- My mother was a primary school teacher and I went to the school she taught at for the first year of my schooling career. Kama primary in Kwazakhele township. She was so well respected by staff and kids alike because she was kind. Firm ... but always genuinely kind and caring.
I have had teachers like this and they REALLY stand out! They make all the difference in a kid's life because lets face it ... childhood is often so confusing! Our impulses as children are often shut down or made to be wrong, creativity can often be stifled and !worst! who we are at our core can often be called into question. So when myself and Aron Ha'Levi were commissioned by Standard Bank through Shikaya Learning Trust to write a song celebrating those special teachers that go the extra mile we jumped at the chance. We went into several staff rooms all over the Western Cape and surprised teachers with a live rendition of the song as a gift. It was frikkin awesome! I'll never forget the appreciation and warmth of these teacher to whom we were expressing true appreciation. We captured some of their responses here. Thank you to all the teachers who care.

This song just took me back and brought me to tears...and remembered When my Grade 12 English class teacher told me in 1993 that I was destined for greatness, to fly higher than the skies and to stay forever young cos that was her favorite song too😂, i never understood what she ment until my life became exactly what i had envisioned for myself then it clicked and finally understood what she meant...see, I was an introvert child mainly cos i struggled academically and didnt realize what was causing my struggles then, cos i studied as much even twice a such...i was smart, talented and focused yet i lagged behind academically and that kind of chipped me a bit but i never gave up cos my teacher and my mom saw something in me that i never was able to figure out and that was ambidextrous dyslexia that i had which basically means i was able to diminantly use both hands equally yet read backwards accurately, i thought i was handicapped, something was wrong with me, not realizing i was actually gifted and i was an extraordinary smart person who just struggled to articulate normally but i didnt let it define me, over the years ive been able to function with it and beat it dramatically...looking back also i was actually a popular introvert in high school but didn't understand how was that even possible, but i guess people saw greatness within me, in restrospect, it was a blessing in disguise for me cos had i known and realized that i probably would have been an arrogant prick like some people i know 😂had turned out to be... Today, i live in New York, i travel the world and im a medical Doctor in America...so to To Mrs Raven out there from Pinetown Girls high school class of 1993...Thank u and a big thank u to my Mom also whom i love dearly from eMlazi. This song is just so appropriate to many of us who have beat the odds... Thank u Zolani... Beautiful song
