In this morethanyoucaretosee episode, I dip my toe into, learning how to shoot ilford HP5 black and white photography. This was my first time shooting this film. For whatever reason, I’ve anyways been a little nervous to shoot black and white. I’m not always sure I’m going to get the results I want. And I respect a lot of talented photographers like Fan Ho who shot black and white. There so much to learn about being able to control the tones of the image, using colored filters, pushing and pulling your film. This really put me out of my comfort zone, I just feel so much more comfortable with color films such as Kodak’s Portra 400. The first roll i shot at box speed, and my second roll I pushed one stop. NOTE: Not all these shots were taken chronologically. I mixed it up with some portraits and landscapes.
I also talk about knowing your rights as a photographer and the importance of knowing the rights to your photos. Note: each state or country may have different laws. So know your rights.
I developed the Ilford film at home with Cinestill’s DF96 single step developer and fix. Super easy and would recommend it if you are wanting to just start with black and white photography. I scanned my negatives with my Epson V650 and converted my negatives with Negative Lab Pro in Lightroom.
This week I plan to keep shooting some Ilford Film such as Ilford XP2 400
Ilford Delta 3200 and Ilford PANF Plus 50
You handled that security guy perfectly. So glad you stood your ground and didn’t let you get your rights violated. He was in the wrong... no law was broken... you had more to fear from him than the other way around and you dealt with it exactly right.
If the run-in with the security guard occurred in the United States and if you did not commit a felony in his presence, the security guard has no powers of arrest in regards to you, and he cannot detain you. In fact, you don't even need to talk with him. He is not a law enforcement officer.
exactly the same happened to me last weekend in Germany. Annoying security guard approaching me agressively. I thought i might explain to him what i´m doing and it will be fine, but it wasn´t. I would have been okay with it, if he explained to me that he might get in trouble for it, i would respect that. He was just annoying as hell, and so for me the moment was destroyed completely and a nice afternoon shoot with an approaching thunderstorm just became ugly.
oh yeha and he explained to me that "he is police right now" which i denied of course.
I've gotten in so much trouble taking photos, lol.
Man. That's just beautiful. That atmosphere you made its fantastic.
Nice video as always. Really liked the random portrait session, that was too perfect.
Thank you! Yes. Usually when I see people when I go to shoot, it’s a negative thing, but I tried to turn this into a positive and make her apart of the scenery.
I just bought my first roll of HP5 and this was a great video to help me understand this film. Thank you ❤️
Wow. That means a lot to me. 😇
Whoa, I just came here to see if the film stock was decent, and left with a whole load of creative inspiration for film photography, video, youtube content creation. Thank you ✌🏼
Good video on so many levels. I'm 75 years old and started shooting B&W in the 50's. What makes a color photo great is what makes a B&W photo great. Color is just more information.
dude, you really earned my subscription at 3rd minute of video ;) GREAT! Video format is perfect, truly. Music, post-narration, color grading and awesome matching ;) I wish you to never stop what you doing, you deserve A LOT ! Great job :)
Thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time to write this! I need to get back on my grind.
Well, I just subscribed! That was an awesome video! I like the message at the end and I love that spontaneous shoot with the girl by the bridge!
Thank you! Welcome to the channel! And thank you for commenting!
This is a great video!! Love the almost Twin Peaks kind of vibes it gives off :)
Great video and how cool to meet someone who was just into the vibe of the moment like you did with her.
Thank you! Yes. It was all amazing timing.
Everything in the video is so beautiful thank you for sharing!
Thank you for your support!
Two videos and you've captured another subscriber. It's one thing when i see a nice photo and think to myself, wow, that's nice. It's special when I see a photo and it makes me feel something. Nice work. I can't wait to see more from you. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much! Just posted a new video!
i am also considering training my eyes for black and white. i don't think that way and am a bit intimidated by it. thanks for sharing your experience
Shooting some more today! Excited!
Wonderful photos and a great video too. The pictures of the girl at the bridge are gorgeous; the light was perfect there and she was a great model. New subscriber to your channel, looking forward to catching up on your videos and seeing more.
Welcome to the Channel, my film friend! I post videos when I can! I really appreciate your kind feedback!
I really love this! Fantastic spontaneous photoshoot with that lady. If that isn’t serendipity, I don’t know what is.
Thank you! I felt very lucky! 🍀
Those B&W's were crazyyyyy.... I just bought a roll and now i'm more than excited to use it. 👌
That’s awesome! Best of luck! Thank you for watching!
I love this one. Stunning photos ✨
Thanks Cait! Thanks for always supporting me videos! ❤️
Great video! My HP5 is on the way for my 6x6 cam, and My Nikon F4. The one time I was challenged, I stopped at an old cabin by the road. Right away I was surrounded by Police Officers. They asked me what I was doing, and I said I wanted a photo of that old cabin. they said that's great, just don't take a picture of the facility BEHIND you. It was a low security prison. I did not know. They were great guys and understood what I was doing. Just remember to look around where you are for situational awareness. Some places don't like photos. Cheers!
Oooh this was tight. Loved the moodiness
Ayeee. ⚡️⚡️ thanks
great video! extremely atmospheric
man, your photos are stunning!
Thank you! 🧡
Hermoso video, me llena de inspiración te ganaste un nuevo suscriptor.
Saludos de Orizaba, Veracruz México.
Y gracias por el consejo!
Spontaneity ❤️
always stand your legal ground.. i don't let anyone bother me while i shoot... stay you, and keep shooting!
Really dreamy shots. I'm trying to get used to shooting black and white through hp5 as well
Thanks! The humidity was super high! Natural Pro Mist.
@@morethanyoucaretosee Nice! I was actually curious about that, I thought you used a filter, but that's really great how it naturally worked out!
The Unrecorded Photographer so I usually always put a 1/8th pro mist on my lens for video, to cut down on the digital sharpness. So yes. But this video looks like 1/4 to 1/2 promist cause of the the humidity. Had to wipe my lens a few times.
What a genuinely beautiful video .
Loved this video man
Thanks Sam! ⚡️⚡️⚡️
I've been doing some research for an event I am filming the end of this month, I have been looking for weeks on the perfect B&W look for the film, I wanted to say thank you for showing me this type of film, wishing you the best
Thanks man! I hope I was able to help!
@@morethanyoucaretosee I am actually in process of filming today and tomorrow
Bro was just about to cry in that ending 😂 all good man thanks for looking out for photographers tho
These are FIREEEE🔥
Thank you!!! 🥳
what a beautiful place ❤
The shot at 4:47 looks like a matte painting in the background of a movie from like the '30s.
This feels like a short film. Great video!
Thank you, Luis!
beautiful
Love the vibe of this - always feel like I'm heading on an adventure when I load up my film camera!
I’ve been dying to get my hands on some fresh color 35mm! This film famine is killin me! But there’s always Ilford HP5!
I absolutely love the picture on 4:10, I love the dark colors that almost over powers the light. Was that you pushing your film by 1 stop or was that at box speed ?
From another comment he confirmed it was pushed one stop, definitely one of my favorite shots.
I have a survival bandana too! Where did you get yours? Also, incredible video.
Stole it from my brother 😂
Gorgeous shots! Did you shoot at box speed? I always get a flat look with hp5, the mood you captured with it is perfect.
There was a mix. Girl at the bridge was pushed one stop. And same for the water reservoir. Other shots were box speed
@@morethanyoucaretosee Lovely, good to know!
@@Stephie_L it’s been a while! Hard to remember. I talked about it in the description if I remember correctly! Shooting a video today!
wonderful video man
Thanks so much
what light meter is that?
by the way, those portraits of the lady are fantastic, remind me of one's done by a photographer named Rachel-brewster wright, in a video series by ilford on darkroom skills (selenium toning episode)- she used HP-5+, however, but the affect is simmilar.
nice pictures
Great video
Where is this taken?
Are you exposing for the shadows? Just curious how you achieved the contrast.
The high contrast shots were pushed a stop.
@@morethanyoucaretosee thanks for the response. I'm just getting back into film and have been shooting at box speed and developing at home. It has been a lot of trial and error so far to say the least.
It always is! I am wanting to do a comprehensive guide to C-41 processing and share all my tips. These black and white shots were done in Cinestill’s DF96
@@morethanyoucaretosee Dang. A mono bath huh. I thought of trying that out at first but then ended up with Rodinal and a fixer. This year has been my first at development at home. Impressive stuff for sure.
3:45 - what does that mean?
very nice video!!1
what camera setup are you using for video?
Black Magic 6k. Mainly rocking the sigma 18-35 as the glass. A lot of comments are saying I was using a lot of pro mist. It actually was so humid out that my lens was fogging from the rain. And the temperature difference coming in and out of my car, also made it look like that.
@@morethanyoucaretosee I also thought you were using a strong promist hahahaa, the image quality is amazing! Great setup! Can't wait to test som HP5 btw.
Cheers from Barcelona!
are you using the 90mm? Also where do you live, heaven?
South Carolina! 110mm and 65mm
Where was this? That place looks really cool
This is all shot in Upstate South Carolina. The bridge is called Poinsett Bridge.
Was the power plant governed by the Corp of Engineers?
My photos came out flat. Is that a problem with the camera or the scanner?
Overexpose, then, overexpose some more. HP5 can handle up to 6 stops of overexposure, it's insane.
what is the beautiful landscape?
pro mist on video camera?
so I usually always put a 1/8th pro mist on my lens for video, to cut down on the digital sharpness. So yes. But this video looks like 1/4 to 1/2 promist cause of the the humidity. Had to wipe my lens a few times.
@ 6:31 facts on facts
would like to work were are you in ca what camera
what camera is that
Had so many people talk smack and have an ego trip over trying to tell me “oh you can’t shoot here” you can’t take pictures here.” Mostly it’s just ignorant people who don’t know photographers rights. Never miss an opportunity to get a shot that you know is good!
to the security guy: "I'm sending these photos to Bin Laden."
Nathan Drake taking tick as photos ^^
Big Compliment
“Common sense”photography, as y’all like to say now! Know your rights 👍🏻
Haha, being British a roll of HP5 in the 1990s cost £5.....shot loads of it. I mostly shot it at 500'ish.. Back in the day your could just mail your film off with a hand written note saying, "I've pushed this negative to 3200, please develope as you think." Imaginge that, my local pharmacy/chemist and you could send a message as to how you wanted your film developed and printed!
I don’t think you put on enough diffusion.
Delish.
Thanks bro ⚡️
First
Ayeee. Legend.
The security guard is just doing his job too. There is an increased security risk at Nuclear power plants and photographs of the exterior can be seen as reconnaissance gathering.
Well read the patriot act.
Sure glad that they didn't call it "HPV"
360p squad anyone!?
Yep
Haha. So bad 😭😭😭 thanks guys!!! Really appreciate you watching my videos.
😡 security guards are not law enforcement 😡
You first mistake was pulling over for someone who wasn't law enforcement on a public road. If he was just a security guard I wouldn't have even pulled over. Security guard is not law enforcement. Just keep driving.
To be clear. He came down a one way road (the wrong way) and I was driving down it too (the right way)He pulled his car beside mine. I think you misheard, this happened at the power plant visitor’s center (where I had not taken any photos) which is not public property.
Just get on with it and use the film....stop being dramatic 😂
This is too hipster for me
😂😂😂
THE issue, is that you took a photo of a NUCLEAR power plant, and this could be construde as "reconnasance" , like in the MILLITARY, ie, before an airforce bomber takes flight (target photos!!!), or like taking photos inside a bank( to plan a robbery), or other public office (council/government building); remember 9/11??, THATS why people are 'scared' by this, what you should have done in hindsight, is go to the plant's visitors centre, and ASKED FIRST, or contact local council for a 'PERMIT' to do it.
I see a problem here. You are under the mistaken idea that you get obsessed with a certain type of film, instead of being obsessed with the art of photography......
Boring bla. bla.
