Is Ishmael A Warning Against Bastards?

Moses writes in Genesis 25:18 that Ishmael dwelt in opposition or defiance of his kinsmen. Is the Holy Spirit teaching that God especially curses illegitimate children, or are these words teaching something else?

Oops, if God forbids children outside of wedlock... Abraham committed a sin in doing so. Or was he held to a different standard? He did eventually abandon his illegitimate son and his wife's slave. What does that say about Abraham, the father of righteousness? Or was it socially acceptable then?
