  • This is a Motormouth couple car first look at the all-new Volvo EX30 subcompact electric suv. Introducing the all-new Volvo EX30, it’s the smallest SUV in the Volvo fleet and will be built in China. This expands Volvo’s electric vehicle portfolio to four models. The Volvo EX30 has a 69 kWh battery with two powertrain options, for maximum range go with the RWD model with up to 442 km/ 275 miles. It has 268 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque. The AWD model with 422 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque will take drivers from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and 0-60 in 3.4 seconds which makes it the fastest accelerating Volvo car ever. The Volvo EX30 gets up to 426 km/265 miles of range. The EX30 has a heat pump and it can tow close to 2,000 pounds. It has a clean look and is designed to have the smallest CO2 footprint of any Volvo car to date. The Volvo EX30 EV has a Scandinavian design with a long wheelbase, large wheels and equal front and rear overhangs giving it a balanced look. The headlights are an evolution of the Thor’s Hammer design that Volvo first premiered on the second generation XC90 back in 2015. The Volvo EX30 has five exterior colour options are available including, Cloud Blue and Moss Yellow. The 12.3” touchscreen with google built-in is your combined driver and centre display. There is no instrument cluster in this model similar to Tesla. Volvo says the touchscreen is designed to deliver high-definition visuals with minimal glare and reflections. Since everything is done in the screen, Volvo has provided smart shortcuts and you can individualize your settings. The Volvo EX30 has been priced to make it a more affordable premium option. In the US, the RWD model starts at under $35,000 and In Canada $53,700 CAD.

The EX30 looks like a great car but I am infuriated with Volvo Canada's pricing. Shame! Not only is the gap between US and Canadian pricing cavernous, but it is even greater than it seems considering that the US slaps a 27.5% tariff on cars imported from China (versus 6.1% for Canada)! Volvo loyalists (including myself, owner of a C40) will be disgusted by this gouging. Volvo is effectively stealing the buyer's federal and provincial purchase incentives.

Seems like a money grab on Volvo's part knowing that Canadian's get the rebate. I find it overpriced for the base RWD model as many Canadians would likely want AWD. I feel Volvo missed the mark for us here in Canada. Especially with that tiny back seat with no center armrest and the plethora of hard plastic. I do like the interior colour options though. I wish more auto manufacturers would start branching out from the boring black/grey interiors.

Unfortunately, with the refinements and upgrades Model 3 refresh offers, I just can't recommend the EX30 as a value purchase. In fact, Model 3HR has more premium offerings, like rear seat infotainment screen containing climate settings and LED lighting throughout. More leg room, bigger frunk, and a more insulated cabin for noise reduction.
      Model 3HR: $54,400
      Volvo EX30: $53,700
Volvo should've kept it's promise of one pricing, which would've had the EX30 in Canada starting at $48,000. I'd never recommend the EX30 over Model 3HR, that's just a bad purchase. The $48k tag would've made it a more competitive vehicle.

@chags3512 Interior dimensions definitely puts the EX30 with the Model 3, Chevy Bolt EUV, Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Kona and Genesis GV60. The Model 3 actually has more storage than the EX30.

When I heard the starting price was just under $35k USD, I was hoping for mid $40s in Canada. Since most of us would want AWD, perhaps about $50k for that model. That would have put it in line with my Venza (which was $48k). The small size doesn't bother me since I don't need a large vehicle. I think this unit should have a HUD so you don't need to look at the center stack (even if it does have nice image quality). I also like the use the regular door handles. I'm not a big fan of the squircle steering wheel, but it's certainly better than the yokes some brands are using. I guess my main concern would be the fact that many EVs in China are catching on fire. I think for me, until the battery chemistry improves (longer range, lower weight, lower cost, lower safety risk), I'd likely pass on an EV. They are still too expensive and have too many drawbacks to a traditional vehicle for now. I think the best option currently is regular hybrids. My Venza uses half the gas of gas only vehicles in its class, is more reliable and the hybrid upcharge is only about $2000 with Toyota.

In regards to the price disparity… I suspect when you trade it in… in Canada, that tweaked price difference will be to dealerships advantage. In other words, get this car if you want to get screwed TWICE. Enough with these incentives. Every incentive is, basically what the government will spend YOUR money on…despite the fact that you wouldn’t risk/lose/spend on ‘something/anything’ your hard earned money on… yourself! There was ZERO incentives to go from cassette tapes to compact disc (VHS->DVD, etc)…. Whenever something makes logical financial/home/relationships sense, you gladly pay the difference. The government needs to get out and stay out of our wallets. Sorry to rant. Thanks for the video.

Curious to see what lease rates are offered. If you get that low USA price plus the EV rebate via the lease - what a steal. I'm also excited about the interior options, which show imagination not seen in the market since the BMW I3. I think this is such a clever path for the Chinese to slip unnoticed into the US market in a big way. I predict a runaway hit. On our second XC-40 right now and love it. So here’s my thoughts. I can accept that Geely owns Volvo. I just purchased a 2024 XC60 mild hybrid. I did so knowing that the assembly, and the engine come from Sweden. Transmission from Japan. Accessories and parts from all over Europe. Nothing about my vehicle “promotes”China. As Geely begins to “Chinafy” the Volvo brand, they will fall out of favor with me. I would rather spend my money on a German or Italian equivalent. I sure do hope the good people of Sweden continue to produce models of Volvos and that components and assembly can still originate and occur outside of China. If all that goes for Chinese, this will be my first and last purchase.

Reading comments some people need to educate themselves on the Volvo/Geely relationship. Volvo is a Swedish car company with a Chinese parent company. Also, made in China is just where the factory is that makes this car. The same specs could have the car made in Belgium, but Belgium makes the XC40 and C40. It's not because the car is less expensive that it is made in China as Volvo's flagship S90 sedan is built in China. And Lotus, another brand purchased by Geely, is building their $100K luxury SUV in China. China is just a location that has factories. The cars built there range from low price to very high priced. Some Volvos are made in Volvo owned factories in China and some are made in Geely factories (but spec'd by Volvo Sweden).
As for this Volvo, Volvo made a video that some people commenting should watch. It shows the personnel in Gothenburg who chose the fabrics for the seats, chose the computer systems, safety systems, and so much more than goes into the building of this car, the EX30. It showed the English interior designer Lisa Reeves who headed the design of the car and is located in Gothenburg. This is not a Chinese product designed by Geely. Geely provides the SEA platform and maybe some electronics but most of the car is a European designed and engineered car Volvos have always been. Volvo did not suddenly turn into Geely when Geely purchased them. In fact, to the contrary, Geely prides itself in backing its acquired brands to be self-managing and fairly autonomous and finances them to build the cars they are capable of building. So, unlike Ford, Volvos are less compromised than they were under Ford. Of course, there is cost sharing and some common parts between brands but few of them make the brand. So, that's a win-win for all the brands under Geely.

You still have to ask the question: Why not buy a Tesla? In the US, the Model 3 is cheaper with its tax credit. You can also look at the Chevy Bolt (for now), Nissan Leaf or potentially the Chevy Equinox EV for something cheaper. Seems like you really have to want a Volvo. Why not just make it more premium and charge a bit more?

    • @MrLogansimmons

I've yet to be in a Tesla that is anywhere near as well built in terms of body solidity as a Volvo. Not everyone likes Teslas. I like Toyotas and Volvos and BMWs and Hondas, and in part because of their build quality. Teslas don't cut it so I don't care how much "cheaper" they are. They don't appeal to me and they don't appeal to some others. If you like them and want them, fine. But no make is for everyone's tastes and priorities. This Volvo has Volvo qualities and if you want Volvo qualities in a less expensive product, this is in the entry level to Volvo.

Very interested in this one. I live in one of the few places in Canada where AWD is really not necessary. I would be more interested in the AWD with smaller motors (I really do not need 0-100 in 3 second range). And yes, it is spartan. It seems to me more like a better done tesla than tesla (I do not need to carry 5 adults, but I can use the extra storage, as it pretty well matches the tesla model 3 in a smaller package.

    • @supertouring1
      @supertouring1 8 місяців тому

Yes, yes, I wholeheartedly agree. There is too much obsession with acceleration for EVs. I would be more interested in AWD via 2 x 50hp or 75hp motors. I'm guessing that would still give a 7-10sec acceleration time. That said, the range improvement with such a combination is probably only 20-40km.

For that money and the quality I would go for the VW ID.3. Who needs 300 hp in a small car, that is in my opinion the wrong accents. It is not build to be a race car. The VW is slightly more expensive, delivers much more space, much bore build quality and with the new facelift also a good userterface, a screen behind the steering wheel and the option to have a head up display as well. Or ofcourse a Tesla 3. The Zeekr X that is coming out can also be a better choice, I am still waiting for the first test, but like also to stick with European or US build cars when possible.

This is almost as expensive as the Tesla Model Y in RWD, what will it cost in AWD?
Both the RWD and AWD model Ys are eligible for 5000$ fed but the RWD is also eligible for 7000$ Qc EV rebate… that’s 12,000$ off both the EX30 and Model Y RWD versions. Effectively less than 7000$ difference just over 6000$ However, the local Volvo dealer here in montreal states 57,359+tax. That would mean less than 3000$ difference.
I just wonder with deliveries in late 2024, we can expect the new Model Y (Juniper) version out by then and by late next year the all new model “2” which will be in the size category of the EX30… but around 25,000 USD$
It all sounds a bit off to me.
Although I do like the Volvo aesthetic.
