- Today we celebrate Robert Smith's 63rd birthday!
Robert James Smith (born 21 April 1959) is an English singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. He is best known as the lead singer, guitarist, primary songwriter, and only continuous member of the rock band the Cure, which he co-founded in 1978. He was also the lead guitarist for the band Siouxsie and the Banshees from 1982 to 1984, and was part of the short-lived group the Glove in 1983
This is a very rare recording by Gothic rock/ post punk rock band The Cure in the original line-up with Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, Matthieu Hartley, and Lol Tolhurst on the TROS TOP50 TV program on July 3, 1980. Simon and Robert have exchanged their instruments in this video with Simon playing guitar and Robert playing bass.
This tape was recently discovered in the vaults of AVROTROS and we are very happy to present the full version now for the first time since the first broadcast in 1980.
This is the long version of the video that we released some months ago! It was broadcast on the same day as the 'Play For today' video.

The CURE and Robert Smith are timeless now ! They are great and winners. I will always love their haunting sound ! I discovered this fabulous band when I was 13 or 14. Now I'm 56 and I still do love their musical legacy ! They still rule the world and new generation !

@@that70sgirl90 it was summer in 2016 when i first watched that movie, i was 11 yrs old that time, i remember myself crying n punching my chair when i found out what happened to Jesse.. still cant get over it til now. i hate the ending but i like the movie and ofc, the characters, i was amazed abt how my name kinda related to the name of the two characters in the movie (Jesse&Leslie) haha! love em. :) .

Wow I never knew what a brilliant bass player Robert Smith was.
He's clearly playing out of time, out of tune and on a detuned bass, but the bass sounds absolutely fine! Only a true master can do that!
They didn't hide their disstain for lip syncing.. . Scorpions did that too. Prince on American bandstand. They sounded better live than the studio versions. Back then executives made them play to the actual song.

Whats with the crossed over strings on the Strat ? .
There's no Strat. Smith is playing a Bass. Not sure what it is. Could be a Washburn or a Yamaha. Simon Gallop is playing Guitar, again looks like an Epiphone. The strings on both are wound down, Simon's crossed the strings over. They're not plugged in. It's a big joke on miming the song...
