I am no expert but as I am aware Imad ad Ding Zengi never captured Damascus. He attempted to do so but never managed to do it. Neverthelesss he married the mother of the prince of Damascus. She was regent at the time but couldn't reject such a good match. Her dowry was Homs. After another few failed attempts to capture damascus he went north where he eventually took the city of edessa. Nur al-Din, Zengis son was able to capture it in 1154. Damascus surrendered to him after he had besieged it and cut off their food supply which lead to high bread prices. Chiefly responsible for the negotiations which lead to the surrender was no other than Ayyub the father of Yusuf Salah al-Din ibn Ayyub also known as "Saladin".

The Zengids were probably the most successful Muslims during the crusades. Nur Ad-Din ravaged the crusader states and barely lost a battle. He would have been a more fitting foe against Richard The Lionheart than Saladin.
