer meant anything to her unless he chased her down and *made* her listen and even then she takes full credit. All season 4 the writers have tried to convince us that Iris is this woman of wisdom who's words can turn a person to their side...and all I see is recycled pep-talks and a large amount of judgement and self-interest from Iris episode after episode. And yet people who have next to nothing to do with her give her credence when she hasn't earned it in the slightest. Why is Marlize, the brilliant woman and scientist, listening to the former barista/ former journalist who only has what she does because of her husband? Why did Killer Frost? WHY IS ANYONE LISTENING TO IRIS FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN PLOT REASONS? Oh right, they're not because that would require Iris to actually be more than a 2-dimensianal plot device/damsel in distress on the show. It took an entire episode of Harry trying to convince Iris Marlize wasn't a monster, and then actually being a smarter investigative journalist than her for Marlize to come to their side and yet Iris still probably thinks it was all her, and probably even gives herself props for doing it while having to 'watch over' Harry. "I believe in you." No Iris, you believe that either way Marlize helping the team will reflect well on you.
Iris is an incredibly hypocritical person. So she accused Barry of abandoning her even though she knew he actually saved the world, then turns around under her breath at a trial acknowledges he actually was saving the world? I mean, I knew all along that the "We're the Flash" proclamation was straight up garbage, but it's like the writers don't realize how awfully this character comes across onscreen. It just makes zero sense. She and everyone in the city would be dead and she knew it, and she wanted to leave Barry in the Speedforce as punishment. Huh? This person is supposed to be the Flash's lightning rod and rock? If I didn't know any better, I'd think Iris actually secretly hates Barry for being The Flash. And their relationship isn't complementary. It's just whatever Iris says goes. There is no compromise. In the end, she is always right. And I'm not lying when I say in every one of their confrontations, I was wholeheartedly rooting for Marlize over Iris! lol I don't care about Iris being the female "lead", Marlize is a much more likable character even as a villain. And some fans really think that WestAllen is a younger, healthier version of the Devoes! lol I guess they are completely overlooking the fact that Marlize is a brilliant scientist that supported her husband and never once tried to usurp his power or steal his thunder. SHE built his thinking cap. He actually wouldn't be the The Thinker without her. And when she saw him continuing to hurt innocent people, she not only tried to talk him out of it, but tried to stop him. Back in Season 3 when Barry was willing to let innocent people die just to save her, Iris just fell back in the ranks and was OK with him doing whatever it took to save her. Iris is a failed reporter that has no business being anywhere near StarLabs, much less leading Team Flash. No one invited her there. She just showed up everyday and is now in a position of power by being married to the boss. And now the show can boast 2 fleshed out, lovable female characters in Caitlin and Marlize and it's scary that Marlize ended up being so beloved by the fans after ONE season, while Iris can't get anybody to like her after 4 seasons. The Flash writers think Iris is going to be beloved just by popping up on screen every 3 minutes, but if she's doing nothing but being bitchy, manipulative, and a pest, that anatagonizes the fandom. What is really troublesome is that many fans are now trying to lump together all the female characters as being bad saying stuff like the show is pushing a feminist agenda and it doesn't know how to write female characters. NO, the show doesn't know how to write for one specific female character in Iris. The Girls' Night Out episode is being used as a smoke screen to make it seem like all the females are bad characters when Iris is the only bad one. EVERY female character that had significant things to do in Season 4: Caitlin, Marlize, Cecile, Amunet, Becky, you can say there's at least SOMETHING positive they contributed to the story, whether it be through feeling like fleshed out characters (Caitlin, Marlize) or just being funny (Cecile, Amunet, Becky). Yeah, there were moments when there were weak spots, but I can honestly say there were moments of natural humor and drama coming from these characters. With Iris, she never feels fleshed out, always feels shoved into every story. And she's supposed to be the most important female character, yet resonates as the least important.

@@Codex951 I finally stopped watch the show after Season 4 mostly because I couldn't take the bad writing (and in my opinion bad acting) for Iris. Maybe it was just the writing was so horrible that it affected the actress' ability to put forth a believable performance. It actually speaks to the fact that Iris is nothing more than a bad plot device character who only goes where the plot takes her. Basically, Iris never felt like a well-conceived character to me. I watched a few episodes into Season 5 to see if it would get any better, but the show just lost something after Season 2. Also, I really didn't care for the addition of Ralph Dibny, which is ironic given what's happening with him now. I just didn't think the guy was funny. And I really didn't like the addition of Nora West-Allen. The actress played the role like she was a pre-teen. It seemed like the show was being taken over from Barry by other characters who the writers were trying to force into the story as more important than him.

Ok so a thing about when Barry and iris fought about Barry taking nora back to the future, the fact that when Barry asked "and that doesn't bother you? And she had the audacity to reply with "no it doesn't" just because she is their child proves that she isn't fit for him.
And the writers and even some people wonder why fans of The Flash hate the Walter Allens romance and relationship (don't know if I spelled Barry's last name right) and why other fans, myself included, think Barry and Caitlin are the better pairing that should have happened/should be happening right now since Caitlin is more supportive of Barry, has always been there for him since they met, they both have amazing chemistry together, and the fact that they were each others own breaking points to the worse sides of each other if you go back and look back at every season minus season 4 (because the writers deleted the only scene that had Barry and Caitlin having a Snowbarry moment).
honestly at this point it isn't even about snowbarry, it's just that Iris and Barry simply are trash together because Iris is a piss-poor written character. and those are just the top five :D :D :D Never have I ever encountered a character that is as badly written :( Especially since season 2, she keeps changing her mind, feelings, ... every few minutes without any character development to support it. Even though this bugs me most if it's towards Barry (or Caitlin, Cisco or Harry), you can also really see it in her behavior towards her mother and towards Wally. Like in S3E8&9, first she is the one mad at Wally for using his powers and then she is defending him towards Joe when Joe is mad at Wally for using his powers. But there is no moment that supports this change of heart. It's just so incredibly frustrating to watch, so thank you for your video, it helps :)
R Emm regarding #2, it was one of those things that angered me a lot. It shows how ungrateful Iris can really be. To put himself into the SF to save central Central City & possibly even more while spending there all alone, yet Iris throws him under the bus like that. She has some nerve doing that. Let's not forget about episode 4x10 when Barry was falsely on trial; Iris being the"genius" that she is, tries to goad him into revealing his secret in front of everyone, real smart there 😒😒. Iris tries to take it upon herself to reveal Barry's identity. It also shows a reason why Joe told Barry into not to tell her about it back in the 1st season. Because she wants to be attached to him at all times.
I have said this once and I’ll keep saying it: iris is selfish and doesn’t belong here. No I don’t hate the actress as I think Candice is phenomenal but her character is infuriating. She blames Barry for going into the speed force like he had a choice. She also told him to do what he felt was right about saving his mom back in S1 and then yells at him cause he created flashpoint. Time and time again I honestly wonder if this is who Barry was meant to be with. And yeah I think Caitlin/Frost would be better for Barry. “But but but ice and cold don’t mix” yeah but polar opposites attract right? Plus Caitlin wouldn’t ever treat Barry like this. Only time I guess she did was in S3 but that’s because she was scared to become Frost.

I've never truly hated a canon couple until now- until I've seen these two that is. IW is a badly written character- I hated her since the moment she wiped that ketchup stain from Barry's face and tried to get between Barry and Linda. This video was from 3 years ago but let me say something in defence of Iris. 1.When Iris told Barry she wished him for someone who loves him for the amazing person he is, Barry hadn't confessed his feelings to Iris. Acting jealous is with Linda was understandable because she had hidden feelings before him since childhood but she never thought Barry would feel the same because they had grown together. This is also how Barry felt for Iris before confessing. He thought Iris didn't feel the same and this made the story long. 2.Iris was speechless when Barry said he loved her because Eddie was in her life and couldn't hurt him. If she had broke up with Eddie because Barry had confessed her feelings her character would show how cheap she was and you would still blame her. Her Silence meant she was confused. 3.When she confessed to Barry that she loved him it was after Barry had broken up with Patty( remember Iris told Barry to tell Patty she was the flash if he loved her) and also remember it is Barry who brought a recording from Eddie when he travelled in the past to help Iris get over Eddie. Barry wanted Iris to move on and with him. 4.She didn't steal Harry's idea, Harry helped her see how they could defeat thinker because he was loosing his intelligence and Everyone on the team knew that. We saw how Cecil helped him when he could no longer say scienfic words. 5.Being mad at Barry for leaving her even when she knew he saving the world was because Barry always tried to find solution before risking it all but he never considered options at this time it's like your husband running away from the alter before you say I do. She was hurt but I also agree their was some bad writing here. My opinion.
I was with you until you said Iris didn't steal Harry's idea. When Harry referred to Marlize as the key to defeating DeVoe,Iris called her a monster and all of the sudden after being convinced that Marlize could help defeat DeVoe,Iris convinced her as if it was her idea. Somebody told me that they tried to do female empowerment for Iris but they just made her a nagging, contradictory and hypocritical bitch. From the first minute she finds out he's Flash and shows some interest, she forces herself into everything. The writers really did a terrible job writing both Iris and the WestAllen relationship. They put too much of premium on abstractions like destiny and canon and they wrote them both happier and healthier with all their prior relationships. Barry and Iris say they love each other all day everyday but Iris fails almost every time: lying about falling in love with him when they were kids, wanting to leave Barry in the Speedforce, falsely accusing his mother of not being there for him, falsely accusing him of abandonment, saying “We’re the Flash” implying she’s had everything to do with his success as a hero when she’s done nothing, barging her way onto Team Flash as the leader. She’s the pits when it comes to characterization. I don’t believe a single word out of her mouth when she spouts niceties to other characters.
The bitter irony of this clip is that the lady at the very end of it, Marlize Devoe, is a much better example of how to write the female half of a power couple: smart, intelligent, independent, introspective, badass. Amazing that in a single season the writers did a better job with a one-off season character illustrating the proper way to write a love interest than the 4 years they’ve had to try and get their main female character of Iris West right. They can’t do it.
EVERY subplot, every trick, every re-write has failed with Iris: shaky educational background, random moments of her punching someone, got newspaper job via nepotism, was never at her job when she had it, never used her phantom reporting skills to assist the team, quit the job, insinuated herself as team leader via being married to the boss, then spent a full season stating the obvious and playing video-game controller with the powered heroes. And there’s no takebacks. You can’t have 4 seasons of a character being written (and I think also acted) poorly, then magically think they become legitimate once you start putting them somewhere they fit better. It doesn’t matter. Iris is simply a character that reeks of utter phoniness.
That's karma there. The writers stopped building Iris as a journalist in season 2 just like the US stopped playing soccer in the 1950's. Both are now trying to catch up with others. If they cared so much about Iris that much, the art of follow up for that character is one they should've stay with, thus avoiding the mess in seasons 3 & 4. Even GG himself said that WA would've started in much later seasons, but like I mentioned, the writers stopped working on Iris progress as an independent journalist.
Yeah, the writers spent a season saying that Iris needed to be saved to preserve the future where she writes the article of the Flash vanishing, but then as soon as she saved, she quits being a reporter, thus invalidating the reason why she needed to be saved. She hasn't been shown in 4 seasons to be a competent reporter, so we're supposed to believe she's going to eventually get her own byline? Not only is Iris' career based on the future, but so is the WestAllen relationship. It's like everything they are supposed to do that is important as individuals and a couple are being projected, but not supported realistically by the narrative.

Start with #5, if Iris truly believed what she said to Barry, she would've been happy that he found someone, at the very least supportive. But she probably didn't think that he would, given her reaction & what happened afterwards.
But numbers 2 & 3 are the height of that hypocrisy because Iris knew darn well that Barry was in the SF during those 6 months & could've talked to either Joe, Wally, Cecile, Cisco & Harry, yet she didn't. Basically she gave up on Barry returning, unlike Cisco & others. When Barry came back, everyone took turns helping him out except for one person. This person let a samuroid take her as way of getting him out of his funk. Then couples therapy, how she uses this as a means to guilt trip him in front of a therapist & he couldn't get rebuttal because he have to reveal the truth behind it (his time as Flash), very disgusting. It was very rich of her to say that he saved the city while he was on trial, it would've saved others a lot of trouble later on. Come to think of it, she truly didn't cared if Wally or Jay went through another bout of misery in the SF just that she get that wedding sooner & was willing to let sacrificed central city to make that happen.
But #1, Iris stabbed herself w/ Marize's sword & now wants her help . But Harry knew Marize was key in stopping Devoe first. Iris just didn't cared that Harry was losing half of his intelligence is what I found very appalling.
Let's not forget when she decided to berate Caitlin for being gone for 6 months totally disregarding the fact that Cait needed to fix herself and also deal with her guilt. But came back as soon as Cisco said they needed her to get Barry back.

5) After this I really stopped liking Iris as a character. I mean she was with Eddie, who gave her the option to be with Barry which she turned down and chose him over Barry multiple times but she wasn't ok with Barry trying to move on after she rejected him and sabotaged his and Linda's relationship not once but twice and still had the gall to play innocent? Nope. I mean when she was being honest and turned him down it was painful to watch but she was honest and upfront about not seeing him that way. But to then send mixed signals and sabotage his attempts to move on while she's with someone else is just awful. It's one or the other, Iris, you can't have your fiance and expect you best-friend/foster brother to just pine over you forever. Just seems really shady to me.
4) See I could feasibly understand if they had done the Earth-2 doppelgangers being married in season 1 and her dismissing it, then the future article being brought up in season 2, that would have made some sense. But the way they did it? Yeah...no. Iris uses 'destiny' to describe her and Barry is laughable. Earth-2 Barry and Iris were completely different people with different life experiences that shaped who they were. And the article from the future is about the Flash going missing written hours after his disappearance by his wife who apparently isn't fazed by it. I can't help but wonder if Iris is clinging to them as 'destiny' because she might think it's her due after she said 'screw destiny' and she lost Eddie. Be with someone because you are in love with them, not because of something as intangible and malleable as 'destiny'. They've already proven that the future isn't set in stone, and will continue to show it in season 5, so does the "we're destiny" even stand up the smallest amount anymore anyway?
3) This right here...Cisco has been working for 6 MONTHS on a way to bring Barry back with some of the best and brightest minds they know but Iris just dismisses it. There is Iris, Barry's dad Joe, Barry's brother Wally and Barry's best friend Cisco whom he actually left in charge of the team in that room but no-one but Iris gets a say? They're all supposed to give up hope because she says has? They'd rather try everything conceivable and fail, then give up without trying anything. That right there shows why she doesn't really fit team Flash, let alone has what it takes to lead them. And the samaroid...yeah why have the smart people use science to help him bring together his fractured psyche, when you can just have Iris play 'damsel in distress' and it's system reboot...and then have her yell at him for *him* failing *her* by choosing to save the world without her permission when if it was up to her he would have still been in the speedforce. I still don't buy that no-one caught Iris saying "the Flash will come for me" on camera because it would have painted a bulls-eye on her back for anyone who wants to hurt the Flash.
2) I mentioned it above but, seriously? Not only does she unfairly call him out "Left me standing there all alone." with the remains of their family and his friends/team-mates while he went into the speedforce where nothing and no-one is real, but she did it in front of someone he couldn't really defend himself in-front of without exposing his superhero identity. She doesn't ackowledge that he did it to save the world from being destroyed because all she seems to care about is how it affects *her* .But I think that's kind of an over-arching trait of Iris'. She's primarily very selfish. Not only that I think she wants people to know Barry is the Flash and she's his wife. What she said with the samaroid. Calling him out at the therapists office. The things she said at his trial (I still can't believe her 'is saving the world a good reason?' crack when they didn't know but she did and yet she gave him shit for it. Where was that when he got home?), Iris *WANTS* people to know Barry is the Flash because she wants people to know she's the Flash's other half and for people to know "We are the Flash" and "There is no Flash without Iris West" because she wants the fame and attention that she thinks should come with being the Flash's S.O.
1)'We tried that with Savitar, it didn't work' slightly different, since Savitar would have blinked out of existence if he didn't kill Iris, but would have happened if the Thinker had just given up? And the things Iris said and did to Harry that episode...appalling would be putting it mildly. He was no longer of use to her so his opinions no longer meant anything to her unless he chased her down and *made* her listen and even then she takes full credit. All season 4 the writers have tried to convince us that Iris is this woman of wisdom who's words can turn a person to their side...and all I see is recycled pep-talks and a large amount of judgement and self-interest from Iris episode after episode. And yet people who have next to nothing to do with her give her credence when she hasn't earned it in the slightest. Why is Marlize, the brilliant woman and scientist, listening to the former barista/ former journalist who only has what she does because of her husband? Why did Killer Frost? WHY IS ANYONE LISTENING TO IRIS FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN PLOT REASONS? Oh right, they're not because that would require Iris to actually be more than a 2-dimensianal plot device/damsel in distress on the show. It took an entire episode of Harry trying to convince Iris Marlize wasn't a monster, and then actually being a smarter investigative journalist than her for Marlize to come to their side and yet Iris still probably thinks it was all her, and probably even gives herself props for doing it while having to 'watch over' Harry. "I believe in you." No Iris, you believe that either way Marlize helping the team will reflect well on you.
Iris is an incredibly hypocritical person. So she accused Barry of abandoning her even though she knew he actually saved the world, then turns around under her breath at a trial acknowledges he actually was saving the world? I mean, I knew all along that the "We're the Flash" proclamation was straight up garbage, but it's like the writers don't realize how awfully this character comes across onscreen. It just makes zero sense. She and everyone in the city would be dead and she knew it, and she wanted to leave Barry in the Speedforce as punishment. Huh? This person is supposed to be the Flash's lightning rod and rock? If I didn't know any better, I'd think Iris actually secretly hates Barry for being The Flash. And their relationship isn't complementary. It's just whatever Iris says goes. There is no compromise. In the end, she is always right.
And I'm not lying when I say in every one of their confrontations, I was wholeheartedly rooting for Marlize over Iris! lol I don't care about Iris being the female "lead", Marlize is a much more likable character even as a villain. And some fans really think that WestAllen is a younger, healthier version of the Devoes! lol I guess they are completely overlooking the fact that Marlize is a brilliant scientist that supported her husband and never once tried to usurp his power or steal his thunder. SHE built his thinking cap. He actually wouldn't be the The Thinker without her. And when she saw him continuing to hurt innocent people, she not only tried to talk him out of it, but tried to stop him. Back in Season 3 when Barry was willing to let innocent people die just to save her, Iris just fell back in the ranks and was OK with him doing whatever it took to save her. Iris is a failed reporter that has no business being anywhere near StarLabs, much less leading Team Flash. No one invited her there. She just showed up everyday and is now in a position of power by being married to the boss.
And now the show can boast 2 fleshed out, lovable female characters in Caitlin and Marlize and it's scary that Marlize ended up being so beloved by the fans after ONE season, while Iris can't get anybody to like her after 4 seasons. The Flash writers think Iris is going to be beloved just by popping up on screen every 3 minutes, but if she's doing nothing but being bitchy, manipulative, and a pest, that anatagonizes the fandom. What is really troublesome is that many fans are now trying to lump together all the female characters as being bad saying stuff like the show is pushing a feminist agenda and it doesn't know how to write female characters. NO, the show doesn't know how to write for one specific female character in Iris. The Girls' Night Out episode is being used as a smoke screen to make it seem like all the females are bad characters when Iris is the only bad one. EVERY female character that had significant things to do in Season 4: Caitlin, Marlize, Cecile, Amunet, Becky, you can say there's at least SOMETHING positive they contributed to the story, whether it be through feeling like fleshed out characters (Caitlin, Marlize) or just being funny (Cecile, Amunet, Becky). Yeah, there were moments when there were weak spots, but I can honestly say there were moments of natural humor and drama coming from these characters. With Iris, she never feels fleshed out, always feels shoved into every story. And she's supposed to be the most important female character, yet resonates as the least important.

Maybe it was just the writing was so horrible that it affected the actress' ability to put forth a believable performance. It actually speaks to the fact that Iris is nothing more than a bad plot device character who only goes where the plot takes her. Basically, Iris never felt like a well-conceived character to me. I watched a few episodes into Season 5 to see if it would get any better, but the show just lost something after Season 2. Also, I really didn't care for the addition of Ralph Dibny, which is ironic given what's happening with him now. I just didn't think the guy was funny. And I really didn't like the addition of Nora West-Allen. The actress played the role like she was a pre-teen. It seemed like the show was being taken over from Barry by other characters who the writers were trying to force into the story as more important than him.

Ok so a thing about when Barry and iris fought about Barry taking nora back to the future, the fact that when Barry asked "and that doesn't bother you? And she had the audacity to reply with "no it doesn't" just because she is their child proves that she isn't fit for him.

And the writers and even some people wonder why fans of The Flash hate the Walter Allens romance and relationship (don't know if I spelled Barry's last name right) and why other fans, myself included, think Barry and Caitlin are the better pairing that should have happened/should be happening right now since Caitlin is more supportive of Barry, has always been there for him since they met, they both have amazing chemistry together, and the fact that they were each others own breaking points to the worse sides of each other if you go back and look back at every season minus season 4 (because the writers deleted the only scene that had Barry and Caitlin having a Snowbarry moment).
honestly at this point it isn't even about snowbarry, it's just that Iris and Barry simply are trash together because Iris is a piss-poor written character. I'm a snowbarry fan, but at this point, I'd be happy even if Barry got with someone else that wasn't Caitlin (as long as that character isn't also written poorly and not a bitch)

Never have I ever encountered a character that is as badly written :( Especially since season 2, she keeps changing her mind, feelings, ... every few minutes without any character development to support it. Even though this bugs me most if it's towards Barry (or Caitlin, Cisco or Harry), you can also really see it in her behavior towards her mother and towards Wally. Like in S3E8&9, first she is the one mad at Wally for using his powers and then she is defending him towards Joe when Joe is mad at Wally for using his powers. But there is no moment that supports this change of heart.
It's just so incredibly frustrating to watch, so thank you for your video, it helps :)
R Emm regarding #2, it was one of those things that angered me a lot. It shows how ungrateful Iris can really be. To put himself into the SF to save central Central City & possibly even more while spending there all alone, yet Iris throws him under the bus like that. She has some nerve doing that. Let's not forget about episode 4x10 when Barry was falsely on trial; Iris being the"genius" that she is, tries to goad him into revealing his secret in front of everyone, real smart there 😒😒. Iris tries to take it upon herself to reveal Barry's identity. It also shows a reason why Joe told Barry into not to tell her about it back in the 1st season. Because she wants to be attached to him at all times.
I have said this once and I’ll keep saying it: iris is selfish and doesn’t belong here. No I don’t hate the actress as I think Candice is phenomenal but her character is infuriating. She blames Barry for going into the speed force like he had a choice. She also told him to do what he felt was right about saving his mom back in S1 and then yells at him cause he created flashpoint. Time and time again I honestly wonder if this is who Barry was meant to be with. And yeah I think Caitlin/Frost would be better for Barry. “But but but ice and cold don’t mix” yeah but polar opposites attract right? Plus Caitlin wouldn’t ever treat Barry like this. Only time I guess she did was in S3 but that’s because she was scared to become Frost.

I've never truly hated a canon couple until now- until I've seen these two that is. IW is a badly written character- I hated her since the moment she wiped that ketchup stain from Barry's face and tried to get between Barry and Linda. And also how she only wants saved when it suits her. I have held of because even her voice irritates me. Lol But I want to do these before the show starts.
This video was from 3 years ago but let me say something in defence of Iris.
1.When Iris told Barry she wished him for someone who loves him for the amazing person he is, Barry hadn't confessed his feelings to Iris. Acting jealous is with Linda was understandable because she had hidden feelings before him since childhood but she never thought Barry would feel the same because they had grown together. This is also how Barry felt for Iris before confessing. He thought Iris didn't feel the same and this made the story long.
2.Iris was speechless when Barry said he loved her because Eddie was in her life and couldn't hurt him. If she had broke up with Eddie because Barry had confessed her feelings her character would show how cheap she was and you would still blame her. Her Silence meant she was confused.
3.When she confessed to Barry that she loved him it was after Barry had broken up with Patty( remember Iris told Barry to tell Patty she was the flash if he loved her) and also remember it is Barry who brought a recording from Eddie when he travelled in the past to help Iris get over Eddie. Barry wanted Iris to move on and with him.
4.She didn't steal Harry's idea, Harry helped her see how they could defeat thinker because he was loosing his intelligence and Everyone on the team knew that. We saw how Cecil helped him when he could no longer say scienfic words.
5.Being mad at Barry for leaving her even when she knew he saving the world was because Barry always tried to find solution before risking it all but he never considered options at this time it's like your husband running away from the alter before you say I do. She was hurt but I also agree their was some bad writing here.
My opinion.
I was with you until you said Iris didn't steal Harry's idea. When Harry referred to Marlize as the key to defeating DeVoe,Iris called her a monster and all of the sudden after being convinced that Marlize could help defeat DeVoe,Iris convinced her as if it was her idea. As for comparing Barry going into the speed force being like leaving her at the alter,that's a dumb comparison. It's like being with someone who joined the army. He had to because that's what he's meant to do. She didn't just plan on marrying Barry Allen. She was also marrying The Flash. Saving the world is what heroes do. Iris is a spoiled selfish brat for acting like she's more important than the world. Caitlin didn't like that Ronnie chose to save the city by going into the particle accelerator,but she didn't yell at him the next time she saw him after Firestorm separated. Caitlin was happy to see him and didn't say "YOU LEFT ME RONNIE! YOU JUST LEFT ME!"

Somebody told me that they tried to do female empowerment for Iris but they just made her a nagging, contradictory and hypocritical bitch. From the first minute she finds out he's Flash and shows some interest, she forces herself into everything. She won't leave his side, she forces herself into Team Flash even tho she's useless to them, she bitches at him for everything he does that literally keeps people alive... I understand if he completely ignored her and she got upset he wasn't listening to her but he's always there for her and always listens and that just makes it so when he looks away for half a second, she's pissed. They wanted to make her strong but they made her overly pushy

If they made her character useful as in doing her “job” as being a reporter and getting insight on villains and report back to the Flash and what not, then maybe she wouldn’t get so much hate. Too bad Danielle Panabaker isn’t Iris. If Caitlin didn’t exist then there would be no race wars, Better love story, maybe not get Iris or Barry as adoptive siblings. Still keep being a journalist or reporter but also has the brains like Caitlin. And would be supportive and can get info based on his mother’s case by going into old database of news articles or something. Plus she also looks like the comics Iris West. But since she’s Caitlin that we love cause she has a better character development and useful and chemistry with Grant, plus she’s killer frost (who deserves much better) and in the end Iris needs to go and Caitlin needs to stay and Snowbarry endgame.
