I agree. if you have a strong frog (br) kick, the rest is timing, streamline, and UW’s. As a swimmer with 12 years exp I tried the CSS recently out of curiosity. I’m in my late 50’s and brought the 500 down to 8:21 in a month using a good frog kick, and I’m not even a distance swimmer. Was on my way to get lower then I had to get my pfizer vax’s. Hopefully I’ll be in the game soon

@@evanjohnson4133 It's very nice of you to reply. Thank you. Argh. I'm just an old man closer to 60 than 50. I started swimming when I hurt my back 7 or 8 years ago. I do a mile several times a week. I wish I had started at a much younger age. But I was a city kid growing up in urban NJ with no access to pools other than summer city pools. It wasn't until I moved to Texas 30 years ago and saw these kids swimming in clubs and high schools, year round, that I realized what a great activity it is. To me, watching a good swimmer in the pool is like poetry. You really do make it look effortless. But I'm also jealous of the little 10 year olds in my neighborhood with fantastic strokes. I've seen a couple of them grow up and go on to schools on swimming scholarships. I'm going to try the side stroke tonight so I can rest my shoulders but still get in the pool. My form is terrible and everything hurts nowadays. Thanks for listening.

How does a SWCC contract work with the Reserves? I hate to pester you, but like would you do the Pre BUD/S program on your drill weekends or on your own time? Or after boot camp your assessed with the PST and then shipped off to BUD/S if you qualify? I bet you get these questions all the time. I'm sorry if I'm annoying and overloading you with questions.
Hey bro! No, its a good question. That's my next topic, on my channel. Thanks for the message. 1st do a moc PST to get a baseline for yourself. Are you currently in the service now? If not, you'll need to join. Speak to a SWCC scout and get the requirements and know your numbers to be competitive for the pipeline. You have to apply for a conditional release to the reserves to go Active Duty. It takes about a year, but its worth it. I'm in the process of doing it now.
Hey Evan, I ran across your video looking for tips. I’ve been swimming for about a week give or take, and for combat swimmer stroke in a pool like this im at about 24-27 seconds from one end to the other. Im bringing my shoulder up too much when im getting air and breathing is a huge issue for me. Im trying to improve as much as I can, I’ve been in the pool for hours a day and feel like im getting somewhere. Just I would love some pointers!
Sure! First: what level of swimmer are? Beginner, intermediate or expert? Second: I would recommend someone recording you and watch the play back of your swim/stroke. 3: are you counting your strokes, on each lap? 4: are you swimming on your Dominant side and you’re weak side?

First, congrats on the EOD contract. Yes, what’s your timeline for ship out? 920 is a solid baseline for swimming. How often are you swimming & distance?Remember the pst- is a starting point. I have tons of pool workouts. Fins are killer, I’d recommend 2x a week and build up to 4x slow gradually as you increase yes.

One thing not taken into account is most soc pools are 50 m long not 25 so you’d be getting half of the pushes off the wall that you are getting now. Still a fast ass time tho. Keep grinding
Hey Evan, I’ve gotten the stroke down but I’ve noticed I struggle off the wall and run out of breath forcing me rush to surface without an efficient glide off the wall. For instance first 50 may be 4.5 strokes then next 50 5 then next 50 6 and so on. Any advice?
Yes. Great work on learning the CCS, how often are you swimming and the yardage? Are you exhaling air while you swim-through your nose? Conditioning and doing 50/50/10 are a game changer
@@evanjohnson4133 lifting, swimming and running Monday through Friday. Swim workout is 10 125 yard sprints followed by currently a 275 yard swim that increases by 25 yards every week up to 500. I swim in a dive mask so exhaling through mouth but I have noticed I get sloppy with it.
@@gavinhacker-ee2nu solid workouts. I’d suggest dropping the yards and focus on alternating with a mask and googles and see how your body reacts to the difference. Slow progression and technique are the best way to improve CSS
Great video, but I'd like to ask: have you been assessed doing this for a selection pst? I've been in the seal pipeline and the instructors do not like the splashy flutter kicks, the double arm pulls off the wall, or anything extra in general. "If it wasn't briefed, don't do it" is what I was continually told about things like that. I've even gotten shit for letting my arm come out of the water to touch the wall.
Have you heard of stew smith? I trained with him at the naval academy and had the opportunity to go to Coronado and train for SOAS. Double arm pull is apart of CCS. I’ve never had any issues and I’ve completed multiple pst-s. Where are you training at? Ur at bids now? Or at prep in Great Lakes?

And it probably boils down to individual instructors, some of whom likely just feel like they need to be critiquing something, even if it's not against any rules. I've even been called out for not rotating my body (aka just remaining sideways), which I only rarely see other people do. I'm actually out of the Navy now, I was injured at buds and medically separated

Yes, swimming in the Navy and competitive is a huge difference. For us, we swim 500yds, than max push ups and max sit ups in 2mins, than max pull ups and finally a 1.5mile. So its about an overall balance and endurance training

Sure. When you start your pull, on either side. Have your head glued to your arm. It’s good to have someone record you swimming and you can analyze the video. Breathing is about timing and being comfortable in the pool.
