Sorry you miscalculated your needed batter and had to bake in batches. I'm glad you finally got it figured out. Your end result is also the same as my formula for baking.
250g yields 2 layers of 6×2 inches cake. Meaning each layer will be 6 inches wide and 2 inches tall.
500g yields 2 layers of 8×2 inches cakes. Meaning each layer will be 8 inches wide and 2 inches tall.
Using the above as a guide, for every 2 inch increase in width, you have to double the batch. This means:
250g for 2 layers of 6 inch cakes
500g for 2 layers of 8 inch cakes
1kg for 2 layers of 10 inch cakes
NOTE: 250g refers to the 250g of butter, 250g of sugar and 250g of flour type of recipe.
It can also be used for oil based recipes where a full batch yields an 8 inch cake, which will in turn also yield 2 layers of 6 inches wide cakes. This means ½ a batch yields a 6 inch cake. Double the batch yields a layer of a 10 inch cake. And you keep doubling for every 2 inch increase in width.
For odd number cake sizes like 7,9,11 etc:
375g for 2 layers of 7 inch cakes
750g for 2 layers of 9 inch cakes
1.5kg for 2 layers of 11 inch cakes
Each layer is 2 inches tall.
For oil based recipes, ¾ of a full batch yields a 7 inch cake if a full batch yields an 8 inch cake.
So if I want to bake an 8 inch tall 7 inch wide cake, I'll need 750g of batter
An 8 inch tall 10 inch wide cake requires 2kg of batter
