Last year I bought a Slingerland snare with a 3 ply shell , no reinforcement rings, 10 lugs, and a plastic chrome wrap. It's the best snare I have. It's Soo responsive. It doesn't choke at any volume. Man, you sure have some sweet snare drum.
I have a 5-ply concert tomorrow kit from 1978. I think they sound way better than thin ply concert toms. More resonant. They also project really well. Great tone. I’ve used them live and in the studio and have received lots of compliments. But I love the 3-ply kits, too. Went from Slingerland to Chicago Drum, but I still use all of them!
48 and 49 large oval badge. 1950 started smaller oval brass badge. I have a few also and my 6.5 chrome over brass Gene Krupa model from 1975 is the best, brightest snare I own. Blows my 69 supra out of the water. Nice collection!
My only snare is that chrome over brass, got it for about 6 hours of labor scaping old paint off of a house for a family friend. It's incredible. I will never need another snare. Period. Cool collection btw.
Thanks for sharing, Jim. I am also a Slingerland enthusiast and have a modest collection of their snare drums. Although I have 3 Radio King snare drums of various sizes, I still prefer the 3 ply maple , poplar, maple layup as my preferred sound. Nice and fat and still responsive. Also, I have to agree on the C.O.B. snare drum. Very underrated!
Great collection Jim I have a mid sixties Slingerland Kit maple/poplar/mahogany 3 ply shells 12/14/20 with a Walnut finish. The last time I was in the shop I had the guys put some Evans 56’ heads on all the drums I’m sorry you weren’t there I’d really like to get a vintage Slingerland Snare to add to this kit right now I have a Leedy chrome snare
Last summer I walked into a local antique store and walked out with a Gene Krupa Sound King snare. As you said, a great underrated drum. Got it with the case for $40.
Great video, informative, & love hearing your collection!!
