Thanks for the video, knowledge is power in these border crossings. I did Phnom Penh to Bangkok via poi pet for 18USD through capitol buses about 10 years ago.
You got off the bus and queued hours to get through immigration. Got in hi-ace vans that flew on the Thai side, but dropped us in the middle of nowhere late in the evening in Bangkok. It was an all day affair. Asia does that sort of crap a lot. Hired cars with the family and did it again about 5years ago. The new processing center was heaps better, but hiring cars is expensive.

It's generally the way if the driver can't speak any English. They will have a spot they get local tuktuk drivers to drive you to your hotel included in the price, so the TukTuk drivers have First crack at you for a tour. If you do your homework these people know the best places to go.

FYI they want USD and the best place to exchange Baht or Dong is at Gold Shops through black market for the best rates. But....They did accept Dong because my USD bill weren't perfect. If you are using USD in Cambodia make sure they are clean with no marks or damage or you will be denied at most places. Travel on!

Not suprising at Poipet. I love Cambodia; and go there twice a year for business. In November 2019 I took a visa run through Poipet; the most miserable experience in Cambodia I ever experienced (and I have travelled much of the country). Our 8 hour bus ride to Poipet ended up 12 hours; causing us to miss the 9:pm deadline. Then was ripped off by tuk tuk driver; who then took me to a "good" hotel (I had expected to cross the border that night). The hotel was awful, and charged me twice the rate of Phnom Penh - and twice the rate the hotel normally charged (the rates were posted right on his desk !). This was obviously to pay off the tuk tuk driver - who came in with me to cash in on the scam. I call Poipet the "toilet bowl" of Cambodia !

The things is from Thai -cambodia border to Phnom Penh is another 550 baht with grab ,or sometimes more than that if you can't find the bus. So, if we calculate it carefully, just get on the double decker bus from mochit to Phnom Penh with 950 baht. Cos it is cost effective, time saver and more convenient. At the border, there are a bunch of group who will chase selling you for the ride. You can avoid all those 😔 troubles when you booked double decker bus with 950 baht.

Such a useful video Chris. Unfortunately Poipet is not the best intro to Cambodia but once you get through it the rest of the country is really nice. The train is an excellent way to travel from Thailand to Cambodia and its so little known. Other than the price it allows you to get to the border early which is really useful. There is nothing else for $1.50. Public thai buses from Ekamai station are good too. As you cross the border just smile and politely refuse at any offer you get for visa and taxis and walk past the casinos till you get to the one visa office on the right side that issues one month visas - make sure your country is eligible for visa on arrival. Shared taxis are a good option ... but if you ask inside the casinos they should help you find buses to siem reap for much less.

This current Western generation would be unable to go anywhere if there was no internet or You Tube videos to instruct them how to get there, what mode of travel to use and where to go as you all go to the same places.
Plus bring their entire house along with them weighing in at 25 Kilos of crap.
You are in the tropics, buy what you need as you need it, and no good reason to bring clothes from whatever Western Nation you come from.
You can always tell how long a person has been on the road by just looking at the size of their baggage.
These videos are made by tourists, for tourists and they are not travelers.

Retracing the movements of the Royal Thai Army on it's way to clash with Vichy French troops amassed throughout Northwest Cambodia in 1940. I'm referring to the Franco-Thai War of 1940-1941. For a couple of months, around 80 years ago, battles were fought in and around the towns of Seam Reap, Sisophon, and Battambang. The French were victorious at the Battle of Koh Chang (a naval battle), Japan intervened, and an armistice was brokered that favored Thailand - the war ended. Here's an excerpt from Wiki regarding some of the fighting:
"At dawn on January 16, 1941, the French launched a large counterattack on the Thai-held villages of Yang Dang Khum and Phum Preav, initiating the fiercest battle of the war. Due to poor coordination and nonexistent intelligence against the entrenched and well-prepared Thai forces, the French operation was stopped and fighting ended with a French retreat from the area. However, the Thais were unable to pursue the retreating French, as their forward tanks were kept in check by the gunnery of French Foreign Legion artillery."

Just watched this - I live here but honestly it's OK. It's more than OK actually. Yes they hassle, yes they'll transfer you into a tuk tuk etc but selling the tours to tourists will be their main source of income. Sometimes they'll ask for money up front because they don't actually have sufficient for the fuel etc. I would have told your driver to go to the nearest petrol station and I would have paid for so many dollars worth of fuel. Many are, wrongly, under the illusion that if you are from the West (ie have a white skin) , you are automatically a millionaire! Unfortunately, the way some tourists throw money around makes this view kind of understandable. Income is very unequally divided in this country and many are still struggling for money. Tourist numbers are still relatively low so I don't expect it'll change any time soon. But hey, travel's an experience and an adventure and we live and learn! It gets much easier as you understand more about what's going on.

Hello Chris first I'd like to greet you welcome to Cambodia! I watched the entire of this video and I feel so sad for your inconvenience. I am a Cambodian people but I don't like what people in this video behaved to you such as a driver keep following and a bad taxi driver leaved you in the middle of the road, Honestly sometime they not only treat badly to foreigners but also to me and other people as the same Cambodian. That's so bad and unacceptable. So sorry to you and your colleagues.

Taxi like that in Cambodia is more like a bus than an actual taxi. We Cambodian called it taxi but there is nothing taxi about. They take you from one stop to another, not to the hotel. If you want them to take you to the hotel you should have bargain with the people who were hassling you at the border. You can rent the whole car and they will take you to your destination.

To avoid hassles at the border, ignore everyone else and walk well away and then bargain whatever transport you need.

Just watched your video and you for the first time. I'd probably stick to flying from BKK to Cambodia but just want to thank you for how informative this was and at that it was truly and incredible price for that journey. It blew me away how inexpensive that was trip was for you .. Never thought anything journey of that distance could ever be that cheap in this day and age .. thanks again.

  • @ronagoodwell2709
    @ronagoodwell2709 Рік тому

Ah yes, the Cambodian taxi handoff scam. It's a lot more annoying when there's a greater distance involved. You negotiate a nice ride in a nice car with air con and the driver (talking on his phone the whole time) takes you out to a wide spot on the road and hands you over to another driver in some clapped-out beast of a car with no air con and he does the same thing until you end up the last leg of the journey riding in the bed of a truck with a gang of field workers. You finally get dropped off a long ways from the original agreed-upon destination. Everyone along the way wants to get paid and expects a tip. Turns out, what was happening was your trip was being sold along a network of drivers, like an auction. That's what the phone calls were about. Asia is truly the land of middlemen.

If you think the toilets in the trains in Thailand re bad then you are in for a shock when you get to India.
You are going to have a LOT of trouble traveling in India.
Looking as you do with Kilos of luggage they can see you have no idea where you are going.. Its normal for a Shared Taxi to stop on the outskirts of Siem Reap and then a Tuk Tuk takes you to your Hotel/Guest House. Everybody and every Hotel, Tuk Tuk Driver books Tours to Angkor Wat as they know thats why you came there, they are NOT trying to cheat you, they are trying to HELP you.
Tourist like you are the entitled Western generation.
Cheap charlies that save their money for Beer.

lol. I've been in Siem Reap for 2.5 years since I couldn't get my flight to Laos when everything shut down immediately with the Pandemic. I'm at 16:35 listening to the driver tell you "No English" when you ask if he will take you to your hotel. An experienced driver who doesn't understand "take me to my hotel"? Yeah, right. NO WAY he will take you to your hotel. I'm gonna keep watchin' to see if a miracle happens. Okay. Finished watching. You were REALLY lucky that the tuk-tuk driver wasn't part of a scam getting more money. Sounds like a nice guy.
I've lived here three times now. Observation to offer: there is a characteristic of Khmer culture with communication I see over and over and over again that might be helpful to you. When the guy tells you he will take you to Siem Reap, he IS taking you to Siem Reap, but so are other people. It doesn't mean Siem Reap or your hotel is his destination.
Another example: I moved into a very quiet apartment in Siem Reap. A few weeks later, I woke up to the trees next to my kitchen window being cut down. They were clearing the land to build something. Banging metal against metal and sawing has been constant. It's very loud. The owner of the apartments told me the people were building a small metal structure "like a street restaurant across the street" and would take one week. It did take one week, but it also took 5 MORE weeks. This is the 6th week of a build of a small brick and cement house with lots of metal framework. How we think of things and communicate that is very different between cultures.
Another thing you will see are prices MUCH higher for foreigners than for locals if you aren't careful. If you can afford it, that's great. People need help. It has been a struggle for everyone during the pandemic. I questioned one driver I got to know about the EXTREMELY high cost he wanted me to pay (over $350) when I knew the cost with others (ABOUT $160). He had no trouble explaining to me that his income had been harshly reduced during the pandemic and he didn't see a problem with making that up with charging me.
Tuk-tuk drivers telling you, "yes, yes, yes" when you ask if they know where your destination is when they really don't. People don't like to say no or that they don't know something. In those cases, the driver might take you to a place you have know idea where you are or want to charge you much more because they had to drive you around so much because they were lost. Welcome to Cambodia.
