Excellent idea using the gascock on the expansion tank so you don't have to drain the system very smart Steve my hats off to you for really knowing the business
Great job Steve. i appreciate the time you took to demonstrate these various issues. However you might want to check your ASME code book on the position of the safety valve.
Nice, I was able to do this myself for the cost of the valve (about $50). Thanks!
Another great job Steve we enjoyed it
Harry Dickson thanks harry
Great job Steve
justin henning thanks for watching justin
Nice Work Steve.
Truckguy900 Truckguy900 thanks for watching
Very helpful to watch but this guy but it would be infinitely better if this plumber spoke though each step of the process of replacing the relief valves and the expansion tank. In the beginning of the video I thought I saw him open a lower drain on the boiler but not sure. He gift say what he was going & why. Definite improvement needed on the verbal explanation step by step.
You make it look so easy.
Michael Licitra after 32 years it is easy
im surprised to there is no installation on the pipes to keep the heat in.. yeah nice light I saw it skip across the floor.. tuff lil light it didn't bust the bulb. good job Stevie...lol
+girlpipefitter cari fox pipe insulation will melt if not fiberglass .boiler water will get to 220 or so
Nice job and video
Love all your videos thanks Steve. How the dog
i liked you installing a valve before the extank..good thinking
great vid
nate most of the time the tank goes the relief is bad also ..so the valve is probley a waste of time and money .. the boiler will have to be drained to replace the relief anyway
steven lavimoniere i still like valves,, its probably me being OCD but I like valves,, the more the merrier.lol
good vid
never put a shut off on a relief valve . thats the only safety you have .for increased pressure in boiler .if someone turns it off now you have a boom
the only way i think placing a valve prior to a relief device is to have a safety lockout installed on the valve,,, which is something not at all common in the residential arena.. They are used in commercial applications often, but I doubt many homeowners could keep up with the keys .... . Usually only see those where there is a full time maintenance staff. Dont install a valve in a home prior to a a relif, or pressure pop off or any type of safety device in plumbing application.. I think that is even code,, I would have to check,, but I do not think residential code allows that.
I like valves ( shut offs) where ever any convenience can be aided in maintenance,, but no valves should be used that could be inadvertently closed or opened that might cause a safety hazard.
Also those valves have to be labeled as such,, and it just is not done in residential applications ( usually)
hey Steve how about we figure something out like a fishing net with a rope to lower that Amtrol , or get amtrol to put some handles on the damn thing............
Hi Steve. Great video. What is your thought on using Watts service check valves for expansion tank and hy-vents? Thanks
Why do you wear Gloves? No response needed... :-)
Another Great Job Thanks Steve for the Video.
Steve, great video and thanks. when purging the zones I don't see you turning on the zone valves. is that just a given?
+Robie DIYer did not have zone valve had flow checks and circulators
Hey Steve arnt the expansion tanks suppose to be half way full of water and the other half have an air bladder in them. Do you ever check and see if maybe the air just leaked out and needs refilled? Just curious why you always change them instead of checking air psi first. Thanks
love the part at 3:00
Hey Steve, have you ever spilled water on a aquastat? I did today. It did not end well for me
my apprentice decided to try and snatch a relief valve and burnt his hand... you know how they are they know best and have been working as every other trade before working for you
hello steve, the relief valve of my gas boiler at my house was leaking and i had changed the tank, relief valve and the pressure reducing valve and the PSI read 20 when i turned on the boiler. what do i need to do bring the pressure down between 12-15?
Steven, do the expansion tanks need to be replaced when they are full and blowing the relief valves or can they just be emptied and put back on?
As PortableSkateSharpening when they are full, it means the rubber diaphragm inside has gone bad. So u would need to replace the entire tank.
Steve how do you like the Bahco adjustable wrench?
Emin HVAC i like the #8 wrench for the extanks because there skinny ,,,and fit in the tight spot for extank removal .perfect for this job
Whats that bleeder called that you replaced above expansion tank ?? Thank you
Hi Steve: My office only has water to bathroom and toilet. There is no shutoff valve to building. . The toilet has shutoff valve that is frozen and rusted open. Can I place a compression shutoff valve or should I sweat it in. to the main line coming in ??? Its all copper pipe. Thank you.
What is the the blue stuff he is using on the pipes?
no joke. I wish u taught at my tech school. what do u think of tech school? waste or not
+Chris Kovach any schooling is good you will fall back on some off them teachings
What about brush and vac that should be done yearly
Gas shut off for the expansion tank ?
What causes the valve to leak even when not on?
I have an overflow valve that is leaking pretty bad on my boiler. I had HVAC maintenace before winter and the tech suggested that I close one valve, connect a hose and let the water drain out the "overflow" tank or something to that nature. He said that for him to do it would cost an additional $150.00 and that it was simple. Does this sound like good advice?
+jeffrey Edwards if you have a older ex tank they have to be drained every couple of years and let air back in so that when you heat water it has some place to expand . thats what expanshion tank do . allow a place for water to expend as heated ,if not the relieve valve will blow water out now you have to change the relieve valve also .
Hey ma you want to turn it up haha
I change the tank new release valve and still leaking what else can be
My relief valve is older than the hills. When I do open it, the thing tends to drip. If I tap it a few times with a mallet, it stops dripping, but I am guessing a replacement is a good idea.
bg147 you should never open a old relief valve ..
Oh, thanks and I will replace it.
I just tap it, but I will order a new one and replace it. Good information to have.
Steven can the oil pressure nozzle on the burner be cleaned reused?
+Raymond Flores bepends . always a good idea to change them . if there running clean and not cooked ,you can its a judgment call
money saver thanks Steven stay blessed
@@raymondflores4183 A nozzle costs less than $5.00 and you would change it once every year when you do your annual service. It's absolutely ridiculous to attempt to clean one for the time it takes and the potential aggravation factor it can create if the burner starts running dirty. I could understand it if they were $50. But at less than $5.00 its silly not to. And you're not saving any time at all by cleaning it vs changing it since you need to remove it to clean it anyhow.
How come Steve never charges the tanks?
Why replace the high vent?
Great video, I have a question for you, my boiler start to leak via the pressure relief valve if I turn on the input valve from my city water, I got like 3 gallons overnight if I keep the input valve on. but the relief valve stop leaking right after I shut of the input water valve. So the question is, if the boiler heating system is a closed system, then should we shut the input water off, so there is no exteral water come into the system, can you do that, what is the drawback of doing this? thanks you.
+J He your expanion tank is bad. full of water no air in side. replace the expanion tank and relief valve and you should be ok after you purge the system .
+steven lavimoniere thank you, been waiting for your reply, I have got the parts, do i need to drain the water out of both zones before I can replace the expansion tank and the PRV?
no drain down the boiler the water in zones should stay there shut the boiler off before preforming work
When do you know if you need a new expansion tank?
when the relief valve starts leaking ..boiler is most likely building pressure because of faulty extank
Is it possible to drill a hole on the expansion tank to drain the water, it is easier to remove the water safely with a hose.
+Luis Diaz i guess so . never tryed it that way
Hearthman1159 god idea with the shradder core removal might make things easyer to remove .of i can catch the water in a bucket
Luis Diaz n.
Man Steven, that expansion tank looked only a few years old. What's the lifespan of those tanks, 5-6 years? Or is it they don't make stuff like they used to. They are made in Rhode Island not in China so they "should" last.
Brad1237202 tank life is 5 to 6 years from my experiences .
Whats the purpose of expansion tank....and if its bad what issues could it cause?.....
My expansion tank is real hot on bottom half and luke warm on top half.....is this ok?...also mine has a tire style valve on top....if i check this with tire gauge shouldnt it read about 14psi....whis says on side of tank....if its not 14psi....if its 5 psi then what?
I’ve seen them last 20+ years.
what is the blue sealant used on threads called? i like to buy some, thank you.
Pipe dope
joser ramirez megaloc
@@gyver471 thanks very much, I just googled now and found it online!
looks like the tank been peeing to? what makes the water want to go into the tank? nice vid. :)
***** there is a rubber diafram in tank that fails .
steven lavimoniere
o then she'll start to fill up.
You need a little more pipe dope on the fittings.
Ex tanks don't seem to last huh?
Sean Rebelo 5 to 6 years thats it
the boiler has a scratch on the side. You need to replace entire unit lol
DAHARDEND6IX a boiler like this one will go a good 25 years . no problem
nice glasses steve 3:01 bitch soft spoken like a true italien
rag does nothing to stop water from going onto electrical!
steve could the expansion tank be the problem?should the air pressure in the tank be checked periodicaly? should the pressure be 20lbs? dick bailey
+dick bailey sounds line a bad extank the new style ones have a rubber diapham in them . air on one side . the old style long tanks you have to drain out and let air in so when you heat the water it has some place to expeand .no air no expantion.then builds pressure and blows relief valve
