Ok here me out, airbrush the subtle black on the trunks, but leave the piping stark purple! Also thank you for doing this. I forgot how much I enjoyed the phantom growing up, and seeing this brings back all the feel goods!
Hey I'm sure you know as an Aussie there aren't a lot of comics to go around here. But the Phantom was actually the first comic book character I saw a movie for and read a comic book for. So it's great to see you give him that modern day drip he deserves.
I think Airbrushing the trunks in will defiantly give it that classic yet modern look. I cant wait to see you work your ever constant magic on this costume.
I can’t wait to see the finished product! The shoulder skulls were exactly the right move. Finding a way to honor the original striped trunks is AWESOME!
I utterly *_LOVE_*_ The Phantom,_ both as a character in general, and as a movie (Billy Zane is badass, it's true)! Almost as much as I love _The Shadow!_ Can't wait to see the finished cosplay! 🥰💜 *P.S. -* Did you know that there was an attempt at a *Phantom* revival, in 2009, with a 2 episode mini-series, also simply called _'The Phantom',_ with *Ryan Carnes* as the titular "ghost who walks"? Apparently the costume (incl. a helmet & visor, instead of a cowl) was so universally hated that the studio shut down any planned expansions into a mainstream series!
I think it looks good as is. Trunks on the outside is so old school and not done in the comics anymore. The straps on the holsters frame it out well. I don’t think the trunks are needed.
I think just the faint black piping will give it that classic Phantom look. This is a really cool cosplay. Can't wait to see the final result. I loved this movie as a kid.
Whoa! Finally someone doing the Ghost Who Walks!!! Chris I know you'll do justice for the Phantom👏👏👏 I think you should go with the striped look for the 'underwear' area, going with his roots of striped boxers. The fabric cowl would also compliment the rest of the costume as well--same texture👍
I'm a huge Phantom fan and I had no idea this was in your plans. I will be watching every part so that The Ghost Who Walks gets the love he deserves. A little detail from the comics that is love to see are the lines/seams that run up from the wrists, probably about 4-5 inches.
Maybe he could do the qauntlets but do them really short (4 to 5 inches) to sort of emulate those lines. The Netflix daredevil suit (season two and three) has really short gloves to evoke boxing gloves, snd they look great.
I would say spray paint the black on the "trousers" but still keeping the purple. Reminds me of that idea Nicolas Cage had when they were working on that Superman movie where he pitched the idea of making the trunks a darker blue instead of red, that way you still have the classic trunks but they don't stand out.
DUDE! You are amazing! The Phantom was one of my favorite movies growing up, so cool to see you bring him to 2022. Oh, and the gauntlets are a great addition! Keep up the great work Chris.
I love that you refenced phantom 2040. I loved that cartoon. I think gauntlets would be nice but have you considered shorter gauntlets that are about 3 t 4 inches from the wrists? The Netflix daredevil suit (from seasons 2 and 3) had these cool short gauntlets that evoked boxing gloves and i thought they looked great. So maybe short gauntlets with a back hand panel (No fingers or palms since the phantom usually doesn’t wear gloves.
With the amount of black in the leg section in the belt and holster some black braces like you showed there balance out the suit really nicely and then the mask will really top it off I'm absolutely loving how this looks the skulls on the shoulders look incredible I love that touch
I'm so excited for this cosplay! You've given me the push to get back into cosplay for the summer! Also I think the hand wraps is a cool idea, very much like your Casey Jones cosplay. Looking forward to the finished product!
Phantom is always been kind of hard Costume design, because, arguably there's been many different phantoms across many different periods of time. The Og Phantom from the 1940's the various live action versions, the phantom 2040 cartoon show. As such don't get too afraid to branch out a bit as your design could be a 'later version' of the phantom suit. Love your work and keep at it!
Then you could go really obscure and pick any of the variations from the comics as they have shown most of the 21 Phantoms from the last 500-odd years. There's been some amazing versions.
I was going to suggest a pectoral skull badge over the punisher style big skull chest, but then you went with the shoulders and, yes. For the briefs, I think the black piping is a solid idea but idk if I'd do the airbrushing of the entire area. Also, I was going to suggest black wrist cuffs somewhat like man of steel, but then you pulled out the gauntlets, again, yes. That's all I have for you sir. Hope it helps.
The phantom and the shadow were my top 2 favorite superhero movies in the 90s as a kid and I always thought Billy Zane would've made a fantastic 90s mullet superman!
I love that you're doing an adaptation of this character, I grew up reading the Phantom comics and always loved them. I love the idea of having the black piping as a sort of homage to the striped "superhero underwear" from the comics.
I read the Phantom Sunday strips when I was a little kid. His costume always struck me as odd, but so memorable! As far as the briefs go, I think having a nod to the old stripes is great, but maybe highlight the piping with silver. It’ll work well with the silver buckle, the skulls on the shoulders, the rings, and anywhere else you add that metallic shine.
Phan....tom Phan....tom, a few years ago I printed a limited number of The Phantom comic just 1000 numbered issues for a comic shop in Birmingham UK. A great experience and hhmmmm I have 1 un-numbered issue, the only one in existence from that run, A vastly underated comic that never really escaped the 50's stylings. Great video 👍
Rather than using black for the shading, I would recommend using either an indigo violet or payne's grey. This way, you can keep the black as an accent colour for the accessories to make for a more striking asthetic. You might also consider a touch of dark violet, irridescent pigment in the darkest shading. It would be a subtle touch. But, I think it could work very well! Jaquard, the same company that makes the "Pearl Ex" pigment powders you already use, also make a VERY good fabric paint, too. It's easily airbrushable, and you can add the Pearl Ex irridescent blue & reds into the paint to get just the right, dark violet that suits you taste. Also, their fabric paint won't leave the fabric gummy, or crusty & cracking. It's good stuff!
It’s looking great! And I think adding some black hand wraps to it would be awesome! It would also help with the realistic, gritty feel you’re going for, kind of like Daredevil’s black suits!
Hi Chris, about the trunks, MY first choice would be to not do anything at all on the trunks area (other that what you would already do on the rest of the suit, like putting some soil stains or subtle shading), just as batfleck suit and billy zane phantom suit showed us that although trunks look good on comics in real life those suits look better without trunks on, but if I had to choose from the options you mentioned I would choose just subtle shading in the trunk area (but still showing the purple color as you said), nothing more.
I’m a massive fan of the Phantom and it’s so awesome that you’re making a Phantom Cosplay. I’m loving your take on the Phantom. I also wanted to say that as far as making this Phantom practical and tactical, I think the addition of a pair of gauntlets is an excellent idea. After all, how else can the Phantom block on coming knife attacks with his forearms? The gauntlets are a must. It’s going to be amazing to see the full reveal down the road. I can’t wait to see how you build the cowl. Excellent job so far!👌🏻😎
I don't know a lot about The Phantom, just vaguely familiar with his aesthetic. Can you share your thoughts on why you like him? And where should one start reading?
My 2 cents 1. I like the gauntlets, they go well with the belt. 2. For the underoos either go with black piping, or as someone else suggested, airbrush them black but leave the piping purple. 3. If you have enough fabric left over after making the cowl, maybe try a hood similar to Assassins Creed. It might look pretty badass with the domino mask or even something like a batman cowl with the ears and nose removed. 4. Maybe darken the side straps, not black but enough to give it almost a ribcage look. 5. Definitely paint the snaps to match the belt buckle and shoulder skulls, they're just to shiny and distracting now.
This may be my favorite one you've done yet and it's only part 1....I grew up loving Billy Zane as the Phantom. And Treat Williams performance in that movie is...well, a treat
Hello I think doing the black air rushing around the area to give it the old school look wouldn't make it amazing I would also recommend an idea of Maybe dry brushing a little silver flakes around the piping to give it the more old school vibe of the original comic for that because it used to be 2 different colors in that spot, I am so excited about this project I project I am a huge Phantom fan I have many of the comics I love the movie and rewatch it every chance I get I also have the funko pop of it so this is very exciting for me
Interesting choice to go for that modern tactical look for The Phantom. Personally I think the cowl should be more like MCU Captain America helmet to embrace that tactical look on the cowl.
Airbrushing on the trunks to mimic the old striping of the classic would be cool. The Phantom is an ever evolving hero because it's one mantle taken up by each generation to carry on the tradition.
Just saw the full breakdown of the belt being cast, well done Chris. I’m thinking of taking up casting and molding for my future cosplay career. You are a pioneer and a master of your craft, your phantom cosplay is looking terrifyingly badass. 👻💀👍❤️🎸
I'd say do the original black lining for the trunks, and use the gauntlets but tactical them up, also the boxing wraps around the hands would be awesome! And use some red paint to bloody them up to make them look like you've, punched someone's skull in. And for the weathering, the idea that this "suit could save your life" maybe create like some kind of bullet impact/hole as if to give off the impression, the bodysuit has bulletproof Kevlar lining underneath, and you've been shot. And add some battle damage to the cowl too, like maybe a knife/blade cut in the head or maybe around the eye mask. Just some ideas, but still looking forward to seeing the finished product man, saw you tease this on your Instagram awhile ago and have been waiting ever since!
I’m so glad that you have decided to do this! One of my long time cosplay goals. It already looks great! I think that weathering the pleats on the trunks would fit this style better than traditional pinstripes. Gotta say that I absolutely love the holster and belt combo! Awesome like always Chris!
those gauntlets are dope chris. id just use some silver rub and buff to male em pop. they match the holsters really well. this suit seems sorta mcu-esque in the way it looks practical. a nech scar like Nathan drake would fit nicely I think.
Looks great. Maybe try some black and some black and blue striped shorts first to get feel for how it will look. Love it Soo far. Anxious to see cowl. Been wanting to do a phantom but figuring out how to make cowl on limited budget and abilities is intimidating
For the trunks, could look good. You might try to do some tests on paper to see how they look. And I love the skull on the chest idea. That would kinda be in reference to the Billy Zane movie because his suit had a faint skull on the chest that would definitely add to what your going for. Great Work man
Gauntlets look really good with the belt too! Those tapered lines all look well together. Have you considered painting/airbrushing the oblique straps black? Could break the suit up a little more and add to the V taper effect you talked about! Also the black stripes on the trunks would look killer!
Hey Chris big fan from the USA. The Phantom is a nice idea . IMO I think you have to go full Lee Falk OG look including the blue purple/black striped trunks and the white eyed black mask. I'd bag the chest skull idea too. I'll keep watching.😎
The phantom is such a good character, can't wait to see the final result, Chris. I know it'll be great. I also think you should go all the way with the over underwear, airbrushing and painting the lines.
I think with the cowl, and fitting with the more tactical theme of your interpretation, you could use the extra fabraic you got to make an under cowl then make a hard Urethane cast of a helmet piece that fits over the top and has the eye mask as part of it, kind if like the Daredevil costume from the Netflix Daredevil series
To my knowledge you can't get the Tiger Stong FX gauntlets anymore so you should possibly use different gauntlets, but I do like the idea of purple / silver gauntlets to match The Phantom 2040.
Seeing it's more a tactical suit I would leave it the one colour but add shading to it to give it some depth and the gauntlets are an awesome idea as it would tie in being the 23rd Phantom and then he's son takes becoming the 24th Phantom in the cartoon series Phantom 2040.
I know what movie i will be watching tonight. Just an idea, i think black gloves would look good and you can glue the ring to it. Or even make small skulls for the knuckles
Still think it's a tragedy the Zane film didn't spawn a series of films. Great costume, great cast, wholesome film. Can't wait to see how this turns out.
with the way the piping in the trunk area is, doing JUST the piping black is an absolute no go. i think the airbrushing could work, but I think ur best bet is airbrushing WITH black piping. EDIT: Wow, it looks so naked without the belt. It looks great, and the drop holster is just icing on the cake. Honestly, you could get away with the belt and holsters substituting the trunks with the black.
The gauntlets do look good, just that bit of black on the forearms rounds out the colour palate. In the same vain my vote would be to make trunks area black and get the classic superhero, undies on the outside look.
Or have the hand wraps going around the tigerstone fx gauntlets aswell to have some of the futuristic gauntlent detail show through but also add almost like a daredevil vibe with the wraps
Just my 2 cents here... 1. How about adding a couple of the small skulls onto the gun holsters. 2. Some versions of The Phantom show the trunks as being dark blue with dark grey or black stripes...maybe a bit of blue airbrushed on the suit with the dark piping could be an option?
I think it looks best without the trunks in this case. And I think the boxer hand wrap would looks really badass. Maybe like a distressed white or black. Wrap the hands and like a few inches up the wrist.
Hello mate. Obviously you didn’t asked me but I used to travel a lot as well. 1) if you don’t have the time to make your own costumes Etsy.com (I use the app on my phone) it’s an amazing and reliable place to any type of costumes. Amazon works as well. 2) do you have a reliable address for all of your future packages? A friend or a family member you can visit often to get your stuff. 3) I used luggage bags to travel with my costumes. You don’t need nothing fancy.
Awesome Chris! It's going to be awesome cosplay. To be honest I don't know about the skull on the shoulders. That's just my opinion. I thought you were doing a little bit of a more modern take on the Billy Zane phantom suit. But so far so good man it looks great. Can't wait to see the finished product.
I really like watching your Videos, especially when Im working on a Cosplay myself, like Im doing right this very moment. I sadly dont have quite thematerials you have but I make due with what I have, succesfully so far.
I think the gauntlets are a great Addition to the suit I wouldn’t do anything to the trunks tho and I feel like an air brushed skull 💀 on the chest would be a cool Idea maybe in a deeper hue of purple
HELL YES! love the phantom and have been waiting on news. Looking good so far, couple of suggestions I think the skulls would look better on the holsters than the shoulder and I think you could try some thick long elastic bands around the wrists to taper the suit to your hands/forearms a little more. OH and I liked the stripe idea for the crouch piece/undies too
There’s an illustration of the phantom by an artist called Shiraky on deviant art, which shows him in a tactical style suit. It has wrist guards similar to yours. I’d defo go with the guards. As to the stripes, I think they’re a must. Maybe they could be more washed out than a solid stripe.
2:47 Jesus dude, at least buy him dinner first! XD I'm kidding, I'm kidding, but seriously I only found this channel recently and it's been awesome to see how you tackle different craft projects like this :)
NO TRUNKS! It's perfect just like it is. Think of Billy Zane's costume from he 1990s. He had no trunks at all. Keep the gauntlets, but needs another gun holster. LOL! But when you do finish with this suit, is there a way that I can purchase The Phantom suit just like yours? I'LL PAY TOP MONEY FOR IT!!!!
I remember they made a Phantom TV show ages ago where they just gave him like a black hoodie and a pair of jogging bottoms. So far removed you'd have no idea it was meant to BE The Phantom if that wasn't the name of the show
Ok here me out, airbrush the subtle black on the trunks, but leave the piping stark purple! Also thank you for doing this. I forgot how much I enjoyed the phantom growing up, and seeing this brings back all the feel goods!
Love the Phantom. Love seeing someone else who actually knows who he is.

LOOKS GREAT. Love the updated look. I dig the old school striped trunks of the classic Lee Flak Phantom, I say go with the black piping!
I'm a huge Phantom fan and I had no idea this was in your plans.

I think the gauntlets really suit it and does add something kinda new to the overall look
I'm so excited for this cosplay! You've given me the push to get back into cosplay for the summer! Also I think the hand wraps is a cool idea, very much like your Casey Jones cosplay. Looking forward to the finished product!
Gauntlets are a must!!! They really add to the suit
Black piping would be excellent for color separation and also a great homage to the original design!!!
I think it looks great. I think a nice weathering along the seams will make it pop. A great start to this one.

I love this character- so stoked to see you put your spin on it!
I honestly like the gauntlets as being black. It matches the eye mask and gun holsters.
I really like the gauntlets idea! They kinda match with the belt!
I love the phantom! he deserves more recognition
I love that you're doing an adaptation of this character, I grew up reading the Phantom comics and always loved them. I love the idea of having the black piping as a sort of homage to the striped "superhero underwear" from the comics.

Looks dope without the gauntlets, but I'm sure it'd look just as cool with the gauntlets all done up.

I’d do the pipings on the trunk as all black, it helps break up the suit and I think would make it more interesting to look at
Nice to see you going to the Pulps... do THE SHADOW!!!
Looks great. Maybe try some black and some black and blue striped shorts first to get feel for how it will look. Love it Soo far. Anxious to see cowl. Been wanting to do a phantom but figuring out how to make cowl on limited budget and abilities is intimidating

with the way the piping in the trunk area is, doing JUST the piping black is an absolute no go.
i think the airbrushing could work, but I think ur best bet is airbrushing WITH black piping.
Something you could do is get spray adhesive, spray the cowl and cut the fabric in sections and glue it to the cowl
I think it looks best without the trunks in this case. And I think the boxer hand wrap would looks really badass. Maybe like a distressed white or black. Wrap the hands and like a few inches up the wrist.
i think the pants look great as is.. this suit is one of those les is more type things
Black piping on the trunks! 💯
Ever consider adding shoulder shields for those skulls? Like the Cap suit?
I think the gauntlets would be good to break up the purple a bit and same with the misted transparent black trunks
Hey Chris!!! Loves the video (as always)! Keep up the good work! Any advice for anyone who wants to get into cosplay but is a traveling solider?
I was thinking those under arm straps could be used as holsters. Might be sorta cool.
Boxing wraps would look really cool, similar to daredevils black suit
I’m friends with the guy who currently draws the Phantom comic and he’s pleased to hear that some people are still interested in the character
I think the gauntlets are a great Addition to the suit I wouldn’t do anything to the trunks tho and I feel like an air brushed skull 💀 on the chest would be a cool Idea maybe in a deeper hue of purple
I like your idea for the trunks Chris
I want to see you do a version of the samurai Batman. That would so epic.
You could try make some hand wraps with the extra purple fabric that you bought
You should get something for the hands. I think even fingerless tactical-looking leather gloves would look pretty cool
Looking great! Can't wait to see the progression! (also: enjoy the Wanted poster) :)
NINJA TURTLE COSPLAY SOON PLEASE! Been waiting for years now @cosplay Chris! :D
HELL YES! love the phantom and have been waiting on news.
Your “I don’t know?” Should be trademarked. 🤣
2:47 Jesus dude,
at least buy him dinner first!
So far removed you'd have no idea it was meant to BE The Phantom if that wasn't the name of the show
Yessssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oooh I love the Phantom
