  • When it comes to communications systems for your UTV, you really only ever hear of two names in the industry: Rugged Radios and PCI Race Radios. While those two communications companies have solidified their footholds in the industry, there have been several new companies entering the UTV car-to-car and in-car communications market. Today we’re looking at car-to-car, in-car, and handheld radio options that you might be considering from NavAtlas.

Fantastic and very thorough review. I've personally used Navatlas intercoms in my machine and installed a few for customers and we have had nothing but problems. You nailed just about every single issue I've experienced myself. I really want to love Navatlas, but they completely missed the mark. The first red flag was when I had to open the intercom to rewire so I could use the front headset jacks. Then the list goes on just like yours. Issues with transmission on certain frequencies, Low volume to headsets when receiving incoming 2 way, lack of bluetooth, lack of programming software, rudimentary wiring and packaging, etc!!! I hate to say, but I moved on to Rugged Radio for myself and all my customers. Rugged isn't perfect either (I prefer the Navatlas headsets), but its a much better system.

I had the same set up and the same issues.i actually had to press in the mic connection in really hard until it clicked for the second time and worked after good. Vox was hard to set up in a spot that actually worked. Lack of directions and not to mention all the accessories needed to be purchased for Bluetooth to work. Needles to say made one ride with this set up.
Now I have a rugged set up. And couldn’t be happier.

on our rugged thee backseat passengers can't talk car to car but can talk freely with front sat passengers without having the PTT buttons. the PTT button is only for reaching out to other cars and not in car coms. is this the same on Navatlas? the way you mentioned hearing kids in the backseat made it seem like they can only listen and not talk in car vi coms?

That is the intended functionality, yes… provided the VOX works correctly. I recognize this wording mistake after the fact.

Unable to PC Program, the radio is FCC Lic to Amateur Radio Only - NavAtlas wants you to use radio outside of FCC Regulations - Beware

I can’t speak for the quality of the Nav Atlas, but many things you spoke about were incorrect. The push to talk buttons are for transmitting out to other vehicles, not for talking to your passengers. So your rear passengers don’t need a push to talk to speak with others in the same vehicle. Regarding the Vox, it seemed to be working fine. The reason you have to turn it up so far is you were in a quiet place.Get some wind & engine noise and your going to turn it down to close the circuit. The better systems have DSP chips to better help cancel those other noises.
Without seeing what front jacks on the intercom your talking about. Your helmet or headset cables should plug into the back of the intercom. Most intercoms with front jacks are for phones or music.
I’d suggest bringing in a radio guy and have them on your UA-cam or podcast and explain how to wire and work a radio & intercom. Rugged has some pretty good videos to help. Lastly regarding a hard reset. Of course it’s going to wipe your programs clear. The vendor, Nav Atlas,, Rugged or PCI are pre-programming radios for you. Any radio you do a hard reset on your going to wipe memory clear. That’s what a hard reset does. Just like wiping your phone or computer hard drive clean.
While I agree with some of your observations about the poor mic connection, ports on the intercom not working, glass fuses, buttons on the top of the radio not easy to see. I think you should allow Nav Atlas the opportunity to explain the correct way to instal and operate their system. They can also explain what the poor mic connection, the ports not working etc…

Thanks for the feedback. I try hard to keep things natural and speak from memory. I caught the passenger PTT mistake after the fact when somebody DM'd me. Will try to nail it perfect next time.
As for the VOX, only high-end/pricey systems like those used in aircraft, use DSP VOX. The quiet environment was simply mentioned to demonstrate that in the best-case scenario it wasn't working well in any setting. The fact is that it didn't work with any noise/noiseless environment well. Even if this was an advanced DSP circuit, it would have opened/closed correctly with the appropriate setting for the environment; loud or quiet.
As for the jacks, if you go back in the video or in the written review, the photo shows the front jacks not working because they were not plugged into anything on the PCB. There are NO jacks on the PCB for the front jacks. You would have to disconnect the rear jacks and then extend the front cables to reach the back of the PCB to plug-in.
While we are not "experts" in radios, we are well versed in the installation requirements and functionality of radios and comms. The Rugged Radios team has done a great job putting out content to educate customers and is constantly at races to help support racers and fix their comms. They are a great group of guys.
My comments about a factory reset clearing programming... they stand with all manufacturers, even Rugged. If you buy something with official licensing that is what differentiates that product from the original OEM product, that should be "hard-baked". This goes for any product. If you buy a Lexus and do a factory reset on the radio, you don't expect to see a Toyota logo/graphics pop up. At the very least, there should be communication about this to the consumer through a warning card in the packaging or manual. Again, I'm trying to take the place of the average consumer and think as they would.
Like I said at the end of the video, I hope NavAtlas comes back with a better build/components and does provide competition in the marketplace!

A Blade style fuse is a Terrible replacement. They are notorious for corrosion and they cause power loss.A glass fuse is far superior. You are far better off with a glass fuse holder that has the screw on end cap.I have had many issues with blade fuses causing low power from Amateur Radios so I replaced them with a Quality glass fuse holder as described.

Funny, I’ve always had glass fuses fall apart and corrode, and have never had an issue with a blade fuse… 🤷‍♂️

@@SXSGuys the holder for the Glass Fuse is Key. That’s why I use the Screw in Fuse Holder. It’s built strong and far better than the snap together holders which are also Junk.

This kit just wasn’t thought all the way through. They’ve said they are looking to rebuild the setup and get new products but I can’t personally recommend them when there’s proven products on the market. Maybe their v2 will be awesome 🤷‍♂️
