Now Linus will make every video with broken iMac in background
Spliter implying apple didnt make to be exclusively for interior decoration
$5000 worth of background decoration
still cheaper than some paitings made off painted black fabric :D
Nice idea!
I'm surprised that he didn't rip out the CPU and tried putting it in one of those boards
Excellent video.
If you need ECC and if you are low on budget: AMD is your friend! Else, you will pay a lot for marketing reasons...
yup, no reason not to go with 16 core amd if you need ecc and say fuck you to intel while saving $1000+
I need this high markup stuff to level up my: Imago, rank and ego. I'm better than you, much better.
if you work on a code that needs Intel compilers for optimization, then yes you probably need an intel chip. Some of the vector architecture can be different vs AMD. Chip dependent though, I absolutely hate Intel, but bought a W 2135 because I needed ECC and was very worried about compiler optimization with intel parallel compilers.
Great point. Wish we'd brought this up...
technically the compiler will run on AMD (hell it will even run on arm) but you wont be able to test your code/debug it so i get your point.
Good old Linus!!
good seeing you here
Haha! - Awesome!! :-)
Not without Tunnel Bear
Nothing is awesome without tunnel bear!... ?!?!?
Ohh, not you AGAIN! haha
You guys are always make such great videos with real useful info.
Video is titled "total ripoff..."
Starts by showing the broken iMac that Apple refused to fix. Yup, perfect title.
I think that's more about getting some sort of return for his money. I'd still show you pictures of my wrecked Tesla if I had one.
If they show enough of the iMac maybe apple will replace it for pr reasons. That of course doesn't mean a regular consumer can get any kind of help from apple.
kuugeli you know you have no hope when a massive channel like ltt can't even convince apple to help them despite videos and numerous mentions
Mekronid just drones who come back year after year to buy the same thing without any care about what else is out there or how people are treated
Mekronid They think their customers are that stupid.
Was I the only one expecting “Smells like bullshit” when he sniffed the CPUs?
twinblade98 some people enjoy the scent of bullshit. I myself am a dog shit person.
he did it, in my mind..
An actual video from were you can learn something, good job!
This is the Video style I love. Linus doing stuff and talking LIVE about whatever he is doing
I just finished getting my 8700k stable at 5ghz, and the 1:14 came, i got a heart attack.
My VPN is up for renewal soon. I've always used purevpn because they are based in Hong Kong and they are not required to hold records etc. Linus can you make a video labeling the difference pros and cons between many vpns? Why should we buy what you recommend? Only because you get a kickback or something else? I think it would be a great video.
Tech MD UA-cam He said in the video about him and tunnel bear “breaking up” that they try to choose the best vpn to sponsor them because they have so many that come to them and they have a choice of who to choose.
Carson Reeder agreed buy why do they choose them!
I use PIA (Linus's sponsor) and have no complaints. You can even pay them in gift cards.
Nord VPN is the best. Both for speed and privacy! It supports torrents as well. I wouldn't recommend pure VPN to anyone, the reason:
www.goldenfrog.com/blog/purevpn-no-log-claims-false
When Linus switched to PrivateInternetAccess, I wasn't surprised. I've been using PIA for 3 years now and never had an issue with them. Depending on your distance to the VPN server you use, they are typically good enough for gaming. I've forgot to turn my VPN off a few times before I gamed online, but the difference was very negligible.
Thanks Linus I appreciate all these educational videos they have made me much more knowledgeable.
I love your channel and your transparency Linus
Is there any value in comparing the LGA 2066 chips to the LGA 3647 Xeons? Does Xeon W act as a cheap alternative to Xeon Platinum/Gold?
Christian Stout "cheap"
Cheap for ol trumpo
Christian Stout do the gaming studios store\test plenty of number of raw source code on Xeon workstations & server?
Yeah, that's the main idea, with the higher cost of the Gold chips, the W is lower priced to prevent workstation users from jumping to i9
Christian Stout i9 makes more sense than the W xeon.
The iMac Pro in the background just to remind us of the devastation that Apple has caused.
well technically they didn't cause that
but they refused to fix their product..
MetalEagle TV
Yet they say no. That will be their last mistake.
Jun they refuse for fix multiple other devices
They aren't allowed to fix the product because Linus messed with the internals. It is stated in their terms and conditions. They even said so in the email he showed but he decided not to address it.
Awesome editing skills !!!!
Great vid! Was hoping for more Ryzen+ stuff, but I guess finding something unique is a bit hard at this point.
The main difference between the Xeon CPU's and the standard i9 is the amount of PCIE lanes, memory channels, and maximum memory support along with ECC and a couple other chip features for virtualization.
Workstations are so much more than just Xeon CPUs. When you buy one you are looking for a system that has been extensively tested for stability with certain applications, excellent OEM support and something that is designed for 24/7 operation. And these systems still happen to come with Xeons.
Could u please tell me, what are the mother boards and model number good to build workstation for server and gaming purpose?
Great video. Really easy-to-understand.
the scene with core vs. xeon as people was great. love it
I think that to test the diffrence between the 2 you need to put both chips under a 50% workload for a month or longer and see who keeps up better. To my knowledge a Xeon chip is made to sustain a very high and intensive workload for a very long time, where as a Extreme edition is made to perform under peak load and performance bursts.
Linus forgot his Origin sponsor in the description.
OOF
Excellent excellent excellent! Great review video. I've had this question for years. So if you're building a business workstation, it's easy to see that you wouldn't choose Xeon for that application. If you're building a server (and who these days are not using a hypervisor of some sort / private cloud) you'd really need that ECC capability. Even more so when overcommit memory for production workloads. If I had build a dev only server then i may go CORE. But on the horizon is looking to go software defined for routers/firewalls and various telephony apps and wan opt so unfortunately 10k for a good entry level 1RU server it has to be.
Love your videos and your investigations :D
Just get an X399 and Threadripper with ECC memory. An actual workstation set up, real workstation memory, much cheaper and with an upgrade path.
"Any" X399 motherboard isn't workstation grade. There is a quality difference.
Mr B thank you. They keep comparing two different segments.
Epyc is what is comparable with Xeon
Threadripper is more comparable to the i9 line up
The Epyc is indeed the AMD equivalent of an Xeon, and the Threadripper is a i7/i9 counterpart. That said, since Threadripper does support ECC, even if there are issues with how uncorrectable errors are handled. However, the Epyc is only a partial response to Xeon's, since the platform only supports 1 and 2way configurations, 4 and 8way, which can be had with Xeon's, isn't something Epyc is designed for. They would have to cut the bandwidth of the infinity fabric connecting the sockets to somewhere between half and a quarter, or increase the speed it communicates at, a lot. Both are unfeasible, Epyc will remain a 2 socket max solution for the time being.
However, just as can be seen with Intel i3 workstations, you don't have to use a Xeon/Epyc to build a workstation. The CPU isn't where the quality differences are, and a workstation grade motherboard could be produced for pretty much any CPU that supports ECC. Which is clearly to AMD's advantage, even as, as i mentioned before, they have some issues with how they handle uncorrectable ECC errors, on non Epyc CPU's.
Cant pull one of the top of my head, but there are ATOM based workstation boards with integrated CPU, no reason you cant develop one for Ryzen, or Threadripper CPU's.
When you say ECC is better for mission critical aplications. Like, do I need ECC memory to watch youtube while scratching my testicles?
yes
Goddamit... now I'll have to spend a fortune...
Go AMD! ECC support on the cheap!
That depends, will you be so jarred by a blue screen that you gash your left nut?
Better not risk it.
or go a few gens older, grab your very own Dell Precision beast filled with XEON, ECC Memory and QUADRO used that some office with too much fucking money thinks is outdated as its 2years old
Great Video Linus!
Another excellent video from Team Linus! I would LOVE to see a video on building the Ultimate Business Workstation and the testing. Something that would run 4 massive monitors and as many application as possible (like in a Help Desk Environment). Giving the most "Desktop" possible for multiple applications. Lets call it a system for someone doing Technical Support for CAD, Video Editing and/or Database support. The system would have to be able to run the same software as the client who called so needs to be as fast as F^%k.
Oh dang. Linus is on a warpath against Apple , Nvidia and Intel lol. Go AMD? Go?
nah he dont give a fuk
Brian LO is a R3 1200 a good deal for $89 ? Brand New ?
Why would you not be when they are all taking the piss at the moment ? Sure i think i will stick with nvidia as i need the best to run 4k but honestly for the CPU as much as i love my x99 and 5930k ..... RIP intel for my next update . And apple can fuck off too , i am fed up being an unpaid QA tester for apple server.app and open directory
Idk bout that. Apple always rips people off calling it "experience"
Nvidia just started bending people over with the GPP bullshit.
And intel is trying to rip off thru name branding with little differences between pro/consumer chips
AMD is just the only one not being stupid at this time. Stand by. Lol
N8teDaawg 2002 go up to the Ryzen 5 4c 8t chip, trust me it's worth it.
This is why I went with AMD Ryzen for my build
I don't mind sitting through advertisements for a channel that does nothing but tell the truth I love this dude
that drop timing at the end advertisement
what about EPYC?
I still expect to hear a plug for tunnelbear. watched too many videos I guess. :D
Martin J 😊 what happened to tunelbear? 🐻
They got bought by McAfee or something
ua-cam.com/video/RNG4-9BqUIQ/v-deo.html
I'm in love with my 7820x! Tears through games and Adobe Premier! Such a good chip for $400 (black Friday). Runs at 4.8Ghz w/o issue.
Wow thanks Linus, you earned a re-subscription.
I'm configuring an HPC for a professor to do work with Solidworks and ANSYS and I was just wondering, 'What the hell good is a Xeon anyways!?'. I had chosen the i9-7980XE and this video has cemented that choice. Great luck on my part, I was comparing passmark scores all day today.
higher end xeon w gets you more cores
4:22 - last bar "97th percentile" when 66 doesn't equal 66
I never understood the misconception that Xeon's were not good gaming CPUs.
I've used Xeons in the last three systems I've built because you can buy 6 and 12 core CPU's on eBay for literally $50 that perform just as well as their i7 counterparts.
In short, because usually Xeons have lower clock speeds than the i7 chips, and games usually benefit more from higher clock speeds than more cores.
Clock frequencies may have been important in a single floating point twenty five years ago, but it's not the case anymore.
My Xeon, clocked at 3.35 GHz is plenty fast enough to handle all of my work load. (And I've had them as low as 2.8 Ghz that worked just as well.)
Fast enough? Yes. But the reality is that for gaming a higher clock speed will result in higher frame rates. Many, many tasks are very single threaded heavy. Consider music production - in most cases you'll benefit far more from fewer, faster cores than many cores at slower clock speeds.
Thank you Linus for explaining.
I still have my old pc from 9 years ago still plays everything good ! :) all this stuff is nuts
Up to 14 USB 2.0, that's crazy!
why would anyone want and pay extra for 14 usb 2.0 when usb 3 is 10x faster than 2.0, just buy a usb hub
juan carlos Palomino I think it was a honest mistake
juan carlos Palomino id rater sli multiple usb's
"USB 2.0 in 2018 lol"
Literally every PC accessory is usb 2.0 even in 2018, it's more widely used than usb 3.0 even today. The only thing that uses 3.0 is external hard drives and ssds. 14 usb 2.0 ports is pretty amazing if you want something like a 7 gamer one CPU trick where you could attach 14 mice+keyboards.
shintel back at it again
Just A guy here and you're an intel fanboy
You're all a bunch of fanboys. No better than console peasants.
PaneledPear6555 at least most fanboys unlike console peasants can see above 60FPS so there's that.
Brad Clapp word
Kvlt Ov Freki not all console gamers are peasants, guys who knows their console ISN'T powerful compared to today's standard, isn't a console peasants
only the guy who says blah blah blah our console is powerful than today's PC is a peasants
I'd love to see the comparison between the two lines while running modeling software, and virtualization.
Good stuff, but raises more questions. Would like to see a "soup to nuts" review of how Ryzen and Threadripper deal with ECC memory. Was under the impression they didn't offer all the error correction features that Xeon (or Epyc) did.
Intel doing Intel scam
Like it's something new...
I know tailosive tech is a small channel but his second response to your imac video was pretty good. You guys should check it out
It's been a while since I've had to build a server but it was always my understanding that Xeon was for servers. That in some cases it might be a little slower but in the day to day serving up web sites and database crunching, it was the workhorse for the job. Additionally, it was supposed to handle more heat so if a data center overheated, the Xeon would run longer at higher temperature. I had this happen once. Data center ran at 120 degrees... But with the reliability of data centers these days, if you can't use Duel processor with it anymore, I don't see much advantage!
Why not an AMD EPYC coverage?
Cause it's expensive and AMD won't sponsor a video.
Why would anyone in this audience need to know anything about a data center cpu?
cheaper than xeon-w
Why *wouldn't* AMD sponsor that?
Maybe because they're flying off the shelves faster than they can make them...
why not c420?
Because Linus would do another Bong Cooling video.
Too dank 4 intel.
I would likes c420 amg
c422 is c420 too
look at 1:20
Generally the best place to look is in the companies architecture and developer manuals. As for which is best a lot of it comes down to personal choice and what is most important at the time.
Xeon processors offer addition MSRs (model specific registers) not available on desktop hardware. These fine tuning knobs can make a big difference in data center applications.
I am confused why anyone would pay out the ass for an Origin build
Did you drop intel?
Business is business, I don't think dropping the deal would benefit either party. I could be wrong of course o.O
Yeah, but it's all about advertisements. Even if it's bad advertising, it's still a lot of exposure to 5.6 million people.
"but"? I didn't suggest anything different. O.o
John haha no, I was agreeing with you!
He's probably negotiating his price.
I'd be interest to see how they stack up in AutoCAD and ZBrush. We primarily use Xeon/Fire Pro based systems for our AutoCAD stations and usually Xeon/Quadro for ZBrush stations (which usually also are Photoshop machines). Some of our video editors use i7 gaming rigs for Premier, but our designers and animators won't entertain the idea of these consumer machines. Also, a "Blue Screen" probably would cost more than $100 if we lost an hour or two of work.
You should process tests on clean systems.
8:26 BSOD with a cursor?
Also known as a montage, or a staged scene. It is, of course, only a full screen image, supposed to look like a BSOD, since a bitflip spontaneously happens like every once in a while. Like 10-100 during a PC's lifetime. The odds of this happening in a crucial memory location, causing a BSOD, is so small that it is insignificant. Setting up a camera, and waiting for it to happen, just to document it, isn't feasible.
JulianSauco there is software that can simulate a bsod.
Guys, it was a joke.
I would put money on the manufacturing cost of an i7 in the same ballpark as an i9, they have always charge significantly more for different products because they can.
It'd be great if you added the text "winner" (or a crown, whatever xD) to the best bar. You're constantly switching between graphs with "lower is better" and "higher is better" in rapid pace. It's impossible to follow!
Besides that, great video!
its been nearly a year since epyc released. could you make a comparison for that from any intel xeon with similar price point?
I don't understand much tech stuff but it's fun to watch xD
linus makes everything interesting to audience. i bet if he reviews a rock or an egg, it'll still come out good and has a lot of views.
Gotta go fast
I still remember that creepy laugh in Devil's canyon video.
Mantas Jurksa What?
Random Stuff me when I hear linus jump an ad on me
Random Stuff just watch that video
2 sponsors in 1 video, Linus is on another level
Nice Vid Grats, my friend Just improve sound ok ?
Oh well, at least it's not an Apple-product.
Chocolate Sheep u right apple is trash
Chocolate Sheep's name works perfectly. Not only has he got sheep in his name he is an Apple sheep
Chocolate Sheep nope
Comment sections are some much fun lol
That imac in the background remind me why apple is overrated company
I'm thankful i've let go of appl since the bullshit I got as support for my 2010 mac mini that just stopped booting up. They outright refused to fix it for god knows what reason.
this stupid comment reminds me the majority of the world's population is retarded
Chocolate Sheep because their not a apple fanboy like you?
Bob Smith maybe
hapylestat or maybe you are a jerk?
it is not the ECC memory doing the correction, which is the way Linus said it, it's the chipset / cpu memory controller doing the ECC correction. The memory only contains the extra ECC parity bit, ..!
what would be an ideal setup for editing of photos, video (supporting 4k-8k) and gaming?
5:11 Clearly Intel paying you to make the Xeon bar higher in the "97th percentile" category despite the matching values...
Even i9 is ripoff too. AMD Ryzen Threadripper FTW !!!
I like the subtle shade towards apple what with leaving the pc out in the open all subtle like
. . . with a subtle undertone of extra PCI Express Lanes . . .
Linus Cooking Tips - Easter egg
I knew this was the case. In one of the previous iMac pro videos, I asked why apple was using Xeon when skylake x is cheaper and as fast/faster. But no one replied.....
Of course nobody answered. Apple doesn't have an official spokes-person on UA-cam, and nobody else then Apple, knows why they do stupid shit...
Linus, couldn't you use the logic board of the iMac Pro and build a custom tower PC? That would be fun as hell!
Apple probably has bullshit chips everywhere on that thing to prevent any type of customization.
This is exactly right, we took apart a new iMac in our office because it kept losing video output (common issue, unfixable). We were unable to salvage shit, we didn't need the SODIMMs or the HDD so we just tossed the whole fucker; such a goddamn waste.
Rodolfo Antonici are you suggesting that apple can make a product that is not PROPRIETARY?!?!?!?!?
NANI?!?!?!?
He fried the logic board.
Who has the time for that? I have two hours of free time a day and no way in hell want to rip a part a old PC.
Where is the limited origin pc offer in the description?
Big question for your editing at Linus tech tips and media group what are you using? Is it ECC memory or no again the emphasis is on editing and not gaming
pretty sure a xeon w is and has always jsut been hedt processors with ECC support even since as far back as the westmere EP cpus
CaptainEO420
The further differentiation between high end and workstation CPUs is pretty much why I won't use Intel for the high-end spectrum, when AMD does high-end and server together. I mean to do some always-on and other workstation/server roles in the future build.
the differences now are a rather high price mark up and the need for a different board
Only exons have ECC support and yet I just went to intels site and saw an i3 7th gen with ECC support.
Didn't he actually mention that? The point was that the higher core count CPUs don't do ECC without that huge premium. You can't just swap to an i3 if you NEED all that processing power.
And i5s and i7s of the 7th generation have ECC as well.
Xeons are typically brought by businesses not gamers.
Hi best tech UA-camr!!!
As a side note, good move to have the teleprompter remote visible, so "the move" does not look anymore like balls adjustment!
What's funny is that it used to be the other way around - Intel offered the same core, on the same socket, as a Xeon for less than as a "Core Extreme". Big example were the Core 2 Extreme QX9775 for the "Skulltrail" motherboard. You could use two Xeon X5482, which were the same processor - but cost half as much at the time.
I think the Xeon's are binned better thats why they don't have Turboboost max but just faster stock speeds, And thats why the core i7/9's need a bit more help to reach those higher clocks which is where the program comes in.
Still kinda stupid though.
Not at all. The justification is simply separation of markets. Intel doesn't want their consumer line-up to eat into the workstation/small server market. The latter allow for higher margins so artificial barriers like lack of ECC-support or disabled vPro-options are introduced to keep the two market segments apart from each other.
Basically they use the same silicon and simply disable functionality to create different product lines (e.g. by just disconnecting or re-routing some pins).
Rip tunnelbear
Torgaurd VPN was advertised by Google on your video 😆
Linus going full savage on Apple and Intel. I love this.
4-22-2018
-Linus is a intel shill
-Linus is biased
4-23-2018
-Good old linus!
-Linus is back!
Yeah, they do rip off. However, they don't rip off us, the normal consumer. They rip off companies that absolutely *need* the ECC-memory support. Even if it would cost that much more, companies like Google/Facebook would/will buy it. The demand for servers is so high, and it is continuously going up. Think about it. If Google for example did not use ECC-Ram, with the huge amount of servers / workstations that they have, statistically, they will at some point run into ram issues, which can cause serious damage if it comes to data loss. Even just a crash of the system can cause dozen times more damage then the actual ECC-Ram capable systems extra cost would cost them.
I am totally fine with that to be honest. It would be great if AMD did that in a similar way aswell, so that the consumers cpus could maybe cost even less over time, compensated by companies paying more for ecc support.
Supply and demand my friend. Intel knows it can get away with that sort of price so they do it
How is it a rip off when the companies buying these products can make the money back within a night lol.
To these companies this is normally priced. Don't forget some of these companies get millions maybe even billions in revenue.
ASRock is now supporting ECC on the mainstream Ryzen + platform. (B450/X470). Mind Blown.
Linus! What could you do with an extreme budget intel atom processor?
Core i3 9th Gen the best processor.
You heard it here first folks.
sameer mohideen
Waiting for the 6 core i3 in the 11th gen
12c/36t pentium with revolutionary intel "on demand threads" and "giga threadding". "Pay for power", doubleing your corecount for an easy subscription of 14,99$ per month.
I know someone that built a budget gaming rig with the latest i3, and he was very surprised how well it does.
Chrinik Hey, don't give them nasty ideas
Ha im using core 2 duo e8400 and i have to be honest its good for things and pre 2016 gamimg.
#LinusLATETips
true
Lmao
#wan_Show
Check his shirt back
I know i'm #First I don't need the back of Linus's shirt to tell me that.
නියමයි හොඳේ.......
Man ive been using private internet access for more then a year, nice to see you sponsored by it 😂
Appel and intel make fun of us
Agreed, when you put them together you get a $15,000 machine that can't be upgraded or even fixed - they are laughing at us
Apple has been moving away from using Intel though.
Or did you mean separately laughing at us?
Apple and AMD are partnering to create a cpu
0ooTheMAXXoo0 yes
The research shows that procreating with your third cousin is exactly the most optimal reproductive strategy, Linus. I didn't expect such spurious, unresearched claims to come out of your editing department of all places. 1:15
www.scientificamerican.com/article/when-incest-is-best-kissi/
Wincest
Selpyilgen He said cousins not third cousins. 😑
Third cousins. Just enough genetic distance to get away with it. Just close enough to still be creepy. Lol...
Your family reunions must be weird.
OMGOMGOMG!!
9:24 "Which I would totally recommand that you join" XD
2:05 - OH MY GOD! I have the same "head flashlight" like these hanging in the right. I'm almost like LTT now!
AMDtop!!!!!!!!
Xeons or for servers. They don't give you better gaming performance but they can run a whole server. Done.
Hence why they had the non-gaming multithreaded loads as benchmarks?
infinitelyExplosive he shouldn't of had gaming benchmarks period.
i use a xeon for gaming and have no issue running new titles on an 8 year old workstation
also ill add its a w series xeon as well. the w's are powerhouses with a nice overclock
Xeon CPUs are used n workstations as well, for things like video editing, engineering apps, and large data modeling apps. Even so, they are good enough to run any game, as long as they have the right video card (ie. they can feed a high end video card well enough so that the video card isn't being hindered by the cpu). Xeons typically had more L2 cache than Core i7/i9 cpus, although this may have changed, and most of the Xeon mainstream CPUs had 4 channel data busses, not dual channel data busses like the Core i7s.
I am personally using a Lenovo C30 workstation; a dual Xeon workstation (2 X Xeon E5-2690 (8C/16T each)) with 32GB ECC RAM, a 256 GB SSD, 2TB mechanical drive, and a GTX 960 GPU). Total cost was about $CAN800, without the GPU cost factored in. It performs very well in day to day productivity, does remarkably well in video editing, and games just fine. I Canada, the entire system costs less than half of a Core i9-7900x CPU alone.. Is the core i8-7900x faster? Maybe, but it will cost me upwards of $CAN2500 to build a Core i9-7900x to find out. A Threadripper 1950X would be in the same price range as the Core i9 system. maybe a few hundred less. I will stay with what I have.
I'm so glad you guys are using blender as a benchmark :D
Why did I just get an ad from a PC company localized in the Netherlands? I am now buying exclusively from Cool Blue
