      As an ex CAL 777 Capt at the time…. It was EWR departure control ATC who dictated it was okay to dump fuel as the flight had already declared an emergency and had to return to EWR for a hydraulic failure just after takeoff on the way to China while only climbing to 2000 feet and remaining there at ATCs request to sequence them back for a landing. Since that incident, both CAL and ATC became more aware of the negative implications of dumping fuel over a populated area, at least around the local area, and came up with flight revision guidance to pilots enforcing that if a less populated area or higher altitude was available as a fuel dumping option, then environmental concerns should be taken into account. That’s why this video is old. We learned. P

      Definitely not a short runway.

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi 5 днів тому +1

      That stunt is blatantly against what the manufacturer says is the correct landing procedure. The 747 manual specifically states:
      *_"Do not attempt to hold the nose wheels off the runway. Holding the nose up after touchdown for aerodynamic braking is not an effective braking technique and may result in high nose gear sink rates upon brake application"._*
      Most likely, the pilot is just inflating his ego by showing off to easily-impressed spotters.

    • @rtbrtb_dutchy4183
      @rtbrtb_dutchy4183 4 дні тому +1

      @ has nothing to do with ego. Pilots don’t try and impress spotters. Come on man.
      Boeing advises against it, but does not forbid this. I used to do it at a particular airport with an 11,000 foot runway and you have to exit at the end. So a good way of doing it is a bit of aerodynamic braking, without using brakes or reverse thrust.

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi 4 дні тому

      @ As the manual says, it _" is not an effective braking technique and may result in high nose gear sink rates upon brake application"._ Good enough reasons not to do it.

    • @rtbrtb_dutchy4183
      @rtbrtb_dutchy4183 4 дні тому

      @@coriscotupi unless you don’t need an effective way of braking. Again, when you touch down normally and use normal braking on an 11,000 foot runway, you will be at taxi speed halfway down the runway. Now you might have to add power, to speed up and get to the end in a fashionable time.
      Or, you decide to not use brakes. Not use reverse thrust and keep the nose up to get to the end of the runway a bit quicker and safe.

    question about 2:20 because I find aviation really interesting but I'm not super knowledgeable on it.
    when a plane dumps fuel, does it evaporate instantly, before it reaches "human" level, or does it rain fuel a little?

    • @mytmousemalibu
      @mytmousemalibu 6 днів тому +6

      Depends on altitude and temperature. It will evaporate fairly quickly as it is atomized when it hits the airstream but that low is probably going to see some on the ground. You would certainly smell it. I delt with a fuel spill at Dubai International Airport a few years ago, it was late Sept but still crazy hot. Fuel sump drains were left open as we discovered fueling the jet. Probably spilled a few gallons of Jet-A before I got the drains closed. Probably soaked a 20x20' area of concrete. By the time Airport spill response/authorities arrived, maybe 5-10min later, all the fuel had already evaporated, not a trace left.

    • @hadrast
      @hadrast 6 днів тому +2

      It's not instant, but the altitudes required for evaporation are well undestood; the majority of dumps are over water, and the only time it "rains" is when there's something severely wrong with the aircraft, or someone royally fked up.

    • @hellcattanker7406
      @hellcattanker7406 5 днів тому +1

      i cant talk for large aircraft as i am in no way experienced with them, but light sport aircraft run on very high grade petrol. the Cesna 152 i fly for example the dipstick i use will evaporate all the fuel on it a few seconds after taking it out of the tank. i would imagine jet fuel would be more resistant based on other comments, but in the air up there, it should mitigate before it hits the ground in most cases. then again he was low.

We were in a smaller, fully loaded regional aircraft, getting tossed around like the SS Minnow. We all white knuckled it on the ride down, and I honestly didn't think we would make it unscathed. As we filed out a man up ahead of me mumbled something or other to the pilot, and the part of his answer I caught was "...typical Thursday in Florida". Hell of a way to make a living.

      The couple at the end of the Skiathos clip got severely sand-blasted, and someone ahead of them lost an item - maybe a can of drink or a mobile phone cover. You can see something (?) skittering past on the right of the screen.
      Experienced spotters know what to expect at this famous (infamous?) viewing point, but what seems like a fun idea can turn nasty if you're a casual tourist and unprepared.
      I think the 'going wrong' in the video description refers to some 'noob' spotters' failure to anticipate the sheer violence of the forces unleashed when a big jet takes off.

      There is an adrenaline buzz being near something that big, that animated and that loud.
      I’ve never done it but I have stood under the flight path, maybe 100 metres from the start of the runway, as 747s and A380s land. It’s exhilarating. You also feel what a rabbit must experience when a bird-of-prey swoops from the skies. It’s a primeval reflex. Would recommend.

    A joke. For those who don't know, as long as the airplane is high enough, the fuel will evaporate before hitting the ground.

    I was on DELTA coming from New York to Savannah. We encounter a bad thunder storm coming into Savannah. The plane had to do circle around the storm You could see the walls of the plane flexing. I knew when the Gulfstream people sitting with me got worried I should also. We did not have enough fuel to go to another air port or back to Atlanta. We finally got landed and the Captain came out to tell us it was touch and Go for 30 minutes. He was drench in sweat. That day I and the plane was lucky.

    The nose was kept up as it reduces strain on air breaks and slows the plane down just as good

    • @brkr78
      @brkr78 6 днів тому +2

      Aerobraking like that is not a good idea for a lot of reasons. You can't see well ahead of you, you have to rely on differential breaking to keep in the middle of the runway - if that is even a thing in a 747, I don't know, chances are you cause undue stress on the nose gear if done incorrectly, and in general that is a thing many pilots pick up in their respective flight schools, but need to unlearn in their line training. However, IIRC this one instance shown here was because the plane had lost break pressure or something along those lines, so it was the best the pilots could do to slow the plane down as much as possible.

    • @rtbrtb_dutchy4183
      @rtbrtb_dutchy4183 5 днів тому +1

      @@brkr78not much of what you said is correct here.
      You can see very clearly. You don’t need differential braking. Actually, if you were to touch the brakes, the nose would be forced down.
      The airplane didn’t lose brake pressure. The pilot chose to do this likely because he has to roll all the way to the end.
      Also, you don’t really have to “unlearn” this.

      @brkr78 5 днів тому

      @ I mean, I was reiterating what both my FI and, as @Boss_Tanaka wrote, Kelsey from 74gear told me. Privately I only fly GA, DA40s to be precise. And even there aerobraking isn't a thing, at least not the way everyone learned it in my flight school, for exactly the reasons I provided.

    • @rtbrtb_dutchy4183
      @rtbrtb_dutchy4183 5 днів тому +2

      @@Boss_Tanaka he is not the only 747 Captain. I like him, but he is not correct all the time.
      Boeing advises against aerobraking and 99 out of a 100 times, it doesn’t do anything. But it’s not “stupid” either.
      There is one particular airport where I use aerobraking. The runway is 11000 feet long and to exit the runway, is all the way at the end. So it’s very smooth to not use brakes, pop the reverse only in idle and keep the nose off. It’s an efficient way to get to the end of the runway safely and smoothly.
