A Day of Photography in The Deep South
Follow Me On Instagram - morethanyoucaretosee?hl=en
In this episode, I explore my own backyard, The Deep South. I love driving the old country roads, with a camera on my passenger seat. Ready at any moment to pull over and take some photos. Going into open fields, walking trails, and stopping by orchards to pick up some fresh apple cider. I decided to shoot with my Mamiya RZ67 and a few rolls of Kodak’s Portra 800, which allows me to shoot closer to Golden Hour without the use of a tripod and a cable release, but as you know, those things still came to use in this episode. When I leave the house with Portra 800, it just gives me extra confidence that I won’t have to cut the day short, from lack of light. When I am forced to shoot a landscape at a shallow aperture, I feel like I’m wasting film.
I won’t lie, I love shooting up here, but recently I’ve been wanting to explore some new landscapes. I’m thinking about going deeper into North Carolina for the next video. I’m hoping to catch some of their fall colors before all the leaves fall, and go back into the earth. Thanks so much for watching.

In this episode, I take a slower approach to what I normally do in my videos. We explore a true behind the scenes on film shooting portraits. When I first got into photography, I thought professional photographers had some sort of magic that they were not telling me about, but when I shot with some of the photographers I looked up to, it was very simple. I made a solo trip to Iceland in December of 2016. I took a 6 day stopover with Iceland Air and rented a car to explore and photograph the south region of the Island. I stayed in Airbnbs and Hostels. I was there around Winter Solace so there was only about 5 hours of light in the day, so there was very little time to photograph and very little light. I never even saw the sun while I was there. ...

Super nice pictures. Diving a bit into medium and large format photography leaves me amazed how good the quality of pictures was even back then. As it turns out the low quality that we see in history books may have been due to the poor printing quality of back in the day.

after reading about WeeGee (Arthur Fellig) about 40 years ago, or more, ive wanted a Graflex Press Camera. he would have used a Speed Graphic with the focal plane shutter in addition to any shutter in the lens. i literally JUST got a 1955 vintage (first year of the Crown with the Graflex top range finder) and was going to test it with 120 roll film first so i got some film backs. wrong ones!!! anyway, i dont process film anymore (not since 1994) so its about $6 to soup up 4x5 plus shipping and handling and the WAIT! still need to figure if i put the bellows at the infinity stops or bring it all the way out on the rails. nice work

for those that came here and thinking about getting the kowa six: do it, it is a fantastic camera just keep in mind is about 50 years old by now and is going to need CLA and light seals in order to work properly, the viewfinder is bigger and brighter that the hassy and easier to focus

Good video on so many levels. I'm 75 years old and started shooting B&W in the 50's. What makes a color photo great is what makes a B&W photo great. Color is just more information.

You won't believe this but I recently found this same camera and it also has a full roll of exposed film inside. I'm not where it's stored or I'd check to see what film is in it. But anyway, I thought this was remarkable. I'll develop the film later. Thanks for posting this. Update: My film is Kodacolor II which was made late 70's to early 80's.

Etkar is a negative film C41, yet at 2:09 you show what looks to be a transparency frame complete with edge markers in colour positive? Do I presume you took a scanned positive image and inserted it within a layered frame of the edge rebates?

Haha, being British a roll of HP5 in the 1990s cost £5.....shot loads of it. I mostly shot it at 500'ish.. Back in the day your could just mail your film off with a hand written note saying, "I've pushed this negative to 3200, please develope as you think." Imaginge that, my local pharmacy/chemist and you could send a message as to how you wanted your film developed and printed!

I imagine you are a experienced photographer. Zone focusing might be your best bet, when you can’t trust your eyes. Just does not allow you to shoot too shallow of a aperture, at least with any confidence. Best of luck, and keep shooting!

Just a little correction to a very common misunderstanding: You don’t get the same depth of field with a longer lens because the lens is longer, you get the same depth of field because you step further back. If you stand at 10 meters from your subject and take a photo at f/2.8, it’ll have exactly the same depth of field regardless of if you use a 100mm or a 15mm lens.

  • @laurasaysyay
