Why Do Lutherans Have Altars not Tables?

Why do Lutherans call the main piece of liturgical furniture an altar, especially considering we do not re-sacrifice Christ in the Lord’s Supper as the Roman Church teaches? Why do we call it an altar and not a table?

I enjoyed our email exchange over the BCP. It's quite amusing how the CofE and Lutheran bodies came to different conclusions on debates like this one or the epiclesis. Each of these might make one look more "Roman Catholic" which interesting enough. Each has had their ebbs and flows over the centuries as to what is "traditional" in said time and space.
I always remind people that the 1549 BCP was always always always was meant to be a transition book.
