The nineteen eighties has some of my favourite music. Some of the best music is from 1981; when rock & roll, rhythm and blues, and pop were at their peak.
Times were so much better then. Politics was reserved for op ed pages. You could listen to music back then and have fun. Not now. Oh well... Unless the TARDIS shows up im stuck in the past. Come on doctor! ( Tom Baker please!)

The 80s didn't really start until 1982 when MTV really took hold. The 70s lasted from 1975 (with "The Hustle") to 1982 (the last gasps of disco). At least, as far as the US went. 1980/1981 was a lawless wasteland of yacht rock, poppy cheese, imploding corporate rock bands, and the metal and post-punk coming from the UK.

Some random guy - unlike many who make the mistake of including too many US or the UK hits when they do retrospective best songs of the year compilations - you are refreshingly different and include a nice balance of Anglo American and Europe hits. Remember a lot of these songs and these times were great. Thank you for this.

I lived through the 70s and 80s. I was in junior college in 1981 and Disco and dance songs were everywhere. Disco was in the malls and the elevators. This list isn't representative of 1981. It needs many more dance songs to truly represent 1981.

4 songs on this list were also #1 on the country music charts. You had like 20 country songs a year crossed over to the pop charts back then, but today, you wind up none in some years. Rap and hip hop took over the pop radio stations which turned a lot of people off.
MTV was the absolute best in bringing this music into our homes. I was 9 and I literally would watch MTV for the better of the day and night!!! Sure do miss those days. Now, I watch MTV Classic, and between 2,591 commercials, videos pop up. (*Le Sigh*)
