Playing multi-layered baroque music, surrounded by fellow instrumentalists, one player to a part, is like being transported to another realm--You're totally bathed in sound, feel the vibrations inside your body; and the thrill of contributing to the harmony and weave is beyond words. Thanks for posting it.
This piece is epic, I love at the end after they hold. Every recording I've listened to speeds through that part where I think it should be slow and majestic sounding. The whole piece is amazing either way, I love the basses in the beginning too.
As a bass trombonist, I rather enjoy the sound that the basses produce in this video. In my experience as a trombonist and band director, there seems to be much misunderstanding about the trombone. It is our duty through videos such as this to educate the less learned on the flexibility of our instrument. :-)
Consider me educated. I underestimated this instrument and trombones in general for too long. Having recently taken up the horn as my first brass instrument, I’m seeing the others in the family in a new light, particularly the trombone. The horn is gorgeous, but not as versatile, and slides look fun!
I am an organist, too, and this is my favorite Back work. These guys are amazing! Every note is crisp and clear; the unity and blend are perfect. At the end they even get a good 16' resultant tone.
We're tackling this piece in bone choir this semester. This video is quite the asset. Thank you for performing so beautifully. Thank you for recording. Thank you for posting.
Bach often changed his arrangements, mainly to reflect the availability of instruments for a given performance. In this case, he wouldn't have foreseen trombones, but I suspect he'd love every minute of this. Thanks for sharing.
I prefer this to an organ anyday. A trombone choir is capable of even greater power and bell-like sustain than an organ, while also having far greater versatility in articulation, tone, expression, and dynamic. Once again, I have to express my regret that there doesn't seem to be a video of the fugue, which is my favorite part of this piece.
I played this particular piece with 12 others, its an absolutely fantastic song to play for the sake of playing not to mention a joy to listen to when done right
i prefer the texture of this to the original organ version. There are downsides to having 8 musicians instead of one, especially if there are any weaknesses. But these players are obviously very strong, and the group musicality is amazing!
I see a lot of complicated, well thought out comments that compliment the performance. I don't feel up to that, so I'll say it MY way. This performance is like auditory chocolate fudge: smooth, rich, and delicious. And oh, SO satisfying.
Colin Williams is a fantastic musician, I am continually amazed with his broad dynamic range in the ASO. I remember the first time I went after George Curran, started at ASO, his predecessor was solid, but Curran is fantastic, such a full powerful bass trombone sound. Enjoyed this marvelously played arrangement!
The last time I heard that was on a Eugene Ormandy arrangement for the Philadelphia Orchestra from the '60's on Columbia disk. Can't presently find it in my records. Bach seems to always translate well but this is a great arrangement and performance. Thanks Guys.
This is such A great piece and very skillfully done by the musicians, I am an Organist and have the utmost respect for these performers doing the piece justice and making such wonderful music. Often transcriptions are not that great, but this one is so magnificently done bravo
@colbone1 Yup- that's exactly right. In the words of the immortal JS Bach- "I just press the right keys (buttons) at the right time and the organ does the rest. " Both hands, both feet, changing registrations, reading 3 staves - sometimes 4 (and at times reading from all 4 clefs) and turning your pages too. Give it a try.
Oh my goodness, this is simply amazing!!!! I may have missed this in the about and comments, but is there a recording of this arrangement available? Bravo!!!!!
the only reason 2:45 to 3:00 sounded out was because the melody changes between each player every bar, meaning each bar would have a different sound. ive played this before and its a very challenging piece. well done :D
Back in the renaissance, composers referred to the trombone as "the voice of God." Pieces like this remind us why

Magnificent! I've been playing trombone non stop for 66 years. thanks for posting
Searched "trombone Bach transcription" and found this. Very glad I did because this is just what I was hoping for.
Holy expletive, Batman.
I just teared up.
Excellent! The blend is really impressive. And holy cow, let's get those bass trombones a few bars of rest :)
I played this many many years ago in college. In this arrangement, nobody gets any rest.
holy cow
They can’t rest, unfortunately. This piece is meant to replicate an organ 0.0
Wonderful........ Guys. Thank You for posting....

Glorious like the trumpets of a Kingdom but at the same time mourning like at an funeral

Bass trombone has a wonderful timbre with a with a great palette of color from warm lyrical tones to powerfully dramatic pedals.

How awesome! And fun! Beautifully arranged and executed!
This is now one of my favorite arrangements and performances of this. Superb playing!
shivers down my spine, in a positive sense :) wonderful interpretation!

i am humbled before the awesomeness that is Bach on trombones

This piece is beautiful. I love how the arrangement combines both the Passacaglia and the Fugue into one. Wonderful!
The last minute had my entire body enveloped in chills. And they didnt stop O.o
GORGEOUS! This is one of my favourite Bach works and it's influenced me as a composer so much. I love your rendition of it!
I played this particular piece with 12 others, its an absolutely fantastic song to play for the sake of playing not to mention a joy to listen to when done right
Great sound! Wonderful control and phasing. Thanks for sharing...
Fabulous, gentleman. I've always loved this arrangement, but never heard it sound this good before....
I literally listen to this 20 times a day.
i prefer the texture of this to the original organ version. There are downsides to having 8 musicians instead of one, especially if there are any weaknesses. But these players are obviously very strong, and the group musicality is amazing!
wonderful!! no organ can play with this wonderful sound!
I see a lot of complicated, well thought out comments that compliment the performance. I don't feel up to that, so I'll say it MY way.
This performance is like auditory chocolate fudge: smooth, rich, and delicious. And oh, SO satisfying.

Very good. Beautifully played, very well transcribed. And I'm not a brass player.
Very nice!!!
I play French Horn & I love this
This whole thing is so good but that ring on the last chord is sublime. The whole piece is a journey to that picardy third.
Well done!!!
Thanks for the deep pleasure!
Freaking awesome.
