BIOGRAPHY
Tenor Michael Carty is regularly invited to perform in recital and on the opera and concert stage in North America and Europe. With the Opera Lyra Ottawa (OLO) Chorus, his credits include Bizet's Carmen, Verdi's Il Trovatore, Otello and Rigoletto, Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann. As a member of the company’s Opera Studio, he has portrayed Tamino, Ferrando, Don Ottavio, Alfredo, Des Grieux, the Witch in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel and Wilhelm in Canadian composer Dean Burry’s The Brothers Grimm. In September he sang the role of Laërte in OLO’s opera-in-concert presentation of Ambroise Thomas’ Mignon and in March he made his solo debut in a mainstage production with the company, singing the role of Giuseppe in La Traviata. Mr. Carty has been featured as a soloist on numerous occasions with the Christ Church Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys under the direction of Matthew Larkin. Highlights include Handel’s Messiah, Stainer’s The Crucifixion and J.S. Bach’s Johannes-Passion. He has also toured extensively with the Festivalensemble Stuttgart under Helmuth Rilling, performing the great oratorios of Bach, Mozart, Brahms and Britten at prestigious festivals in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Upcoming engagements include a tour of the UK with the Anglican Chorale of Ottawa in July and performances of Cinderella at the National Arts Centre in December. These performances of Gallantry mark Mr. Carty’s debut with Ottawa Pocket Opera.
