When you allow your insecurities to override your privilege and platform that builds community how do we expect to build up the black community when most of our battles faced is within our own race. This clearly shows that when black people get a little taste of privilege , success or status we pull our own race down who are not on that level. Furthermore, when this is exposed to others who are outside of the black race they know what to do to make it even harder to progress as a people. Words have power, words have lasting impact and actions of this causes a serious ripple effect.

While I know that Gil was not the only one to make comments on a public platform about South Sudan, others came forth and made apologies that were far more sincere. The difference in Gil’s apology was that it was nothing short of being a self dignified apology, he did the bare minimum to save face. It lacked any introspection, he will continue to hide behind his platform and will never recognize the damage his words have caused.

I don't think you guys get Gilbert. He was making fun really of the USA team. I'm saying this as I'm not African and that's how it came out to me. But I can understand why African-heritaged folks saw his comments in a different light. If you take away the pop culture references in his statements, it's really about mocking the American players.
