One thing you can use for the next part is Raditz' scouter. With it intact, they have the perfect way to gauge everyone's progress towards being strong enough to beat Vegeta and Nappa. They'd easily know how hard to train. And if Raditz suggests gravity training, that would easily be enough to push him and Goku to be able to fight Vegeta, and at least Piccolo to be able to go one on one with Nappa.
