Hi guys! One quick thing. So springtime allergies have literally hit me like a truck (as they do every year. I have notoriously awful seasonal allergies) and I was super sick and lightheaded when I wrote the notes + recorded this. I didn't realize until I was editing just how rambling and unfocused I was 😭 I didn't have the energy to re-record as I was already running late, so sorry, and thank youuu for bearing with me lol. Hopefully I feel better for the next one!
The ven diagram of magical girl fans and doll fans overlaps, I'm sure you will be fine. I mean, have you seen people going ape shit over Winx club dolls?
One of my favorite things about PGSM is that the actresses who played the Sailor Senshi are still friends and meet up, they often share pictures on their Instagram accounts and it always warms my heart to see them hanging out after all this time ❤
I just love hearing you talk about your passions! I’m not personally a doll collector (love the aesthetic though), but your conversational tone, informative topics, perspective and dry humor are fun for me. I’m down for whatever you feel like talking about in your videos. I grew up obsessed with Sailor Moon and still love magical girl media to this day!
Everyone was always telling me the live action Cutie Honey was an unwatchable mess and I've never seen it because of that...and now I realize, I've just been talking to too many people who can't handle live action camp. That movie looks fantastic.
I promise u it's worth it-it's a beautiful bonkers ass trip one of my favorite toku-in a similar vein Vanny Knights is even crazier bruh they on the internet archive saludos
I actually meant Cutie Honey: The Live 2007, 26 episodes-imo better than 2004 movie-Go Nagai's crazy ass himself acts in it and the whole thing is surreal af
Omg the live action Sailor Moon was my whole childhood🤩+If I recall correctly, all the main actors who played the main sailor scouts are still friends and even went to each others weddings!
I’d recommend looking into Princess Comet. To my knowledge, she’s one of the first tv shows that adapted the magical girl storylines from manga into a tv show. It came out in the 60s.
All of your views on the Cutie Honey movie were 100% correct and I was so excited to see it included! Such a unique style of live/animation and I was happy to see you explain some of that. Also, IMO, PGSM is also iconic because of their music and dance routines.
As someone who LOVES Kamen Rider and magical girl anime, why it never occurred to me to dive into the live action adaptations boggles my mind. This video has definitely inspired me to watch Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and the Cutie Honey movie. There’s something about the camp of toku that brings me so much joy.
The Fushigi Comedy Series spent a few years focused on magical girls, the most famous of which is Bishojo Kamen Poitrine, one of the influences on Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor V one-shot before she expanded the idea with Sailor Moon
As someone who loves both magical girls and dolls, I am over the moon about this video. I would also love to hear your thoughts on the precure franchise, its so vast and has so many different costume designs!
The Live Action version of Sailor Moon was pretty much the debut work for the actresses portraying the Sailor Guardians, most of them were barely out of High School when they participated!! Keiko Kitagawa (Sailor Mars in the Live Action) would end up becoming a very popular actress! Participating even in the Live Action of Promised Neverland and Paradise Kiss. She would return to the Sailor Moon franchise to voice Sailor Cosmos in the Sailor Moon Cosmos movies last year!!
Fun fact about Girls x Heroine is that it's directed by the legendary Takashi Miike, of Audition, Ichi the Killer, and Gozu fame. He's a man of varied talents!
I'm an official Old Person, so I want to give a shout out to the Toei Fushigi Comedy series, which was a tokusatsu show with quite a few live action magical girls. Off the top of my head I can think of La Belle Fille Masque Poitrine (whose series was a big influence on Codename Sailor V), Thutmose, the two "Chinese witch" series about Ipanema & PaiPai, and the series about 3 sisters with powers themed to the Year of the Rooster (can't remember the name, sorry). Toei put some of these series' early episodes up on YT with subtitles a while back, so if they're still out there & you're curious, I recommend giving them a look.
I really love Cutie Honey, she is an icon 100%. I mean not only is she a queer icon, she is also a camp icon and a pioneer of the magical girl genre. Shin Cutey Honey is a camp classic and Cutie Honey Flash has some of the most beautiful outfits Honey has, I mean Hyper Honey belongs on the runway. This franchise feels like if John Waters directed a magical girl anime.
Sailor Moon is my favorite franchise ever and I love the lie action show! Hands down, it has the best character developement of any adaptation, the story is great and surprisingly dark, especially at the end.
I've been aware of Cutie Honey ever since the live action movie came out but I never actually watched (or read) any of it, just listened to the 2004 movie theme song a lot when I was younger, and recently rediscovered it's great to sing at karaoke. Which is when I became aware of the lyrics (that I now understand), and those lyrics talk a lot about Cutie Honey's physical appeal, very much catering to a male gaze. I don't mind that but it surprised me that a song like that would be used for what I thought was a show aimed at girls. Turns out, I was wrong. That song knew who it's supposed to address.
Loved this video! I was already aware of SM and Cutie Honey, but I hadn't heard of Girls x Heroine. I might have to check that one out. I was kinda hoping you'd mention SeraMyu (Sailor Moon Musicals) during the Sailor Moon section, which has a very long history. Starting all the way back in 1993. The production quality of the older shows aren't the best, but the acting and singing are so wonderful. I highly recommend checking them out! 2.5D doesn't get enough love in the west so I'm always happy to have an opportunity to mention them!
The PGSM series is so so good! If you enjoy it then I would highly recommend tracking down a recording of the live stage show they did. The actors all look like they're having such a good time, and it's a pure joy to watch.
I totally understand the other side of the argument, that transformations shouldn't be necessary for it to count as Magical Girl, but on the other hand, it's that alter ego and transformation that separates the genre from fantasy. I don't think there's a point in calling it anything different if it's just fantasy with girl main characters and themes. Plus basing it on the transforming alter ego would make He-man a magical girl, and that just makes me smile. BTW, I now have the "C'est la vie" song stuck in my head. Time to do some karaoke.
Girls Hero gave looks and feels like Precure. It's nice that you cover other themes; perhaps another could be the ban and critique on toy guns and general violence in toys and cartoons; it could also lead to collaborations.
It was so validating to be like "i always thought the wigs and costumes in PGSM looked sooo good" and then you say the same thing like right after I was saying it out loud LOL i adore PGSM!!!!!!!!!! I need to rewatch it. All of your picks for this video were so good, I've been a big fan of Cutey Honey forever as well and knew about the Anno movie but never watched it so now Its on the list, and girls x heroine is totally new to me but its sooooo adorable from these clips. I'm always excited to see videos like this from you!!
I love live action magical girls! I think their history & contributions to the magical girl genre as a whole is so important! Thank you for giving them a highlight. If you want to explore more I would recommend "Bishoujo Kamen Poitrine" from 1990 that was a big inspiration to Sailor V and Sailor Moon, I would argue without it's success Toei/Bandai might not have approached Kodansha & Takeuchi for Sailor Moon. Another would be the 2012 "Himitsu no Akko-chan" film which is more a romcom film based on the 1962 Akko-chan manga, a pioneer of the genre. The film takes a more "13 going on 30" approach to the story I guess lol, I think it's unique.
OMG, you had me at Sailor Moon, but including Cutie Honey? 😍 Honey is one of my hubby's favorites and that movie is so much fun! We make all of our friends watch it. Also, I dunno if you know about it, but there is a Cutie Honey Cy Girl action figure/doll you might find interesting. I've taken in the one my hubby has and she hasn't aged as well as we expected (I'm in the process of a reroot on her because her hair was just unsalvagable), but it's cool that she exists!
A darling dollz video exactly the right length to watch on break? Thank you 🥹 And for the record... a video idea I've been hoping you would do is a doll collection tour... I can't see all the girls behind you and I wanna know what else is there!
It will always make me so sad that PGSM isn't easily accessible to a wider audience. I have to wonder if it's even remembered in Japan, honestly. I looooove PGSM and will always be grateful that I discovered it by pure chance. I only wish more Sailor Moon fans could share that joy with me. LOL
I remember when Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon was released. I was in high school, and DESPERATE to get my hands on it (ah, the early 2000s. Even remember I was standing in the art room). Unfortunately never did, life happened, and I forgot about it. Thank you for reminding me!
I watched a few episodes of PGSM on youtube YEARS ago and it totally hit something for me. It stuck with me, I told people about it and I was so glad hearing you talk about it! And it's wild that the Cutie Honey movie was released on DVD in Germany. I totally forgot that I own it and definitely need to rewatch it soon.
It was so cool to hear about more of these! I'd seen PGSM and Cutie Honey, but the others hadn't made it onto my radar! Thanks for the video, it's, honestly really cool seeing anyone talk about live action adaptations positively.
Fun video! I’m a huge fan of stage adaptations of anime and manga, and as an extension have gotten a bit interested in the live action TV/Movie side of things too. I really want to check these out now. I can def recommend the sailor moon musicals; they’re really excellent, and have been running since the 90s! I really enjoyed them, and I’ve actually never watched the anime or read the manga before 😂 I know PreCure just got a stage version recently too, with an all-male cast!
Cutie Honey mention‼️ I'm very glad you mentioned it cause I've been enjoying all the versions. My favorite versions are Cutie Honey F and Re: Cutie Honey.I haven't watched the movie but judging by the shots it's definitely campy af and right at my alley but Ik it's not for everybody so I recommend Cutie Honey F if the fan service isn't your thing.
what a jumpscare in my inbox but in a good way. im not a doll collector, i just like your stuff bc i think its interesting and i appreciate things i cant even begin to afford, seeing tokusatsu here shocked me. the live action cutie honey is a ride, worked on by a tokusatsu staple writer and having a cameo of go nagai himself in the show. its a fun as hell show and im glad youre also a fellow cutie honey fan
As a big fan of Super Sentai, I really appreciate you introducing me to some more tokusatsu media! The Cutie Honey Movie does sound pretty interesting!
I love cutie honey, not only she is the pioneer magical girl, she is basically the mother of ecchi manga and transformation sequences. Btw I read the manga many years ago, but I don't remember it being that bad, maybe is a little rough which makes sense since is so old and manga as a whole had a lot of narrative problems, and is noticeable in most go nagai older works, but the stories were pretty fun, well if people don't like ecchi manga would probably not like it I guess
What a cool video! I've been trying to get into actual Japanese magical girl shows more as an adult since I had access to little growing up but loved what I could read/watch. I've never heard of Cutie hOney before, and while I've seen fanart of Sailor Scout Luna I had no idea she originated from a live action show! That's so interesting!
I've always liked looking at your sailor moon dolls inthe background so it was fun hearing you talk about it Also the no fighting fighting scenes in the last one reminded me of mermaid melody if you've watched that one jgdgs
Well this did reach a new audience for you because I usually dont watch too many videos about fashion dolls. Definitely a good idea to branch off slightly.
PGSM was so fun! I haven't seen all of it, but I loved the bits I did see. And I love that Naru plays a bigger part. Though it threw me at first, since she'd been Sailor Mercury in the SeraMyu before doing PGSM, and I wanted her to just bust out "Drive Me Mercury" at some point. I'm trying to remember if you've done any videos on the SeraMyu. It would be a fun topic to talk about! And I'd love your opinion on the costumes throughout the years (Anza's first costume...ikes).
This is totally one of my new favorite videos of yours! Feels like a great companion piece to hazel's "weird tokusatsu girls" video. Hope to see you explore more unique ideas like this one in the future! Great work!
was very excited to see miracle tunes in this video thumbnail! loved that you explained toku at the start for people who might not know and completely ignored power rangers (i think this is very funny so its good) fun video
I love your content. Even if it's not about dolls. Please, do more and don't worry covering any other topics. Your voice and the way you give information is very calming and comforting, it helps me get through my anxiety during the day! Thank you for it
I love your channel. I love all the videos you’ve made. Your presentation style and you engaging manner. You’ve taught me so much about the doll collecting world and other genres too. Never stop unless you want to. I’m fully here to support your channel. Thank you Darling for all your hard work 🙏🏽💖🧸… oh and I never heard of magical girls but I’m already hooked😍💕
hey, this was hella awesome! im engaged with your fashion doll content of course, but learning about your other interests is super exciting and i wanted to let you know i am seated!!
This was a fun video! I love anime magical girls but haven't really given any live-action series a chance... so I learned about some new stuff I'm looking forward to checking out now! Very much enjoy your channel & vids in general ~ so bring on more random topics like this for us, pretty please! 💖
I only know about the live action cutie honey movie because my favorite voice actor Dan Green is in it as “Black Claw” for the English dub and it’s the only time he’s sung in a role so it makes me happy. So essentially, I can thank Cutie Honey live action for giving me the gift of Yami Yugi singing ✨💜
A bucket list wish for me is to one day work on a magical girl show. Preferably 2D since that's my wheelhouse, but who knows, maybe one day I'll end up learning the pipeline for 3D or live action. Regardless, it needs transformation sequences, and I so want to help make that stuff ✨✨✨
Bestie, never apologize for expanding your content as long as it's girlypop. I don't even collect dolls and I follow you because I like your taste and like hearing your opinions.😊
I can definitely recommend the li e action cutie honey series. Still pretty gratuitous, but the blue and white girls you see in the poster are really cool, and some of the villains are amazing, and there's great fight scenes
The minute I started watching PPGSM I knew it was something special. It's such a fun, campy, and surprisingly dark at times show, and the actors/actresses are all so endearing, especially the one who plays Usagi. Plus all the twists and deviations from the original make the series its own unique thing within the Sailor Moon canon, so even if you're familiar with the anime and manga you're still going to have a new viewing experience and not just a one-to-one remake. It's such a huge shame the show never got an official release, though I'm still keeping my fingers crossed.
I've never clicked faster on a video! I really enjoy your videos in general, but the fact that live action PGSM still makes me giggle with joy every time a senshi transforms made me click all the faster.
Are you familiar with the Magic Attic Club dolls? They aren't quite fashion dolls, more like American Girl dolls but also with a magical/time travel aspect. Designed by Robert Tonner, they have beautiful sculpts!
I don't watch anime but im starting to want the collect anime figures as well as dolls ...So I think I should start. I just ordered a Miku figure wearing pink striped pyjamas. I do love otome games though. Which is like a choose your own adventure digital manga with audio. I love characters that are half human half cat 😆
It's such a bizarre thing that happens during the live action Sailor Moon that I only realized happened after it was done. Part way through, you just.... stop noticing that Luna is a stuffed doll lmao I remember hearing about the Cutie Honey live action, but wasn't ever really a fan so didn't watch it, but tbh these scenes look amaze and I think I need to watch it now.
girlxheroines outfits have actually appeared as a collab on another takara tomy property, the pretty series saga of arcade games and anime, its about magical idols that transform and perfom, the first three series where about ice skating but then changed to idols, miracle tunes and maji majo pures costumes where in the pripara arcade, the phantomirage and love patrine costumes where on the kiratto pri-chan arcade, and the last ones costumes where on the waccha primagi arcade, who is still available but is closing soon, to make room for the next generation of the pretty series Aipri and Aipri verse (the later is an arcade game with all of the characters from previous games and anime
Fun fact: One of the monsters in Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon had a mask that’s the same as the one for the costumes of the Golem Soldiers from Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger (a.k.a. the Putty Patrollers from Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers).
I liked PGSM live action, it was awful with tthe ballet moves but the story was very good. Cutie Honey 2004 live action was INCREDIBLE, so so so well adapted. The moment they introduce Koda Kumi as Sister Jill with the gospel chorus lol. Cutie Honey Tears took itself too seriously but didnt have the budget to portray what it wanted. The other one I watched in a brazilian chanel early 90s was Mahou Shoujo Poitrine, a spinoff from Masked Rider.
I didn't mind the Sailor Moon LA, I just wish they kept the wigs on so you knew who each character was because it didn't feel like a proper LA if the actors didn't resemble the character in & out of costume
God I love the four Dark Kingdom generals costumes. I really like Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon but the only change I didn’t like was not using a blond or Silver wig for the actress when she’s Princess Serenity. It’s just the fact that she doesn’t even have her iconic odango’s makes her look so generic. Now Princess Sailor Moon, amazing beautiful.

I understand your struggle with allergies. Mine have hit me like a Costco haul, lol.
I feel you there
I know that feeling all too well. Look into investing in an air filter, they help me a ton.
You sounded fine, a bit calmer but normal.
Noooo, everything is totally fine, didn’t notice, actually lol! And the video was very fun too! Thank youuuu
Sailor Moon and Cutie Honey!?!? You're a man of culture
Agreed
So many live action adaptations wish they had a millimeter of what Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon was delivering.
PGSM is so good
Loved PGSM and the inclusion of Sailor Luna, that war a nice touch. As well as Sailor Dark Mercury.
The ven diagram of magical girl fans and doll fans overlaps, I'm sure you will be fine. I mean, have you seen people going ape shit over Winx club dolls?
Yeah
One of my favorite things about PGSM is that the actresses who played the Sailor Senshi are still friends and meet up, they often share pictures on their Instagram accounts and it always warms my heart to see them hanging out after all this time ❤

For real. He could drop an hour-long video discussing different different types of dirt and I’d click on it as fast as possible LOL

That design is so pretty ugh I wish it was in the anime too
Omg the live action Sailor Moon was my whole childhood🤩+If I recall correctly, all the main actors who played the main sailor scouts are still friends and even went to each others weddings!
Yes! I follow them on Instagram and they constantly get together 😢 I want a friendship like theirs

she made a video about sailor moon’s western doll releases but i’m not sure if there’s one about live action sm

Cutie Honey is a drag queen.
I love love LOVE the Live Action Sailor Moon! And now I'm going to watch the Cutie Honey LA Movie, thank you for the rec!! ^^
Honestly you could only make ranking videos and I’d watch all of them! But it’s still really interesting to see any and all stuff ☺️
I loved your other magical girl video so I'm so glad you did another one!!
I've always liked looking at your sailor moon dolls inthe background so it was fun hearing you talk about it
Also the no fighting fighting scenes in the last one reminded me of mermaid melody if you've watched that one jgdgs
I loveeee this video/recommendations! I immediately watched the Cutie Honey movie after this and LOVED it!!! 💗
Well this did reach a new audience for you because I usually dont watch too many videos about fashion dolls. Definitely a good idea to branch off slightly.
absolutely loved this video, hope you do more like it!
Happy to see you doing what you want!
Thank you Darling for all your hard work 🙏🏽💖🧸… oh
and I never heard of magical girls but I’m already hooked😍💕
hey, this was hella awesome! im engaged with your fashion doll content of course, but learning about your other interests is super exciting and i wanted to let you know i am seated!!
I am so excited to see what other interests you'll be telling us about!! We love u as a creator and anything you post about. ^^
I love you and your content. You never fail to make me smile.
I'll watch you talk about almost any topic. You make it interesting!
I’m looking forward to the new content!! The topics you choose are always a hit for me lol
I love your videos whether or not they focus on dolls I don't care I'll always watch!
omg i need to check out cutie honey movie. those action shots were so good!
I kinda want to see you do movie/tv/whatever reviews that are possibly easier for you to edit in between longer form content like this.
Ahh I adore this video😭 so cute and snarky at the same timeee
Bestie, never apologize for expanding your content as long as it's girlypop. I don't even collect dolls and I follow you because I like your taste and like hearing your opinions.😊
I'm here for your sense of humor. 😄
I can definitely recommend the li e action cutie honey series. Still pretty gratuitous, but the blue and white girls you see in the poster are really cool, and some of the villains are amazing, and there's great fight scenes
The last one fight scenes reminds me so much of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch fights, where basically song battles and mini concerts.
Please do a video on pretty cure, I'd love to know what you think about the current season and I remember seeing you have a Kururun
please do not apologize for having fashion student moments. In fact, please have more of them.
I love this video! Great job!
Love your videos, always! 💜
I've seen re: Cutey Honey I didn't know it was an adaptation, I liked it I might watch the live action as well!
I love your top!! I wanted to buy it but Hot Topic sold out of it very fast.
Loved the video bro!
I've never clicked faster on a video! I really enjoy your videos in general, but the fact that live action PGSM still makes me giggle with joy every time a senshi transforms made me click all the faster.
I hope you feel better! Will you be doing a review of the new Sailor Moon dolls that you have in the background?
I have the live action Cutie Honey movie. It's so good. It came in this special edition lunch box that I bought at a horror movie convention.
I gotta watch ALL THESE SHOWS
Love you doing other kinds of videos. And I absolutely loved pretty guardian Sailor Moon and cutie honey!!!’
girlxheroines outfits have actually appeared as a collab on another takara tomy property, the pretty series saga of arcade games and anime, its about magical idols that transform and perfom, the first three series where about ice skating but then changed to idols, miracle tunes and maji majo pures costumes where in the pripara arcade, the phantomirage and love patrine costumes where on the kiratto pri-chan arcade, and the last ones costumes where on the waccha primagi arcade, who is still available but is closing soon, to make room for the next generation of the pretty series Aipri and Aipri verse (the later is an arcade game with all of the characters from previous games and anime
Personally? Hearing your opinions on other related girly media has been a treat!
