I used a penny stove on my Appalachian trail hike. super lightweight, small and reliable. Best part is they’re cheap to make, so if it gets messed up, it cost 50 cents and 5 minutes to make a replacement.
Love it! ♥️ However, my ancestors have always cooked without gas and electricity lol... Wood and rocks were their methods. Still to this day; most people in Samoa are using this method.
Actually, their is a reason why this UA-camr did what he did. Alcahol is extremely flammable, therefor it burns out quickly. If you watch carefully, you'll see that big flame dies out about 5 seconds later. This home made stove prevents all the alcohol from being burned at once by using the fumes instead. It's basically a giant lighter.
Awesome! That looks like the "Trangia" an expensive but well worth the price back packing stove, made in Sweden, I bought 20years ago, which I no longer have. It ran on denatured alcohol. Thank you for posting!
I noticed you had to pre heat the bottom. and you used 90 % ethanol. We used HEET, no preheating needed. Ethanol is more hygroscopic than other, so the water content gets more specially on an open container. Methanol is also a good fuel but need safety precautions. Later makers insert a liner at the bottom others fill the cavity with Fiberglass wool. Both makes the burning smoother.and seem to last longer.

How about putting bigger candles in a stainless steel sink and using a glass cutting board over the candles and setting cooking pots or pans on it? Glass will get hot, even a tin, aluminum etc cooking pan over the candles in a full sink would heat multiple food items. Just saying...

Copper can be harmful. Right? My friend was made disabled by soldering stained glass. When I was a kid, we were told not to throw pennies in the campfire.
Just a tip to add to this video. The center hole under the penny needs to be a bit bigger that the other 4. Also you don’t want to use any penny that’s newer that 1982. Because of the zinc.
Only question I have is how long would the flames last with the amount of alcohol you used? Or if it would explode if you exposed it to the heat long enough to start it up? Great Video!
You will be amaze at how long you will be able to cook on one of these things with just a little bit of fuel. I cooked for maybe an hour with about 3 ounces of denatured alcohol before it went out on its own. You start it with a lit match or lighter and what burns are the fumes that rise from the top of the fuel.
Test it before you need it. The one I made exploded in my face. I had a face shield on, so I was not injured. However, for a few seconds I was on fire.

When it burns out after the hour, is it reusable with more alcohol or will that case burn damage to the cans?
You can still use the can...
Where do you get 96 percent rubbing alcohol, I only see 91 percent in Walgreens and other stores.
@@matt7iron here in our country we can buy them at hardwares
@@jadea.quilo-an3957 I tried it today with cans just like the video, but it wouldn't light, so I followed another video and stuffed cotton balls in the can then soaked them by pouring the 91 alcohol through the top 5 holes and then it worked, lasted 1 hour 10 minutes, will come in handy in the woods but who Carries around alcohol and cotton balls, but with cell phones it's hard to get lost in the woods nowadays. Good to know it works though.
@@matt7iron I would think this is more for trapped in an urban areas with no fuel. Like after a hurricane, flood, blizzards
Great idea on an emegency situation as a back up.👍
By the time the video finished, my baby boy completed his graduation, got a job, married his college sweetheart , bought a house, had 3 kids, they grew to be the most beautiful grandchildren a grandmom like me would ever wish for... I would have written more, but, I died peacefully the night I celebrated my 100'th birthday 👀👀👀
Totally agree.....now i see this from space coz a thousand years has gone and i am nicely settled on Mars

Very clever little gadget you made...although I suppose it is still gas....but was interesting to watch.🙃
Next time you might want to use a permanent magic marker it works better than that pencil, lol
I was thinking the same thing.
Admire your creativity. ❤️👍👌👏👏👏👍
Id love to know how long the fire lasts and how did you male that wire stand for the coffee pot to sit on. Great project though!
I think the fire will go on for half an hour if you'd fill it completely.
Good for one cook.
Im going to make a similar thing, and send the results to you.
@@joris5429 that's great. Thank you 😊
@@MEZafiro Ive made my own now :)
I used spiritus instead (which contains 85% ethanol) I pipetted exactly 10 ml in the pack a couple of times and those 10ml burned for 4 - 6 minutes.
The pack in the video has a volume of 60 - 70 ml.
I chose to make a higher one which could hold ~100ml
@@joris5429 thank you for taking the time to respond. I appreciate your information
@@MEZafiro Im glad you do :)
Have a nice day
*FBI would like to know your location*

Not enough time spent on how to build the frame to place over the fire
Clearly we blinked & missed it. ;-)
This is actually really cool ..
Cool idea and how did the coffee tasted? Great 👍 Like Video
Wow! I'm impressed. How did you make the stand you placed over the stove?
