Phil's comment @ the very end was perfect: "Now gone to join Mick & Robin." I'm still weeping.
I loved that and Tony saying he lived a good life.
In my mind and heart, there can be no greater measure of success than that.
RIP Victor. Rarely am I literally saddened by the death of somebody I've never met. One of humanity's finest has surely been taken, but bless him, he blessed us.
This comment really does justice to Victor’s passing and just how sad it is to have lost such a talented man.
A very talented man. Time Team was my father’s favourite program, he always wished he was an archaeologist. Victor was one of his favourite parts of the show. My father passed the week before Victor, so in his memory I am rewatching Time Team and enjoying Victors fantastic art. It has been a sad month. I would like to think my dad is sitting for Victor, being drawn as a Viking. ✍️🙏
I am sorry for your loss. 🥀
My condolences on your loss. I'm glad you can watch this as something your father would have loved. It's similar with my mum. Sending wishes for peace.
Sorry for your loss
What a lovely thought.
I believe in a future resurrection, into Paradise right here on a cleaned-up earth, for all our loved ones who now rest peacefully in our Heavenly Father's memory. I look forward to seeing exactly what you described, and meeting those two fine gentlemen.
Acts 24:15
Psalm 37:10,11
I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope that you feel your father's presence as you rewatch Time Team. ❤️
Coronation Street was something that my Granny and I shared, and when I watch it, I still try to imagine what her reaction would be to the storylines.
Tony, I love what you said about Victor. I was a student in his drawing class at Farnham School of Art way back in the 1960s. He was always a gentleman, soft-spoken, gentle, courteous, thoughtful, and very patient, and just as you have described him. Yes, indeed, he lived his life very well.
His gentle soul exuded as much beauty as his subjects as he’d sit quietly sketching and observing . There was always something ....just peaceful . What a kind testimony.
If you were at Farnham at that time, you quite possibly were also taught by my mother, Lorna Pillow (d. 2015). ☺
And I second what you say - Victor was a lovely man. I still exchange Christmas cards with his widow, Glenys. ♥
@@Bartok_J I do remember the name of your mother but I don't think she was one of my teachers. The student population was quite small at the time (about 125) but there were many different departments - fine arts, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and photography. What did she teach? I am leaning towards textile design and printing but I am nowhere near certain.
Yes, Victor was indeed a lovely man. How nice, though, that you still exchange Christmas cards with Glenys!
While he may be gone. As an artist he has achieved immortality. His works will live on and remind us of him.🙏🏻
Always enjoyed his artistic renditions of the archeology digs. His bringing the past alive was very much a big part of the show.
Remarkable as he was so persecuted and harmed from his former country of origin. A gentleman & fabulous artist that enlightened us in how the past would of looked. Such realism and such a gentle-man worthy of deep respect.
@@ledacedar6253 Thank you!!
His drawing of the young woman with the platted hair in "finds on the fairway" was beautiful.
Victor blew my mind every single episode with the amazing detail of his drawing and his ability to visualize another time and get all the historical accuracy perfect. He seemed like such a humble guy. RIP Victor ❤️
RIP Victor. A fantastic imagination that will be sorely missed.
I second that, RIP
Lovely tribute - I remember his drawing of Mick and Tony at the Roman bath house !
What a wonderful man! My condolences to his family & friends - I really noticed when Victor no longer was the illustrator for Time Team's vignettes. It really took away a lot, when his art was not in the program.
I'm a sculptor.. I've always wished I could sketch out my subjects like Victor could.. What life he put into his drawings.. just so amazing.. The world is a bit less today.. without Victor Ambrus.. It truly is..
Whoa!! I discovered the show during the lockdown. Every member of the original team is a national treasure. RIP, Victor
My childhood reading was enhanced by the marvellous illustrations of Victor Ambrus.
Seeing him on Time Team was a delight.
He probably forgot more of art than any of us will ever know in a lifetime. Cheers Victor.
He was so good, I commissioned 3 paintings of seascapes from Victor . The last one arrived while I was traveling and to my father's great pride and surprise, he told me (and he keeps telling people :- ) ) that he had actually talked to Victor when he had phoned him to ask if the picture had arrived. My father, like me, is a devoted Time Team fan. Once again, thank you Victor, your name, like your art, lives on.
When I was 8 I met Victor on a time team dig. My dad pulled me out of school for a week to help out on the dig as part of a young archeologists club in the local area. When I met Victor I showed him some drawings I'd done on the site and I can remember him being very positive and he gave me some words of encouragement and signed a drawing for me. I later went to art school and now I paint frequently. A great inspiration, and from watching this video, a great man.
That's a wonderful share. Thank you. ^-^
Thank you for sharing your story, you have a wonderful memory of a great experience.
Wow.. how cool to have been involved on a Time Team dig! Awesome 👌
Victor's illustrations were always a highlight of each Time Team episode, he had a great ability to take you back into a scene.
brought history to life, RIP Victor Ambrus
RIP Victor. Your illustrations made each dig real. Thank you
Brilliant tribute to a marvelous man. Thank you Tim.
What a huge repertoire of historical research he had in his head he was able to transfer to art
A lovely gentleman who will be sadly missed.
This hurts my heart to learn of Victor’s passing. I always felt that he was an under appreciated but absolutely integral member of Time Team. I loved his work so much and I think he was a truly wonderful human being that deserves a lot of praise. ❤️😔
So nice to hear everyone's stories about the quietest member of the team. I look forward to an exhibition of his work sometime in the not too distant future, that would be lovely.
Please? Especially if it can be virtual for us Yanks?
@@claymonsterpottery : As a fellow Yank, I wholeheartedly concur.
Also from a non yank. Aussie here who adored his ability and was glad to hear he was as nice as I thought he was.RIP Victor.
Victor was always a favourite part of my Time Team viewing, he brought such a lot to the programme.
Condolences to his family and the "Team".
Oh my word, this is so sad. So many happy memories of watching Time Team and enjoying Victor’s art. Rest in peace.
Or the mouse on all of those railway engines!
I remember when & now I can't believe it's already been 2 years. I know you all are missing him. He was a joy to watch.
This broke my heart. Victor and the time team . I never missed a show. Still watch them. Over and over. The stories.... The pictures placed with shows still have me asking, " were my ancestors there"? I'm Welch and I love it!!!! Blessings and healing light to the Time Team, see you on our next journey Victor ❤️🙏
Mathematically it's extremely likely they were there.
It's even likely my ancestors were there too, and I'm an American.
We humans are factually all family, if one goes back far enough.
God Bless Victor.
Very sad news. RIP Victor Ambrus. His wonderful drawings were an integral part of the show and it was always great to see the final scene he’d sketched after many iterations during the dig.
I hope he and Mick are talking about the latest digs and Victor is drawing still. R I P you wonderful artist.
Don't forget about Ian and Robin, they're up there two sharing a drink with an old friend they've been reunited with
I remember seeing so much of Victor's work long before I ever became familiar with Time Team. His was the definitive look of historical Celtic and pre-historic interpretations. What a tremendous talent. Sincere condolences to all his friends, family and associates.
Rip Victor. A very talented man with great vision.
His pictures were always dynamic and suggestive, where CGI is certain and 'perfect'
As a Time Team addict ,Victor's illustrations brought history to life ,He was a wonderful Artist with infinite patience when a site because of new discovery changed the reality of a partially sketched picture he would listen and start over or change the picture. He will be sorely missed RIP Victor I'm sure your' e painting angels now..
Another great man gone but his legacy still lives on. Victor Ambrus' Time Team illustrations brought the past to life in ways computer graphics can never hope. My condolences to his family and friends.
His style was wonderful, and perfect for the show. I was always jealous that he had the job I wanted, but he totally deserved his place on Time Team.
Good night, Victor.
RIP Victor - he added such a wonderful dimension to the show. He seemed like a talented gentle soul.
RIP Victor,such a talent.
sniff ,sniff I am crying for the family, he will be greatly missed, nice to see (everyone) and there was always a dog in the picture
Victor was a gentleman magician with his talents. I am typing through tears.
Such a talented individual with an incredible life story.
He will be very much missed.
R.I.P, Victor!
I'm so sad about Victor's passing. He was such a wonderful illustrator, very talented and artful. I really loved his sweet, quiet demeanor. He will be sorely missed. R.I.P. Victor Ambrus.
Victor was such a multi-talented artist, always adding to the team's discoveries and understanding with detailed drawings. I was surprised when he etched a design on blown glass or helped create a medal - wonderful to see these additional talents of his. Every major archeological team needs its own Victor!
yes, a brilliant illustrator and he could turn his hand to many other forms and techniques..
I grew up with books full of Victor Ambrus' work, and my kids grew up with them too. We were really excited to recognise his drawings back when Time Team started. He's been a part of our lives forever. So sad he's gone, wonderful to hear he was as lovely as his artwork. He brought history to life for us.
As a professional librarian, I became familiar with his work in juvenile books. His art is unique, genuine, and honest--a style that just doesn't get enough appreciation.
So sad to hear of his passing!
His dog is like the Usborne duck! And look at that penmanship!
His attention to detail is what made me excited to see each of his finished drawings at the end of each episode.
RIP Victor. He was such a talented member of Time Team.
Move on from this life in peace, Victor. May you live on eternally in the hearts of your many fans. You brought great beauty to this world and the past. Be proud.
Victor's art was always amazing. Great detail, and such a talent for making the past look alive.
As an artist and a lover of history and an avid watcher of time team...i for one always looked forward to seeing victors unique style of how it looked on every dig...an inspiration to many artists im sure,RIP sir victor..x.
RIP Victor, you will be missed...
God bless him. His sketches were always wonderful and brought the sites to life.
Victor was a fabulous artist. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. RIP and you will be missed😢
He made the people live again and allowed us to connect to them across the centuries.
There goes a great man and gifted artist. He will not be forgotten
Wonderful memories of a wonderful and talented man. RIP VIctor ❤️
Truly a legend. I only knew of his work with Time Team, apparently that just barely scratched the surface.
His artwork was outstanding. Hopefully a book or website will be put together to display all the magnificent drawing he created. He was one piece of the puzzle that made Time Team enjoyable to watch over and over. RIP Victor. :(
More than just a talented artist but also the success behind Time Team. His visualisations gave the viewers the ability to feel connected to the archeology. A gentleman and a scholar.
Thanks for sharing this. He was such a wonderful, humble man.
His work added so much to the show, enabled me to visualize what the archeologist could see in their minds eye... thank you for celebrating Victor
R.I.P. Victor. A true artist. He will be drawing with Mic up above.
Your so right! Brought tears to my eyes!
I've been rewatching all the time team programmes, (and just bought the mug and pen). One thing I've noticed is you can see the remains, the foundations, of buildings in trenches, you can see the small finds. Bits of pot, flint, bones etcetera, but even for someone whose been in archaeology for decades like Mr Harding I suspect it's difficult to really picture what something really looked like. Victor solved that problem for all of us, he brought everything to life through his drawings,
Skilled artist, will be missed
I can rewatch this tribute again and again.. wonderful Victor Ambrus, thanx Tim
The Time Team Quiet Man was Victor. Working, legs crossed, almost casually in the background. It always seemed to me that he was on holiday😉. R.I.P. sir.
In early 2021 I purchased several of Victors books and some Time Team books as well. Highly treasured
Victor's artwork is among my most prominent memories of Time Team as a kid, and after learning how to draw, trying to recreate that magic was one of the first things I set out to do, but it is much harder than I thought. I have great respect for his talent and I hope his work continues to inspire a new generation to bring us face-to-face with people from ages past.
A great life story, such a talented man R.I.P. Victor.
I've always loved Victor's illustrations through out the years of watching Time team, how he always managed to in vision a scene from a few finds and some muddy trenches and bring it to life was truly remarkable. Rest in peace Victor.
If someone says about you when you're gone: _"You lived a good life"_ that is the greatest measure of success.
RIP Victor. You had magical hands that created the most amazing picture for us to enjoy. I really loved to see you at work 💫 Thank you for your kind words Tim and Tony and TimeTeam
El CID would not have awakened my world of illustrations without your incomparable creations. You are missed and will always be treasured.😔
He brought the past to life on Time Team.My condolences to the team and his family
He brought the whole thing to life …Loved his work and incredible talent. Vale Victor
Victor was an integral and vital part of Time Team. He had the great gift of bringing to life the often transitory information from the rest of the team, illustrating scenarios that are alive with an immediate vibrancy, capturing detailed nuances of the figures and buildings. It consolidated, beautifully, the gathered discoveries of the site in a form that was intantly understood by all. So talented. My sympathies to his family and friends.
RiP Victor. You’ve left the world a wonderful legacy. Thank you.
So sad to hear of his passing! What a full and accomplished life he led. He will be missed but always fondly remembered through his art and Time Team.
I loved watching him draw, paint and sculpt throughout the years of Time Team!! RIP and praying for peace and comfort for his family.
A wonderful window into the PAST. I would like to see a nice glossy coffee table book of Victor's time team artwork. I would buy it, Bless you Victor RIP 💞
I've only discovered Time Team and Victor in the last few months, but I'm still so deeply touched by everyone's remembrances of him.
I loved seeing his illustrations on Time team, rest in peace Victor.
A wonderful talent and man. RIP Victor! Thank you!
What a wonderful tribute to a man who was so instrumental to Time Team. I am so happy we got to hear Victor talk about drawing and to learn more about him.
Oh my god! When those Viking images started rolling across the screen, I nearly fell out of my seat! I can remember having that book as a kid and that very book is what made me hungry to learn about history. Rest in peace Victor. You were truly inspirational.
I’ve always felt that Victor had a gift for channeling the energies of the past through his artwork so much so that it’s as a whimsical photograph.
Peace be with you Victor. We love You and all your wonderful friends from the Time Team. Thank You .
Many thanks Victor. You helped with my imagination, and understanding of British history. Rest well Victor.
Sad news. Time Team was exactly what it said, a Team. Victor was just as important as anybody else. Brilliant artist, thank you Victor. X
Victor was an artistic genius.. his ability to sit in a muddy windy, rain swept field and produce astounding artwork, is testament to his incredible skill. You can get a sense of who someone is seeing them regularly on a show like Time Team, and these descriptions of Victor by the team themselves just confirms he was a gentleman too. A sad, sad loss. RIP Victor, Michael and Robin. 🥲
Such a remarkable artist. Victor's illustrations for Bernard Miles' Favourite Tales From Shakespeare got me hooked on the Bard at an early age -- they're still in my mind whenever I read those plays, decades later. What a gift he had, and what a gift he was to all of us whose imaginations have been fired by his work. My heart goes out to all who were so lucky as to have known him.
Thank you Mick for this tribute to Victor. He was a great artist, even more than that his insight and imagination could recreate a world that is long passed. The archaelogists on Time Team revealed finds and the world as we can see it today. Victor took us into the world as it was hundreds of years gone. Great talent, sadly missed
Victor was integral to Time Team and part, I am sure, of many of our collective happy memories. Isn't it wonderful that one creative man can have such a positive impact on our nation's consciousness.
Love Victor, and RIP Mr Ambrus. Your art work will be with us forever.
Victor Ambrus, an artist extraordinaire, an historian and a nice man. Stay safe in the arms of your God Victor, you will be missed.
A wonderful talent at bringing history to life through his art, R.I.P Victor
My heart goes out to Victor's family and co-workers.
A brilliant man and I loved his intuitive work. He made the past come alive
