Scaling down can often lead to many more small redfin, and the bigger ones will still be caught regularly. Just have to decide whether you want to bother with the small fellas.
@@Gavs_rc_hobbies I feel the same way. I have a small 1.5 kg setup just for flicking small lures for small reddies :) Put out a carp bait on my 4 kilo rod and flick small lures on the other rod. Great fun, and you get enough bigger ones and yebblies as bycatch to keep it very entertaining.
Sounds awesome mate. My favourite setup for the really tiny redfin is a Strike Tiger nymph with the claws removed and sometimes I even break half a centimeter off the body to make it even smaller. 👍
@@robbiefishing Any time you want a change of pace, let me know. My parents live at Ulladulla on the South Coast, and they have a couple of spare rooms... Of course, it is a bit flooded around there at the moment, at least the floods helped to quell the fires a bit lol.
LOL Phillip, Ive just watched and I'm not sure what you're talking about. Hahaha There was a lady swimming laps of the lake as I was leaving, I thought maybe you might have seen her in tjebba aground but I can't see her. LOL
THere are a lot of variables, such as what are you fishing for, what are you fishing with, where are you fishing (lake, stream, river, sea, clear, wooded, weedy) and what budget are you looking at? Work these out, and go to the tackle shop armed with this information as it greatly affect the rod you get, and your success and enjoyment from that kit. Just as a general guide, something in about the 3-5 kg rage, with a 2000 size reel and 4 kg line will get you among Perch, Yebblies and carp quite well, a 5-8 kilo medium action rod with a 3000 reel will suit most small - medium cod requirements and large medium, small large lures. A 10 kg rod and line will get you into the beginner levels of the big girls. The main thing is to match the rod with the line and reel, so the kit is well balanced. You will break line if you put light line on a heavy rod, and you will break rods if you put heavy line on a light rod. Get what suits the application. You cannot throw a 100 gram lure effectively on a 4 kg rod, likewise on a 10 kg rod you won't be throwing 1/8th ounce jigheads.
My Dad landed a 47cm Yellowbelly at the opposite end of the lake to the caravan park last Friday just as the storms hit. Not sure if that is a rare catch or not.

@@robbiefishing Yep, redfin are the main fodder fish for the Yebbly and Cod in Lake Burley Griffin. Small reddies and carp make up the vast bulk of their diet. That is the reason we get fast growth rates on the natives, and the fishery never overstocks on any one species despite being a relatively small closed system. Carp have reached a balance with natives in the local region and it is not unusual to get a cod with a fair sized carp in its gob. That is why I have no problem releasing reddies and carp. The flocks of cormorants and pelicans that feed on them are also to be considered, along with the fact that removing a couple of fish in a session is going to have no impact.
