How to Grow Bush Beans: 30+ Plants in One Vertical Tower!

  • Bush beans are my favorite style of bean due to the versatility you have in how you choose to grow them. They also work well in small apartment or urban gardens as you can cram a ton of green beans in a vertical system, or even grow them in containers.
    As we continue in our gardening for beginners videos, I think learning how to grow beans is a great foray into a more 'complex' plant than leafy greens or herbs, but without upping the difficulty too much.

      Beans pull nitrogen from the air dude... they can get it from the ground but it's not as good for the soil health.

      The tower... rotate your pots from bottom to top regularly to keep nitrogen draining into the top of the tower

    My dad was an organic gardener his whole life. No matter where we lived we had a garden and a freezer full of vegetables for the winter. One of the things he taught me was to plant a second batch of beans 2 weeks after planting the first batch. Especially if the garden was tiny. Thanks for your videos.

  • @toddmain
    @toddmain 3 місяці тому +4

    The beauty of the greenstalk is that you can just reorder the layers, so you could rotate the bottom level up to the top and vice-versa, and in theory those soluble nutrients will wash back down and re-equalize. It won't be perfect, as the original bottom plants have already absorbed a lot, but I've had success with this approach. I've also noticed that, despite the great design, greenstalks tend to starve the lower levels of water. I suspect that the weep holes just start getting clogged. So, I tend to rotate everything every few weeks to just keep things more balanced, and it gives me a chance to wash out those watering trays. And if you rotate the tiers proactively, you tend to prevent the nutrient imbalance before it happens. (I do the first couple of rotations after only one week each, because a lot of the nutrient migration happens early.)
    Side note: I use letters and numbers for the pockets, so each tier gets a letter and each pocket gets a number, so A1-6, B1-6, etc. Makes it easier if I want to keep a log and/or manage the succession planting of greens. I just write the numbers on the outside of each pocket with a permanent marker.

    PSA: Some commenters are correct in that beans are legumes and thus fix nitrogen with Rhizobium bacteria, so it's important not to OVER-fert with nitrogen. But this is also quite a unique way to grow beans vs. how they are normally grown, which is why I recommended adding some balanced organic fertilizer that containers nitrogen AND other nutrients.

    Suggestion for all the nutrients going to the bottom layers, couldn't you just disassemble the layers and put top trays on bottom and bottom ones on top? I also heard when they look like they are done producing, cut the plant way back to one little sprig with 2-3 leaves and it will regrow into new producing plant. It has an established root system.

      I soaked mine for 12 hours (overnight) then laid them on a damp paper towel in a ziploc bag til 1/2 inch of root showed. Then put them in the seed starter tray 1" deep. I've had 42 successes this month and had 3 beans that didnt continue. I did throw away 12 seeds that either showed no sign of germination or that began to rot from being in the paper towel too long (I tried for inch long roots instead of being happy with 1/2 inch). Let me know if you try it and whether it worked or not
