      so many people trying to do more weight than they can handle.. doing it for "time/reps".. and basically not being strong enough to safely perform the exercise - that is, they lack all the grip strength and stabilizing muscles because they just went right into the crossfit and 'everybody else is doing it".

    If one goes to the gym, it’s to make oneself healthy and stronger. Whenever I hear or read stories of people getting injured at the gym, I think it’s ridiculous. Don’t do deadlifts or lift heavy weights over your head, it’s NOT worth it.

    Well my heart goes out to her, but this needs to be said. Respectfully...Videos don't lie. IF that is her lifting in the video as depicted, her form for that movement is entirely incorrect AND unsafe. Looks like one of those CrossFit gyms....SMH. She likely would not have been permanently injured if she was taught to do that lift correctly, safely! Definitely a tragedy that could have been prevented. 😓

    • @psrwhite
      @psrwhite Рік тому +15

      I am sorry she got hurt too. But I totally agree with you on the weight lifting technique that she used. I've seen others doing this and it seems so dangerous and puts the body into an off-balance stance and the over extension of the arms behind the head is a definite way to lose your grip strength and drop the weights behind the head if this maneuver is not done correctly! And why is it even done in such a fast way. Just my opinion. I wish her well and hope she can channel her experience into something positive. She is so optomistic, has a great attitude, and such an inspiration!

      First, I will say that I am very sorry that this happened to Emily. As a CrossFit Coach, I watched the video over and over, and the lift was done incorrectly by everyone in the video. I am surprised that the older man in the blue shirt next to her, doesn't have a back injury. All three athletes are squatting incorrectly as well. I hope Emily can continue to increase her mobility and live an independent life with her son.

    She's lucky she's such an emotionally strong person- tough as nails! Your spinal discs HATE overhead presses (of ANY kind); it just squishes them. In the gym, I do deltoid raises (like flapping your "wings" up and down) while holding dumbbells, and I work my triceps in the gym workout machines that let you sit down (or lie down) with your back supported. That's all I need for my deltoids and trapezius muscles. I have bad discs in L1 and L2, so I know I can't put any undo pressure on them. So far, those discs have not gotten any worse - in fact, the surrounding muscle (though careful, targeted workouts) has gotten stronger, and I have no back pain anymore. I've seen too many muscular dudes with bad backs.

    Looks like a dangerous, high impact move. I am older now but rejoined the over priced gym. I go very light...and still get in a great workout. Break a sweat and it's a good workout. I hurt my shoulder last year so it reminds me to go lighter- I really don't mind. I ran my fastest mile this week- even faster than when I was younger. My check up was great and I focus heavily on quality nutrition. Sometimes a health wake up call is a good thing. I had two of them and I am now on the right path. Otherwise, we are like the frog that sits in warm water until it boils. If he jumped in when it was boiling, he would jump out but he is used to the heat. Too many of us are used to things the way they are, even if our ways are slowly killing us. Be that second frog.

      The thing is you need to do heavy weights to rly build any proper muscle round your joints and do well in older age. I quite like the weights on the pully so they don’t just drop

    • @UTAH100
      @UTAH100 Рік тому

      @@lunity1111 Me too. Just had PT on my shoulder. He said it is also very important to strengthen the supporting ligaments and not just push around heavy weights. He really likes pull type movements- not so much push (like bench press.) He has seen a lot of weight lifters get injured. Also, complimentary muscle groups so if you work one muscle hard but ignore the opposing muscle, over time, you will get an imbalance.

      She was lifting that weight bar above her head as shown in the video. We did not see the actual accident but she was saying how she had done that maneuver many times in the past. Since it was a difficult and risky maneuver, the accident inevitably happened on that particular day. She has a great outlook and positive attitude. Hopefully she can become a motivational speaker and talk about her great attitude and positive outlook for her new life!

    Clearly it IS DANGEROUS Dana Evans. She had done this move 600 times before without issue. There are inherent risks to things. If your body has a weakness, over time, it can give. Her technique was likely just fine. I workout but go lighter- still get a great workout in. Less joint point.
