Hi SMT- I have a million of these things lying around so here are a few things I would do to make this a better runner: 1. Take the rear (geared) wheel set out and push down on the armature so you can oil the area under the worm gear. 2. Oil the top of the armature, where the metal meets the plastic cap. 3. Put the two silver contacts (like the one that was disconnected) back at about a 45 degree angle so the body will fit easily. and 4. OIL EVERYTHING! Hope this helps! Greetings from NJ!

Dude, I have one of those from my uncle's collection. Mine's been a decent performer and was weathered by my uncle. The motor has been squeaking every now and then, but a lot of oil seems to keep it at bay. A good little model.
ricardlupus Really? I’ve seen a few German HO trains being cloned by NewRay when I was looking them up on Google Images. I thought they only made train sets in other scales until I came across a picture of someone’s modified NewRay HO train in some Facebook group.

Enjoyed the video SMT! I have an old Athearn ready to roll GP38-2 that makes a similar noise when it runs. The difference is after it runs for a bit, it goes away. I figure it may just be a lubrication issue, I'm probably going to take it apart and use my motor cleaning kit on it and lubricate it and see what happens. I thought I would ask your opinion, thanks!
The loud squealing noise is dry motor bearings. Add a bit of light oil to both of the motor's bearings (one is hidden under the worm), and it should clear that right up!
That loco also came in green and blue. It was called "Li'l Donkey" I believe it is based on an italian or french locomotive, oddly enough. Show some canadian heritage and make a white SMT loco with your SMT logo on the side tanks! I had to disassemble mode power's "Booster" which used that same motor once. Those brushes really are finnicky to get back in. :P These model power/ Playart locomotives can be very noisy, and often they have that "Hop" that yours has. i own three boosters and one hops. I think the factories did not take enough care and occasionally bent the axles. Sometimes the motors they get in bulk are a good batch, and sometimes they are a bad batch. 2/3 of my boosters thankfully have the good motor. You can order that exact motor you need from china for about a buck total. I'll try and find the link to the listing I bought mine from a while back.
I recommend getting a small locomotive/motor controller with alligator connectors on it so you can easily clamp them down onto any motor and test it and have some hands ready to do anything else.
I had one similar it was a model power. It was an old time. 0-4-0. With a log tender . I don't know where it went but that was back in 1998-1999 . Glad you got it running I think it needs a new can motor bearings sound shot which does happen but if remotor it will have better life. awesome video as always .. Judging by the sound of that Motor,it sounds like it is being run down;it is worn out.That old brushed DC motor,is a fire hazard. To reduce the risk of the motor burning out,and possibly bursting into flames,you should replace that old worn out brushed DC motor,with an AC brushless motor. It will alot run quieter with an AC brushless motor installed,and the risk of fire is greatly reduced.
Sounds like it needs a little oil on each side of the armature shaft bearings. Try that out, and give it another try on the track. If that helps, please show us how it runs afterwards.
Did you actually take out the armature when you fixed the brushes against the commutators, and check to see if there was anything getting caught up between the windings and the magnets. Something is causing it to squeal like that.
It’s always fun to find the cause of motors that squeak, it is definitely the motor bearings or it might have a bearing above the worm gear. Sometimes the motor bearings are worn out causing the armature to move around making noise.
@@SMTMainline squealing motors on old locos are quite common. I've even had brand new locos do it (those are rare though). Almost always a dry bearing at one or both ends of the motor. Usually bronze - and those hidden behind worm gears are always the hardest to get the oil into. :)

@@SMTMainline yeah i mean my open fram motors on my mantua locomotives did it too they all do shoot off fireworks when they not getting clean power plus its something ive learned while watching you do it,koko sams trains because i honestly never had to do it on my um bachmann diesels they werent run much but lifelike pancake motors regularly need a cleaning. Hope the suggestion helped I figured heck all the help one can get right?
Fun fact: play-art was made by model power. If you look at some old model power advertisements you'll see this locomotive, it came in a starter set. I know this as I have some old model power boxes with this ad and I have a more American-looking play-art engine. I hope this helped! :-)

I would never have something that makes that much noise on my train layout. By the way I'm planning my layout, need to do some work before I can get the set that I still need to buy on the table.
let the motor set in rubbing alcohol overnight then let it fully dry (48hrs) out shode clear the squealing noise up,. this gives it a deep cleaning it may also ruin it the motor if still wet. I do this only on motors almost dead Not Recommending this idea for all fixes. the noise is because the motor is extremely dirty or lift somewhere that is damp, it's a hard problem to fix sometimes. The motor in that locomotive is very cheap I use to have this locomotive replacing the motors are easy and affordable.

I think that is probably modeled after an older German tank engine built before the 1920s, but I could be wrong.

The bottom motor Bering needs lubricated
A drop of oil on the motor bearings should take care of the squeal. It happens to a lot of Tyco engines too.

Looks like a plantation loco, but they were narrow gauge, so Playart made it to "normal" gauge to sell for HO.

As another person said: Motor bearing needs lube and commutators need seating, very dry.
I got one of these engines for free but missing the motor and worm gear. Do you know what I could replace it with, or have one I could buy?
Smt my grandfather's bachmann steam engine is sparking around the motor how I stop the sparking?
Is the comutator dirty? Could be that problem. Like if the wheels were sparking they would be dirty.
@@mercuryoak2 That's what I would guess to be the problem. Sometimes too much carbon build up can cause arcing on the commutator.

I have the same loco, mine is #3. Had it since 1980-ish. Mine runs well. Needs oil to suppress the squeal.

TBH, you might have been better off sourcing a Hornby 0-4-0 chassis as a parts donor; but that's just me.
