- It's a festive tradition to get a bit scared and that's what we're doing this week, as we look at the gruesome story of St Bees Man.
Archaeologists typically get excited when they find ancient dead bodies, so you can imagine what happened back in 1981 when an almost perfectly preserved Medieval knight was discovered in the grounds of the Priory Church in St Bees, on the Cumbrian coast.
But who was this surprisingly sprightly cadaver? Watch this video to find out.

Wasn't sure quite where you were Wikipedia tells me that the Wainwight walks start in St Bees and that the excavation was done by the University of Leicester!!
For one terrible moment at the end I thought you were going to do a Reggie Perrin on us ....... I guess we'll have to wait for a future visit to Dorset for that!!

It is intriguing - seems like an extraordinary undertaking - and his mates were left there. Perhaps it’s not him, although everyone seems pretty convinced.
The Wainwright Coast to Coast walk does start in St Bees and ends Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast.

PS I would be thoroughly amused if someone wore a three-piece suit, an old-style dress shirt and a Trilby (?) hat in Newcastle, Australia in August (winter). You wouldn't survive wearing it this time of the year (January).

@@WC21UKProductionsLtd No, it is high humidity we have had to contend with every day of this summer. So much for Senior El Nino and a dry hot summer. The temperatures are only reaching 27 degrees Celsius but 96 percent humidity makes it feel like we are living in Darwin or Singapore. But far better than just above freezing.

@@WC21UKProductionsLtd Not unless you can obtain tweed shorts, safari tweed jacket ( matching of course) and a pearl silk shirt. Broad brimmed panama hat or carry a umbrella. Essential if you (a) don’t want skin cancer or (b) look like a over ripe tomato.

😬🤣🤣 Watched a UA-cam vid last year Who was St. Bee’s Man, documentary about the find. Archaeology was very basic in the 80’s . No risk assessments, no health and safety, no gloves, don’t take the lead casket to a sterile place to to open it, just grab the nearest crowbar 🤣🤣. Valuable information probably contaminated.😞

I really enjoyed this one. But one thing strikes me as odd. Why exhume a corpse from a Churchyard in the first place? Was it just because he was so well preserved? It's not like they built anything there. It's amazing how well he was preserved. What happened to him after? A brilliant telling of the tale. Thanks for sharing and a Merry Christmas to you and all those you love.
He was re-buried in the same place
Thank you! They were looking for the remains of the Saxon priory and stumbled across the vault. He was wrapped in lead, so I suppose they couldn’t resist having a look! He was reinterred next to the vault.
