Finally! I made the poppy lamp when I was pregnant with my daughter. She's 27 now. during her terrible twos she got frustrated accidently kicking the lamp to the floor knocking the cap off. So it's been on Mt shelf waiting for 24 years! I hate repairs. In the studio I was the repair girl many years ago. You've inspired me...I'm ready. 71 now and I'm teaching my daughter and a 21 year old friend the basics. I've also started on my water Lilly lamp. I prefer lead came over copper foil. Now I have 2 young ladies that love copper foiling and have offered to foil my pieces!😢
Fantastic, I encourage students to do repairs right away.. 25 years is a significant cooling off period.
Tiffany Lamp Crown Repair - Excellent
Thanks, I don't really do many repairs anymore. They are full of headaches and when you get done you haven't really created anything that great.
Super demo. Thank you so much.
Thanks for watching!
Loved the video and how you adapted and weren't afraid to change things to make it better.
I'm doing another similar repair now and I'm sure I'll adapt as the repair goes along!
Thank you for making this video ❤ i am going to be fixing my mom's lamps
I'm doing another one. I just got the right sized vent cap
Great video. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. It was very informative but I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. I see you used a sand blasting thing to clean it up for soldering. In lieu of a sandblaster, do you think I would be able to use a Dremel with the wire wheel? The next question is what type solder do you use? Is it Rosin core or acid core and also can you brush acid on the surface to clean it before soldering? As a final note, the lamp shade I have is different than the one you worked on. Yours is a round, dome shape and the one I am working on has a series of triangular glass panes. Also it has an upper part (chimney?) soldered to the lower section. The solder at that joint weakened and from the weight of the lamp caused it to separate. To prevent it from totally separating I used a piece of mechanics wire to hold it until I decide what to do with it. Thanks again.
A Dremel can work, also an air eraser like they sell at harbor freight. You could also take it to a local machine shop to have it blasted. We NEVER use Acid or rosin core solder with stained glass because the imbedded flux can seep under the solder and then will ooze out forever and glass won't get clean. We use liquid flux.
I was given a large stain glass lamp. Someone had used bulbs too hot and it’s had started separating. I have it upside down in a box lid. How can I easily fix it
You'll have to resolder it which is never easy. Get the glass in place as good as you can. When you get done you'll understand why we no loger do lamp shade repairs.
I really appreciate this video. My question, I have a lamp repair where the lamp has a crown on top, it originally hung from the ceiling, and it has a flat metal cross bar (not a spider)....how do you solder the cross bar back on? It looks like each bar is an inch across by 1/8th inch thick by 7-8 inches long. Was wondering how to reinforce that so it can hang. Thank you 😊
If you could send a couple photos to me it would help. My email is david.gsglass@gmail.com I look forward to helping out 🙂
I just broke my glass lamp while playing the song 'Persistent Vision' by the Dischord Records band, Rites Of Spring. My guitar headstock collided with the glass, shattering instantly.
Hope you continue to enjoy the music! I often find Led Zeppelin to be a great soundtrack to stained glass!
@@GommStainedGlass Led Zeppelin is killer! Favorite album: Houses Of The Holy :)
I have never done anything like this and I need to fix a heat cap on a stained glass shade. Can a beginner do this?
If you are good at 3D soldering then you can probably do it. Otherwise, do a few 3D projects to get your skills up..the other thing is to use a small wire brush or steel wool on the places to be soldered so the solder will stick.
Sooo??.....the wider heat cap that was placed underneath....couldnt have been put on top instead of the octogonal type one??...and another type of support to attach underneath?
The wider one held all the glass perfectly but I couldn't have put it on top because the shape wasn't right. Good idea though!
