In the uk the person who pays when drinking as a group is usually done in rounds of drinks changing after each round. For example someone might say "I'll get the first round" and they will buy drinks for everyone present

i used to have a girl, who was a friend, but not my "girlfriend".
    we went out quite often.
sometimes i would pay, sometimes she would pay. but it was always just one of us paying.
we didnt keep score of who paid what where.
    it just worked organically.
with my friends we almost always each pay for their own food.
unless we order a collective dish like pizza. in that case the bill is split in equal parts.
splitting the bill or rotating who pays for everything wouldnt work well because there's always different people missing in each gathering.
but for us the sharing of a meal is not about the gesture of inviting someone, it's about social interaction.

I usually spend it with family, but not this year. mom is sick, and went back to stay with her mother and my brother lives in another city..

Here in Germany, it all works like this, situation 1 would be the one who invited, pays. which applies to a clear onesided invitation. Situation 2 meet up to diner et cetera means everyone just pays for themselves and situation 3 your regular group where a rotation is established with one paying this day, the next one the other and so on. fighting over the bill only occurs when missunderstanding happen, mostly in situation 2 scenarios where one person believes it to be situation 1, which can be awkward if the person missunderstanding is believing to have been invited. but other than that, the system is pretty clear and easy, right?
