I love how you teach. I'm just starting to draw and I have been working on the eyes. I watch people shade so I generally know where people put shadows but you explained why they're there. I love how you break down each section into a shape so you get the idea of the 3D version and the way the curves work together. I have been working in pencil but I really enjoyed the way the pen worked for you and the cross hatching. Thank you for explaining instead of showing.
Thank you Alphonso for explaining everything in crystal clarity. I have not seen illustration of drawing objects with better understanding of lights and creating real 3d images with very little strokes. I have seen many, but none of them come close to yours. Again, you videos are not only educational but very inspiring. Not only you are an artist but you are an excellent teacher. Thank you so much.
The drawing is really beautiful, and your additional explanation of 3-dimensionality (as per light and shadows) presents a more solid foundation for understanding. You are a born teacher.
Just when I think that fine art is dying someone like Alphonso Dunn shows why it must be the benchmark of the art world. Relevant, Inspiring, and beautiful.
I'm a designer and artist by trade, but have always struggled with eyes. This tutorial is simple, concise, and informative. My eye illustrations are already looking better after only about an hour of practice! Thank you!
Your way of explaining the light and shadow and where it falls is so much easier to understand than most videos I've watched. Thank you for the "side" illustrations which show how you did the big picture. This is great!
Iv'e drawn with pencil and painting for decades. You inspire me to try inking. There's a crisp finished quality that you just cant get from pencil. Thanks for you videos!
I'm a tattoo apprentice, really trying to change my fate & get out of the rat race. You are the best resource I have found for the style of drawing I want to do. Thank you so much being such an excellent teacher & for making this available to all of us who want to learn & improve!
You and Mark Crilley are the best tutorial artists I've ever seen. Your art is amazing sir, and thank you for the tutorials! I'll definitely be buying your book soon!
I adore the way you teach and am so thankful you've taken the time to be so thoughtful and genuine with your simple explanations and lessons! I've always been OK with pen&ink but your lessons have improved my abilities (and willingness to PRACTICE) so quickly! Thanks again! Am already on Amazon for the book!! Amazing!
Well done! A very clear and comprehensive demonstration. The only thing you could add is the slight bulging of the surface of the eye where the iris is, deforming the upper lid slightly upward in that area: like a smaller sphere intersecting the large sphere of the eyeball. Again, great job!
I was going to ask about eyelashes but you beat me to it! Looking at your eye drawings, this and the 5 expressions, adding them could add confusion, as you say, most artists omit them. Thank you very much Alphonso.
I've got to say, this is one of the best tutorials I've seen. I love watching other artists at work, and their ways of teaching. What I particularly love about this tutorial, for a beginner, is that you don't suddenly jump in using the anatomical names of the eye and it's structure. While it's useful to know these names, I think a lot of beginners would be put off, when some people just suddenly whip out , the name of the area they are working on. You have a lovely teaching style. Excellent work my good sir!!
I have been drawing for a year now I make money doing it on the side by doing portraits but I'm self taught and I can't tell u how much this is going to help me u simplify something so much to make it easy to understand than put to use. Thank you you should consider being a teacher or doing seminars
I subscribed to you channel today, and I gotta admit it that you're one of the best teachers on UA-cam! You explain things in the easiest understandable manner!
Probably the best tutorial series I've ever watched. Are you an art graduate or are you just generally skilled with the more complex shading techniques like the one in this video?
At the 10:00 position on the iris & pupil there is a highlight that is a "hotspot". At the 3:00-5:00 position on the iris, there will be a subtle highlight (not as "hot" as the 10:00 highlight). This is caused by the fact that light is passing through a translucent object; in this case the right edge of the iris. Including this subtle highlight enhances the illusion of the iris being convex and curving outward from the sclera (white part of the eye). Nice, clear tutorial.
Thank you! My technique has improved massively after drawing just 3 eyes! Slowly working my way through all your pen and ink videos as instruction/presentation style is great and helping me to stay motivated! Fantastic work :)
I was so concentrated on the the Alphonso's teaching that I couldt get that he is back, I just wa surprised in the end o fthe video, I mean that he is speaks so relaxing that im distracted from everything. Thank you a lot. You helped me to find my style.
This is amazing Alphonso! It had a lot of things that I haven't actually thought about, like lighting and contour. Thank you so much for making this video. People like you make the internet a better place :)
I have watched at least a half dozen of your tutorials today. Not only are they informative but they are a pleasure to watch. You are very good at what you do, both in terms of drawing and instructing. One question: are you a professional illustrator?
I just adore the way you teach !!! I was just wondering if you would be willing to make an in depth video about how to shade and contour objects and anatomical features.I have a hard time studying that just from pictures. Great work as always.Cheers!
Thank you so such for such an outstanding video. Because of your tutorial I think I can now learn to draw a perfect eye, which I have had always had a problem drawing. Thank you !
it was nice to see u draw a dodgy sphere. I always think I could never be this good but then I think, ok, it's ok to mess up sometimes. ur videos are fantastic. u and peterdraws are the only vids I'm watching at the moment. :-)
Yo there you go being crazy generous AGAIN thanks for giving us real instruction and not holding back I have your book I'm telling everybody about you lol!!!!
Thank you from across the pond in the UK., Man your tutorials are great, I'm really glad a found your stream, Very clear and really understandable, and priceless, many would charge for this type of infomation, its amazing how such little features add more subtance to a drawing, and work futher down eg like painting. Thankyou ive learnt a lot just by this one video, looking forward to watch your other videos, PS Please promote your book when it comes out, Thank you.
2018 and i'm still watching these videos. I'm an oil painter mostly, but i do other art commissions too. I recently received a request of a portrait in pen, which i havent done in a while :(( this video really helped out a lot. you're the only page i know of that is this good aand does side-drawings for further demonstration. keep it up! :)
This is the most useful drawing tutorial I've ever seen.
Glad it helped :-)
Agreed…with the possible exception of all his other tutorials. Sometimes I pour a glass of wine and just watch Alphonso draw.
: )
You have a wonderful gift for teaching, not to mention beautiful drawing skills. Thank you for sharing your technique!

This video helped me to understand better how light and forms work and how lines move along with them.
Thank you!
The drawing is really beautiful, and your additional explanation of 3-dimensionality (as per light and shadows) presents a more solid foundation for understanding. You are a born teacher.

Another great tutorial, as usual... what width of micron pen you used here?
i dont draw but i watched the whole thing. ur talented
Nah, he has drawn for years!
SPINER naw wat? i gave a compliment
What I meant is that he has worked for years to acquire his skills and calling it a god given gift is kind of disrespectful towards his experience.
SPINER not really
SPINER I don’t think you get the comment
