- We made it to Northern Romania! 🇷🇴 We even saw Ukraine from our train, which felt pretty surreal honestly... 🤯
Sighetu Marmatiei (Sighet) is exactly the type of place we love discovering whenever we are in a new country. Not a lot of other tourist know about it, so we end up basically being the only ones and it really gives us a true sense of what life is like... in a raw way, unspoiled by mass tourism. Don't get us wrong, we love most touristy places too, but having the time and flexibility to spend some time in places like this, definitely feels special 💕
We learned more about communism in Romania, tried delicious Romanian foods we hadn't tried yet and also learned about Jewish history in this part of Romania. It was a really awesome that and we hope you enjoy this Romania vlog :)

Actually you ate romanian dishes with hungarian names. The Hungarians tried to made everything to be in hungarian language. Everything romanian must be in hungarian on hungarian time. For business and money the restaurants keeped it in hungarian.

Many visitors consider the Balkans the Hidden Gem of Europe. Even I as a Balkanian was amazed by many places in Bulgaria, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Croatia, Greece, etc. Romania occupies a special place, perhaps the most eclectic country, the most religious, with many traditions and customs that come from ancient times, some even from pre-Christian times! Romania will always welcome you smiling, always shockingly beautiful and surprising.

@@waysoftheworld_ Try to visit the painted monasteries of Bucovina, go down on the map to Iași, then to Piatra Neamț (with a small detour through the Bicazului Gorges) but then continue your way to the Danube Delta, to then go down to the shore of the Black Sea. From there in 2 hours, 2 hours and a half you are in Bucharest. In order to think more coherently about a travel plan, I inform you that you have a small international airport in Suceava (which is the unofficial capital of Bucovina) with connections from London, Dublin, Paris, Milan, Brussels, Rome, Vienna, and many other cities small from Europe.
Romania is not part of the balkans. Only Dobruja is part of balkans.

We've never had sour cream like Romania's sour cream... it basically ruined other sour creams for us hahaha it always tastes so fresh and delicious 😍

from a Romanian to Aimara...I left that place in tears and I didn't have any family members in there during that era...it's a bad memory but it needs to be shared with the world! Hopefully in the next video you will understand more about Romanian roots and humorous way of looking at life when you visit the "happy cemetery"

We just spent the last 3 days in Sighet and toured the prison museum today. It is amazing to see how horrible Communism was.

I don't know if you noticed the poems written in prison in bandages... For me is a never to forget memory...as I'll never fortget a poem I saw there, on the wall. I try to translate for you (even though it's not a poetic translation):

I've enjoyed this series a lot. My dad's heritage is from Romania. I'll bet you two fit in well from what I know about the culture! They are very welcoming and warm. I remember chicken stew, mumaliga/polenta and stuffed cabbage growing up.

I like to eat food, no mather of it's origins as dish, is a kind of respect to all nationalities, taste has no borders and Unite people. The fact we have dishes which present Hungarian traditional food, is a fact that we step to don't be anymore that Conservative. Is great for tourists that they can have more food experiences as they visit us.

Yes, learning about a country's history is always important to understand it better. Romania has a very sad history (just like most countries), but very interesting and worth learning about. You should visit Romania! It's such a beautiful country with the nicest people and with so much to offer! We love it! 🇷🇴❤️

i live in sighet part-time. come on the right day of the week, and you'll see hundreds of jews around the new synagogue that was just completed 2021. they say it's the first new synagogue built in europe since 1940

that was more of a mushroom ciulama...paprikas is red from paprika and tomato paste and the sauce is not that thick...they mixed sour cream and flour to make this one...both good but not the same thing,,real chicken or mushroom paprikas is way better

Restaurants are cheating when it comes to papanași. What you get in restaurants is NOT the traditional papanași, it's the fast food version (basically fried doughnuts). Traditional papanași are made from semolina and boiled, not fried. Restaurants prefer the easier version to make, and customers prefer the higher calorie content per Leu. But traditional papanași are much tastier (in a lighter, more subtle manner) and healthier.

8:44 In the romanian language we call this "TOCHITURA", but your is not a real tochitura, is mixed with hungarian gulash. The real tochitura is made withouth tomato and paprika sauce. In Sighet they have 80% hungarian influence. The real tochitura you will find only in the northern side of country in Bucovina and Moldova.

In history, we were a shield for Europe in front of the Turks, Tatars, Russians and when we thought we had friends...religion, faith, culture...the Romanians were always alone.
No one understands why a Latin people is surrounded by Slavs, the great Romanian mystery and miracle.
I have been following, since I returned home from the USA 4 years ago, what vision foreigners have about us.
I couldn't, I didn't want to abandon my nation and my homeland .. with all its evils .. because I would only blame the Romanians who tortured, killed and humiliated the Romanians.
Imposed by Russia this mess of communism (and maybe the naivety that there is another world more equal for people) you too saw Sighet full of Romanian brains that could have made this country another destiny.
I am delighted and grateful that you were at sighet, even as a passer-by you brought to the world a little of the pain and suffering of people who lived under communism and what it means even today.
HERE ..how Ukraine spills its blood to get rid of the Russians, this people infected with savages and murderous animals ..and which brought the Romanians only death, thievery, mental dementia, and ended their natural path of evolution.
I don't know if it's good to mourn or to do what we're doing today... to keep our pain and drama deep in our hearts and carried forward with dignity.
There is something in our gene that cries and suffers in silence given at birth as a curse.
We don't forget the tragic history we went through, this permanent threat that one and the other will come and because of this it is sacred for us to know the roots and traditions.
HUNDREDS of years in a row came and for hundreds of years we were divided.. into blue (Transylvania) yellow (Wallachia) red (Moldova) by Hungarians, Germans, Turks, Russians, Austrians..even Poles bit from Romania.
And today we have lands and Romanians through Ukraine, Serbia, Hungary and Bulgaria...but we are here and this overwhelmed you too when you walked and breathed in my Romania.
The biggest sin experienced by us today is regret .. that we fought between ourselves and Sighet is proof and that we did not go over others .. that's how Romanians .. to defend their needs and our nation.
Sighet, like many other places in Romania, is the absolute shame of human dehumanization...not of Romania.
And all the easier to understand, for you, that you are a few km from Ukraine, where the primitive commune returned...with this garbage of the people called Russia.
For the rest .. Romanian STEW is 10 classes above Hungarian goulash, a poor man's food .. neither soup nor course 2 :)))

Finally.. you touched me badly in the soul with the prison in Sighet, there are many Romanians who refuse to go there.. for shame :((

This is not really true that the romanians was guilty for the atrocities happened in the Stalin period. Let don't forget that actually all the Russian communists commissioners was no one romanians but jews. Except few strange events in the ww2 the Antonescu regime did a lot of efforts to escape the Jews from Poland or Hungary crossing Romania but after they didn't accept that the romanians are not happy to accept what Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt decided in terms of preparing the east Europa for the globalization. Actually Marx said that the romanians are the most reactionary people in the world and should dissappear. And yes the romanians are still a stone in the road to globalization. We still have an ancestral memory of the Dacians freedom. And you she know that Sighetul Marmației was part of the hungary in the ww2 and the Jews who escaped from the area crossed romanian territory helped by the Antonescu regime. Thanks for this Elie Wiesel force the romanians to convict Antonescu as a war criminal. The history isn't everytime fair.

gulas do not have tripe inside. that is a "galusca" :), made from "gris" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semolina :D but... you should try at least once, the tripe "ciorba" ... it`s fabulos!
I know... this is killing us! A few people have mentioned this and it is now hunting us hahaha those dumplings sound INCREDIBLE! The funny part is that we've never tried tripe before and don't even know how it looks like 😂 but we will do it when we go back to Romania! Goulash is not romanian food. Plus your gulash it was not gulash, because the gulash is a kind of stew, not a broth/soup.
I'm pretty sure we said it was Hungarian... but yeah not sure what it was then. That's just what it said on the menu 🤷🏻♀️ we're definitely not experts with these foods... 🙈
Gulyas is always soup. And it's traditional in Crisana, Maramures and Transilvania. So stop your nationalistic disinformation.
