- We have some extra strawberry plants so decided on using some grow bags we had to make a new grow system using the wood we cut on the Woodmizer.

Thank you for your time.
My pleasure! thank you for watching and supporting the channel
You have keen eyes, saw that runner propping out, great,
Watching all your videos , getting ideas
Thank you 🙏🙏
Awesome! Thank you!
Inspiring 😊
Always Fun
I love it😍😍
I use those same grow bags from Crop King for my outdoor hydroponic strawberries. I can concur 5 plants per side and I put use drippers just like the tomato bato buckets with 3-4 per grow bag. I use Crop Kings leafy formula with Potasium nitrate added for fruiting, works great.
Awesome!!!
I’m new to hydro fruit and I’m trying to find out what to feed strawberries and fruits using Masterblend; someone recommended adding Cal-Mag (calcium and magnesium for fruit plant growth); is this similar to yours ? Masterblend is an NPK; I’m just not sure what fertilizer to buy to add to
it ……
WOW LOOKS GORGEOUS!! I can’t believe how fast your strawberries are growing!! You sure make it look easy!! (I know different!!! As a newbie, I don’t have all the fancy equipment or a beautiful high tunnel or drip lines or anything like that but I have a passion for growing my own food in my own apartment and I have 25 strawberry crowns that I purchased from a company from PEI and they began pretty great but then the outer edges of the leaves turned brown and they are showing they aren’t real happy and it could be because the feet are staying too wet and as you mentioned strawberries don’t like wet feet I thought if they could be grown in an NFT system then they would enjoy wet feet but I have to admit my NFT system isn’t a true Nutrient film technique, mine is more of a quarter of the pipe is filled with water at all times even though the water is constantly moving and I did that on purpose because if the pump fails at any time the pipes will still have enough water in them to sustain the plants for a little while. That doesn’t sound great for the strawberries so I think I’m going to switch it up and I do have some thin tubing and I could push water through it and I have some slightly smaller tubing that I have these interesting ends that I can put on them to regulate the flow out of each end I may start using that to water the strawberries
sounds like that would work. we did do our strawberries in NFT one season, and you are right we had to knock down the water flow... we ended up using drip emitters 1.5 gpm and that seemed to do the trick. One tip is that strawberries like to be held tight in the growing medium so when you put your crowns in the rock wool or net cup make sure they are packed in...
@@HomegrownPassion great advice and yes that’s what those things are called emitters to me they are like black little stakes with a red cap on top that you can turn to the amount of water that you want to drip out, I also have the kind that goes into the small tubing and have the same type of end caps to control the flow. Looks like I’ve lost all but one of my strawberry plants that I had put in the window boxes but the ones in the 5 gallon buckets are still surviving but definitely not thriving.
Morning Katie, Great catch and fix on the strawberries :) It might be a fun test on the grow bags or next year , to try 4 ( or even 5 -6) plants per container slightly off set. just to see if the combo would give the same or better yield. A couple of turkey thermometers in the black and white containers , might show any temperature difference . THe elevated plant frames ( home grown ) and grow bags are a great bonus use of greenhouse space. I know you are all ready set up at the farmers market this early morning. With plenty of great eats and flower baskets for your appreciative community. Happy you all had some family time . Never enough of that !!! Did you mention the type of and name of the tomatoes ? With so many more folks growing and canning , that might make for a nice kitchen series by Doug ? :) Everyone loves a great recipe to surprise their taste buds. Has Doug , with all the fire wood cutting ever considered growing mushrooms in the left over 3-4 " upper branches . Yields can often go 3-5 years . Thank you for your continued contributions , love of growing and real life moments on your farm . Every day is something different.
Doug has never thought about mushrooms. he does love them all kinds so that would be something interesting to look into too. good ideas on the thermometers going to have to see if there is a big difference. Doug would love to do a kitchen series, but he said he doesn't think anyone would be interested. I will get him to do something.
@@HomegrownPassion here is a little different bag growing approach . ua-cam.com/video/_cvtS-ck0oA/v-deo.html&ab_channel=VolunteerGardener
@@HomegrownPassion have doug check out greg judy ( you tube beef farmer) his approach for log system mushrooms. ua-cam.com/channels/i8jM5w49UezskDWBGyKq5g.htmlsearch?query=mushrooms
I have read that some pvc can leach into plant and is not recommended to use rain gutters for nft. I know your channels are food grade but what about the return tubing is that just standard pvc piping. Thanks love your channel.
so the PVC is rated for food grade. All white PVC is... never heard of it not being food grade. Where did you read this????
Real nice flock of strawberries you have there Katy! But how many of those delicious berries do you just have to bite in half to test for ripening control? lol Going to be interesting to compare the bato buckets to the long logs as growing medium too. Happy Growing! -Bob...
Hi Bob, I ate to many... Will be picking tomorrow and Monday for the family and everything else goes to the farm market.
Another great video with brilliant content. When you cut off the Strawberry runners do you toss them in the compost or regrow them ??
we tried growing them but found out they have to stay connected to the mother plant until they root. We were told we could use a rooting inoculant so will look into that. Would be nice to double our plants without buying
@@HomegrownPassion I've seen them root successfully in the 10x20 trays with a humidity dome / misting system. Using the mother end of the runner stabbed into the dirt to help with stability. I'm hoping to do a video on it later this season.
That’s crazy that normal to be that big already? Seems to me that was pertty quick 🤷♂️ strain and or hydro love? Irregardless looking tasty👍 …
i think its hydro love. All the plants we grow love it and grow fast with the perfect conditions and nutriention.
Hello and thank you for video.could you do a follow up to let us know how the grow bags worked?
Will do!
Zip ties are really cheap to seal ends. Plants look gorgeous.
thanks zip ties would work great as well
Do you have a video on how those bato buckets work? I was thinking of using cococoir slabs to grow the berries and use aquaponics instead of hydroponics as I run a fish farm. But not much information out there.
yes, I think we did a couple from last year showing them working and this year Doug setting them up
Have you ever measured yield-per-plant difference in pruned and not prunes tomato plants?
no that would be interesting to know but don't have the time.... maybe next year we can try it
I have coco fibre that I picked up for free it's been used for tomatoes but was thinking about doing the same with strawberries is your drain to wast?
yes drain to waste...really is the simplest and easiest to do
Where do you buy those buckets? Do you have a video about the build and use of the strawberry buckets?
Yep, the strawberry buckets were purchased from CropKing. If you call let them know we sent you and they will take great care of you. They are not listed on the website.... have to call here is a link to our video and one from friends down in TN who also use this system and have entire high tunnel dedicated to strawberry's. ua-cam.com/video/wd_F0gKO4go/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/MYHthKX6j-g/v-deo.html friends' video ua-cam.com/video/YacmjU6qP1I/v-deo.html
How often and for how long do you water the strawberries for? Curious. Im in TX starting a small home hydro garden for strawberries.
the time in the summer is 4 times a day at 35 minutes
Where do you get your beto buckets for your strawberries and tomatoes, your nft rails for your system and bulk vermiculite/perlite. I'm thinking on starting a commercial green house. Thanks.
the buckets and nft channels were purchased from CropKing. The perlite and vermiculite we source from a number of local vendors depending on price.
@@HomegrownPassion Due to living in Alaska and basically everything being shipped in... I would love to know who you get especially your vermiculite from, it would give me ideas where to start at least looking for some... When I google it I can only find little bags of it and not the 4 cu yrds... We have perlite locally, at the beg of the summer there was give or take 600 bags and now there is about 250 avail... Thanks for your help on this matter and the other info... I am looking at the cost of getting set up including the green houses due to needing to have a loan for the set up and first yr operations... I am trying to figure costs...Thanks for all your help.
Very nice! Where do you find those buckets? I can't seem to find them anywhere.
Hi Tom, those were purchased from CropKing. They are not listed on their website you have to call. Let them know we sent you and they will take great care of you!
@@HomegrownPassion Thanks!
can you do the strawberry bags for peppers, tomatoes carrots and other with a watering system
I'm sure you can we have used grow bags for peppers and tomatoes
What variety are your strawberries? Thanks for your videos
Albion from Johnny Seeds
Where do you buy the grow bags and bato buckets?
Grow bags the same place. CropKing
did you still you perlite vermiculite mixture? i saw video 1 year ago. and continue see strawberry video. the soil looks different from previous...
this year we did soil in the bato buckets to see a comparison. the bags have the perlite mix. Either way it seems the strawberries are growing great.
@@HomegrownPassion okay really looking foward for new update.
Do you have a source that you would share for those long grow bags?
no not yet we got them a year or so ago and need to find the source
whats catching the water out of the buckets
Nothing we are just draining to ground. We may build a gutter system this year for them
What is the nutrient solution formulation you are using for the strawberries?
So, it's based off our source water. Everyone asks for it but it won't work because everyone's water is different. If you get your source water tested (very cheap) a horticulturist can build a recipe for you.
Do you think this would work with blue lake bush bean's? Let them hang over the sides ,,, Sure would save the back..
i do think they would work. we are going to be planting some new bean varieties here this fall for trial
Where do you get the bato buckets?
Those are from CropKing. You have to call them because they are not listed on the web site. If you do let them know we sent you and they will take great care of you.
Where did you get the bags you are using for your strawberries ?
the grow bags were purchased from CropKing
Wasn't this your daughters channel before? Did she stop and you took over?
Can you please tell me the fertilizers that you use for strawberries? Thank you
yes will upload
@@HomegrownPassion thank you so much. I’m not advanced like you guys. I just want to grow a few plants in a perlite and potting soil mix in plastic pots with drip irrigation. Thank you
5:30 the perlite is very dry. please wear a mask when handling or wet the perlite before use
ok thanks
Was wondering if there was any difference between black bs white containers. Can’t really think why….white would reflect any heat from sun and black absorb. Wouldn’t think strawberry’s like warmer growing medium. Thanks for sharing!
not sure yet if there is any difference but we are going to watch and see if we get any difference in production.
I wonder if you have a group , class .. that you mentor or teach . I’m interested to learn from you
Yes, I speak the CropKing's grower school each month. Look them us and sign up for the class. Its great
@@HomegrownPassion will do , thank you !
It look s like those ash planks will sag unless you give them more support.
yeah, a little but I'm not worried. they just hold up the bags and they seem to be doing ok...remember this is an experiment. just want to see if this kind of system will work and is viable.
I’m very confused. My hydroponic strawberries grow in tubs of water. These are all growing in soil, that you water. Like grow bags or raised beds.
we grow them in perlite using nutrient water so hydroponic.
