- Colin Williams, Bill Thomas, Mark McConnell, Bradley Palmer, Jim Cumisky, Tom Gibson, Jeff Koonce and George Curran perform Passacaglia in C Minor by J.S. Bach arranged for trombone octet by Donald Hunsberger. The recording was done live in Legacy Hall at Columbus State University in Columbus, GA. music.columbusstate.edu/trombone/
Back in the renaissance, composers referred to the trombone as "the voice of God." Pieces like this remind us why
Playing multi-layered baroque music, surrounded by fellow instrumentalists, one player to a part, is like being transported to another realm--You're totally bathed in sound, feel the vibrations inside your body; and the thrill of contributing to the harmony and weave is beyond words. Thanks for posting it.
Holy expletive, Batman.
I just teared up.
Excellent! The blend is really impressive. And holy cow, let's get those bass trombones a few bars of rest :)
I played this many many years ago in college. In this arrangement, nobody gets any rest.
holy cow
They can’t rest, unfortunately. This piece is meant to replicate an organ 0.0
Magnificent! I've been playing trombone non stop for 66 years. thanks for posting
Searched "trombone Bach transcription" and found this. Very glad I did because this is just what I was hoping for.
As a bass trombonist, I rather enjoy the sound that the basses produce in this video. In my experience as a trombonist and band director, there seems to be much misunderstanding about the trombone. It is our duty through videos such as this to educate the less learned on the flexibility of our instrument. :-)
Bass trombone has a wonderful timbre with a with a great palette of color from warm lyrical tones to powerfully dramatic pedals.
Consider me educated. I underestimated this instrument and trombones in general for too long. Having recently taken up the horn as my first brass instrument, I’m seeing the others in the family in a new light, particularly the trombone. The horn is gorgeous, but not as versatile, and slides look fun!
A Sackbutt it aint..and BRAVO to all you very talented and dedicated masters
Bach often changed his arrangements, mainly to reflect the availability of instruments for a given performance. In this case, he wouldn't have foreseen trombones, but I suspect he'd love every minute of this.
Thanks for sharing.
Glorious like the trumpets of a Kingdom but at the same time mourning like at an funeral
I prefer this to an organ anyday. A trombone choir is capable of even greater power and bell-like sustain than an organ, while also having far greater versatility in articulation, tone, expression, and dynamic. Once again, I have to express my regret that there doesn't seem to be a video of the fugue, which is my favorite part of this piece.
The last time I heard that was on a Eugene Ormandy arrangement for the Philadelphia Orchestra from the '60's on Columbia disk. Can't presently find it in my records. Bach seems to always translate well but this is a great arrangement and performance. Thanks Guys.
i am humbled before the awesomeness that is Bach on trombones
I see a lot of complicated, well thought out comments that compliment the performance. I don't feel up to that, so I'll say it MY way.
This performance is like auditory chocolate fudge: smooth, rich, and delicious. And oh, SO satisfying.
I am an organist, too, and this is my favorite Back work. These guys are amazing! Every note is crisp and clear; the unity and blend are perfect. At the end they even get a good 16' resultant tone.
Trombone ensemble is one of the best homogeneous ensemble. The ending was absolutely magnificent!!! Best sound EVAR.
Wonderful........ Guys. Thank You for posting....
Wonderful performance.
shivers down my spine, in a positive sense :) wonderful interpretation!
Bach lives
This piece is epic, I love at the end after they hold. Every recording I've listened to speeds through that part where I think it should be slow and majestic sounding.
The whole piece is amazing either way, I love the basses in the beginning too.
My favorite Bach organ piece, arranged for my favorite type of instrumental ensemble. I am in Heaven! Thanks so much, SchwobSchool!!
It was perfect how they changed from the Passacaglia into the Fugue ending. Damn impressive performance.
We're tackling this piece in bone choir this semester. This video is quite the asset. Thank you for performing so beautifully. Thank you for recording. Thank you for posting.
How awesome! And fun! Beautifully arranged and executed!
Would like to hear this in cologne cathedral! The soudn of this octet is amazing!
Gentlemen - gentlemen -
that was awesome.
Thanks for your commitment to musical integrity.
The last minute had my entire body enveloped in chills. And they didnt stop O.o
I literally listen to this 20 times a day.
Simply excelent.
I played this particular piece with 12 others, its an absolutely fantastic song to play for the sake of playing not to mention a joy to listen to when done right
Wow. This piece sounds surprisingly awesome on trombone. I also really like the dynamics used in the beginning.
The long harmonies gave me goosebumps...
This is now one of my favorite arrangements and performances of this. Superb playing!
Colin Williams is a fantastic musician, I am continually amazed with his broad dynamic range in the ASO. I remember the first time I went after George Curran, started at ASO, his predecessor was solid, but Curran is fantastic, such a full powerful bass trombone sound. Enjoyed this marvelously played arrangement!
Magnificent...
@colbone1 Yup- that's exactly right. In the words of the immortal JS Bach- "I just press the right keys (buttons) at the right time and the organ does the rest. " Both hands, both feet, changing registrations, reading 3 staves - sometimes 4 (and at times reading from all 4 clefs) and turning your pages too. Give it a try.
Fabulous, gentleman. I've always loved this arrangement, but never heard it sound this good before....
beautiful
A delightful, "lightful" arrangement of this fantastic piece o JSB's talent
Great sound! Wonderful control and phasing. Thanks for sharing...
This whole thing is so good but that ring on the last chord is sublime. The whole piece is a journey to that picardy third.
This piece is beautiful. I love how the arrangement combines both the Passacaglia and the Fugue into one. Wonderful!
ending is just epic
I love it.
Incredible, made me subscribe ! Thank you.
didnt expect it to be so beautiful!
OMG , dat finish was so gorgeous !
Great work!

I'm going to play this for my spring concert in between switching bands, and it's... AWESOME!!!!
you guys rock my socks!
oh chillax, it's just a compliment to the arrangement.

Low brass kicks ass. :-)
Really nice playing. Thanks for posting.
This is such A great piece and very skillfully done by the musicians, I am an Organist and have the utmost respect for these performers doing the piece justice and making such wonderful music. Often transcriptions are not that great, but this one is so magnificently done
bravo
Bach sounds great on any instrument.
Simply great music and playing!
this is epic
Absolutley Fantastic!!! Beautiful composition!
The last chord literally sounds like an organ.
GORGEOUS! This is one of my favourite Bach works and it's influenced me as a composer so much. I love your rendition of it!
I play French Horn & I love this

Bravely done, excellent.
good job. thx for post
I lOvE tHiS sOuNd!!! Its like a Trombone Orgy of eight! ^-^
@DonutOfTonality: There were no "real" intonation problems in this recording. This was beautifully played. Of course this recording is subject to critique ,but common. This piece, in the way it was played, was near flawless.
Freaking awesome.
Very good. Beautifully played, very well transcribed. And I'm not a brass player.
This is the kind of sound Bach had in his head when he was writing this for organ.
Man you southern boys can really play!
I wanna play like this Dx
Dude, i play flute, but i still agree. Trombone does not kick butt...it obliterates it...amazing sounds come out of 'bones...
I’m not sure what instrument is more epic sounding now. French horn or bass trombone?
excellent Job !!! Best regards from Germany (friendly professional player)
Grandi.........
i prefer the texture of this to the original organ version. There are downsides to having 8 musicians instead of one, especially if there are any weaknesses. But these players are obviously very strong, and the group musicality is amazing!
