“I’ve been foiled by the refractive index” ah yes, what a relatable phenomenon
People with glasses will have this twice a day, once in the morning when they see their wife and once when they get back from work and see their wife.
Foil-ed by the screen protector
every time. and it woulda worked too, if it werent for those meddling wave form collapsing observations
Working with transparent materials in 3D visualization: yes very much

They call me the king of the spreadsheets, got 'em all printed out on my bedsheets
This was a flawless presentation. The timing, the beats, hitting the marks, and even when things go wrong the perfect filler. Not a second was wasted. Amazing.
almost everything was excessively drawn out bro.
@@gwho sad what the internet did to attention spans
@@gwhohe’s not actually a stand up comedian, you do know that? He’s a lecturer & maths tutor. So no, it wasn’t drawn out, as it wasn’t officially a stand up routine…
@@ShelsightI have to stand up a comment here: He's a standup guy, and he was standing up! Q.E.D.
Just proves what Monty Python once pointed out: Life's a piece of sheet when you look at it.
Always look on the bright (any number b/w 0 and 255) side of life.
I use python so I don't have to use spreadsheets so we've come full circle
I still appreciate the subtle clever humor of the phrase "i will perform somewhere between 0 and a whole joke"
With a probability of 1
I confused it with sine's range , and was thinking how can he do a sin in the middle of a comedy show , glad to know I was wrong
As soon as he said "red green blue", I knew where that shit was headed
you mean that sheet :)

To be honest I was only going through the comments to see if I could make this joke or it was taken....
I mean, Pokemon Go is the whole reason I started learning them and once you start most games look like they'd be better with a spreadsheet. (OSRS being the one I did the second most spreadsheets for)

this was the best series of spreadsheets with syncronized air vibrations Ive ever experienced.
Those air vibrations were produced by scrolling down a very narrow spreadsheet. ;)
Facts
So, since my screen is also a dynamic spreadsheet, and so is a youtube video... I have just watched a spreadsheet of a spreadsheet representing a projection of a spreadsheet picture with Matt and a spreadsheet.
Spreadshception
+Elliot Grey
People keep using that (inception) word, I don't think it means what people think it means.
...
Recursion bitches, do you do it?
***** It's a reference to the Inception movie, where people go to a dream within a dream within a dream.
3snoW
Yes, I know.
But inception doesn't refer to the dream within a dream, but to the inception of an idea.
***** I believe people do realize that the movie isn't called "Dreamception", but by saying "Xception" is like saying "the dream thing from Inception except that instead of a dream it's X"

Man what a beautiful fusion of education and comedy. This could be a whole genre of stand-up lmao
I wish
I agree. More students would be inspired and invested in learning when you have educators like Matt who mixes the fun and humor in it
"when I take the picture say spreadsheets"
that one guy: "AAAHHHHHHHHH"
Man when I was a kid, you could see pixels on a tv screen with the naked eye!
When was that?
Well I was born in 1988, so that would have been the mid 90s.

Miss the OHP. No expectation of high production values. A pack of five coloured pens, a pile of foils and packs of the kind that you can ink print/laser print and photo copy onto. You can put your presentation together anywhere, even sat out side in the summer sun in Brisbane.
No temptation to try to pack too much info on one foil. Forced you into some good habits. Stick a blank foil over the top, scribble, annotate and highlight on the hoof without destroying the original.
Cannot say I miss the punched paper tape or the teletype. Think it is quite recent that NHS stopped using Fax, Boeing are phasing out 3.5" floppys (rather the old 747's that have them) and DoD have retired 8" floppys from missile defence after about 50 years. B-52s are all older than 57yrs and are not due to retire before they hit 90yrs old
Still do some places
There's not much wrong with OHPs. They are a lot cheaper than many more modern alternatives and are pretty reliable.
I have never seen a school or university classroom, where every computer and it's ports worked perfectly. OHPs o the other hand are much more reliable
Dad: what's the most important thing you've ever done with your life, son?
Son: I got about a hundred people to pay to hear me say a pun about Microsoft Excel at a comedy club.
Dad: I'm so proud of you.
I laughed way way too much at the "Exceled" joke. That was absolutely brilliant.

Spreadsheets all the way down.
Matt is doing it right.
+evilcam Where exactly is the "It's turtles all the way down" originally from?
+MrRolnicek Why not google the answer and you'll have it in seconds.
+howdj in a beautiful spreadsheet format displayed on your screen

Favorite joke of the set XD
As video titles go, this is a good one.
It may be my favourite yet.
+John Reynolds This is obviously a spreadsheet, not a video.
Robert Headley Same thing.
+MrHappyBollox If String Theory is correct, the Universe is made up of discrete points, so you might be onto something there.
It's clickbait
"I have really Excel-ed myself." Way too funny. Awesome.
Good job he didn't laugh too hard he could have sheeted himself
These jokes were kind of a tough cell.
I’ll show myself out...
May be tough getting out, there are no doors and the window panes may be frozen?
As a prisoner I would tell jokes to pass the time. When no one laughed I'd say, "Tough cell!"
0/10, I was promised anywhere between 0 and 1 jokes, and was delivered 2.
The two hardest problems in computer science are cache invalidation, naming things, and off by one errors.
I get you 10 was 1 more joke from what was promised.
1.9 repeating?
10/01
I mean, technically even 1 joke was over-delivering on the promise of "between 0 and 1 jokes"
I used to own stocks in a spreadsheet company. When there was a dip on those stocks, I had to cell, cell, cell!
I think you found the Formula to success!
So you bought high and sold cheap. Rookie mistake.

The title of this video is anti-clickbait. Thanks for that.
This guy has amazing comedic timing to make a ten minute spreadsheet lecture engaging and hilarious.
thumbs up if you're watching this on a spreadsheet
Yes I'm on excel++
Me. The comment section is limited though
No-one else watching on an overhead projector?!
bb ASCII graphics and monocrome screen would be interesting experiment for this vid
Awesome routine. Making a spreadsheet of a photo is such a clever idea. One of those ideas which is so obvious in hindsight (for anyone who understand RGB values and spreadsheet conditional formatting.)
But I never would have thought of putting those two together, or imagined it would end up looking so good.
Matt really has a gift for providing entertaining demonstrations of technical and mathematical concepts.
@TheBloke I truly was a little nervous that it would crash during his routine.
I knew where this was going when he said 0 to 255.
Timothy Y. i still dont know where he went with it
Timothy Y. talk computing to me
For some reason I was thinking of IP Addresses lol
@@jaqian Ditto...
Ironically, the only thing I was thinking was that he was OCD or something and he liked a LOT of large numbers in an excel document. When the colors came into play, I thought, "How is he going to see some of those values if they're so dark?" The best part is I'm a photographer. I guess that showed where my head was.

His excel file was called "spreadsheets all the way down" 😂
If you look at his expressions he’s either playing and teasing with the audience or just laughing from how much fun he’s having on stage, and you can really tell how much he loves performing❤
What joy I have stumbled into!
Matt, I am glad you're doing these shows. I loved your goofy personality back in Numberpile.
why is this funnier than everything else I found today on UA-cam?
In the end, I laughed heartily. But now I also really, really want my own portable, computer-compatible microscope.
I never thought i'd ever see comedy about Spreadsheets.
I enjoyed this even more than I thought I would. And as a super-nerd I knew I would enjoy it.

This is the first video of yours I stumbled on and I enjoyed every spreadsheet of it!
:D I love this! I know that you're busy often, Matt, but can you please upload more standup comedy? You are brilliant!
The problem with 'real' stand-up comedy is that it is really hard/expensive to film. But I'll put up other bits from this Spoken Nerd DVD in a few months.

I just went to your think maths site do do a picture, then browsed the other downloads. I think you will be happy to know that I experienced a physical shiver of excitement while reading the names of some of the spreadsheets.

This is basically art, math and science combined into one fun video - if only I can translate this into a format that teenagers in high school can appreciate (or heck students at the tail end of elementary/primary school)
I knew you are funny, but having a stand-up comedy like this... never expected! Amazing! I had a lot of fun watching it!
p.s. why should I ruin hours and hours of fun using your picture ulploader, when I can do every picture I want by myself (yeah, years and years of fun!)
I do work as a stand-up comedian as a living. :] And yes, don't let the automatic converter rob you of hours of tedious fun.
If he were a professor at Nottingham, could he perhaps title himself the Spreadsheriff of Nottingham...?
I read your book, and it was quite amazing. Now I have time to entertain myself with spreadsheets!
Your videos are so good! My husband questioned why I was watching a calculator review, and now "it's maths all the way down"
I just realized how you can make the people laugh just by talking the same way as the other stand-up comedians. You don't even need to have good jokes! All you need is a subject that can be a bit interesting and then talking like any stand-up comedian and then, you have a stand-up comedy show!
Me when I first watched this:
lol, who would use a spreadsheet recreationally?
Me now, playing D&D in quarantine with a google sheets character sheet:
....oh....
Nice job, that was so amazing!!!
Full Frontal Nerdity.......is a BRILLIANT name.
Also your last joke.....Its spreadsheets all the way down....Brilliant.
"Stand up mathematician" so he doesn't need to sit down to do math?
That one is so bad....exactly my taste. Thanks
It makes me uncomfortable to do math sitting down
Apparently not. There is a Great Big Story video about mathematicians' love for a certain brand of chalk. So it seems many prefer to stand up before a literal chalkboard.
So this is how I spent my time at 1:30am

Matt be like : "I heard you like spreadsheets so I made a spreadsheet in your spreadsheet which shows a spreadsheet in a picture made of a spreadsheet."
Spreadsheets are fantastic for organizing your life, particularly with hobbies and past times. I use them frequently when running tabletop roleplaying games with my friends. They're really quite handy.
Truee, I used to have one for TV shows I was watching
Matthew Randell you're watching too much TV if you need a spreadsheet
