6:12 for the people that dont wanna watch the whole video
Bear: Entertainment. Ray: Education
Ray mears shows you how it's possible to LIVE in the bush with the right gear, but you can bet he would SURVIVE too given just a knife. And his shows actualy give usefull details on how to make fire, shelter and so on in the bush, which is why I like Les Stroud too.
The question is if you were stuck in the middle of nowhere, how would you rather be with, Ray or Bear?
No match! Ray all the way! ;-)
My thoughts after reading the thread of comments, is that both guys have an immense knowledge of the subject however Ray has acquired a lot of knowledge from living with local tribes and woodsmen, and that is how he puts his point across, as being very real very humble almost one with nature which is a better way of thinking in a survival matter, nature is with you not against, i find bear is more literal more extreme and sometimes not needing to be, he portrays nature more as a monster .
They show different stuff, man. Bear teaches survival. Ray teaches bushcraft. Bear how to gat out of the wilderness, Ray how to live in it.
As comedian Jack Dee said on TV- "What a man is Ray Mears, he comes out of the wilderness fatter than when he went in!"
Mears and Gryll's shows compliment each other nicely, Mears is all about "working with" nature, and Grylls is all about fearlessly overcoming and dominating it.
Bear seems like a nice guy. But for survival, half the things he tells you to do would probably end up killing you, seriously injuring you, or making you very sick in a situation where even if your perfectly healthy your still in great danger.
It's all entertainment. That's what sells. So Bear is doing his job well. And I admit, I watch his show when I can and find it fairly entertaining.
The truth is John 'Lofty' Wiseman leave them both standing
Bears answer about who is better was really nice. Just like he said they both do quite different things :)
@capnpaco Most of Bear's stunts are staged with a safety crew and often reshot many times until it's perfect. Most folks don't understand that Bear is an entertainer with a military\special forces background as opposed to Mears, who is a lifelong bushcraft and survival expert and enthusiast and was around way before Bear.
Les 'The Bushtucker Man' Hiddins has the best headgear and can get away with saying 'tucker' on a regular basis.
the one aspect Ray also has over Bear is the historical roots with regard to the foods we eat and his teachings show how to endure for a length of time
whereas bear seems to be very commercialised and is more aimed at self rescue ,imho i prefer Ray mears for the historical aspect of his work
You would love Les Hiddins bush tucker man series ,have a look gives some great tales of survival with the settelers of our land
I like Les Stroud. Practical, sound advise on how to survive. And he does it all alone with no camera crew there to bail his arse out.
I enjoy all 3 shows though.
my personal opinion on this from what ive seen of both men is that ray always goes into a situation with knowledge and tools any slef respecting outdoorsman should have an idea of and shows how to replace damaged equipment or in the cas of his making a canoe in canada a reliable way to get out of where ever you are and bear gives sound advice on life/death situations and as far as the bug commnt goes about bear F&S magazine put an article out that says bugs should be first on ur search for food.
ray is more like how to survive in wilderness over an extended period of time........
bear is more like your stranded and u must get back to civilisation.... do wats absolutely necessary and get out fast....
To start a fire you just have to chant "Ray Mears" three times
ray actually teaches the sas
Don't start this stupid war between these two people. They are both amazing and have the knoweldge to survive in just about anywhere. If you are true to survival and love watching and learning new techniques you'll like both of them. How can you hate one and not the other. That to me just shows the type of person you are.
@Gijops Edward 'Bear' Grylls is from a very upper class English background. His father was an officer in the Royal Marine Commandos and a Coservative member of parliament. Bear went to Eton school and Bristol University. At that level of English society it wouldn't actually matter where he was from. His accent would be almost indistinguishable from anyone from such a privilidged background. They all sound the same. It's emblematic of the class system in the UK which is still very much alive.
Bear is entertainment, Mears is edutainment and Stroud is crazy. I prefer Stroud, but they all inhabit different segments.
They've all manged to entertain, disseminate knowledge and raise awareness for the outdoors.
Good on them.
Bear Grylls wants to get out of a forest
Ray Mears wants to get into a forest
Seriously. I'm beginning to think the guy begins every day -- even when he's not shooting Man vs Wild -- by jumping out of a helicopter. We get it, Bear. You can jump out of helicopters. We're all very impressed.
Why don't they edit in the footage of his 8-person crew carting the camera equipment, sound equipment and camping supplies out of the other LANDED chopper while Bear, still in his harness, sits and plays Tetris on his cell phone? Oh right. Not too dramatic, that.
Bear reminds me of that action hero in the Peter Jackon's King Kong, the smiling charming guy, who people warm to, & who has supposedly faced *real* death & danger many times.
Yet when it came to it he was as clueless as anybody else, holding onto the coat tails of people who had some real experience, and *know* what the hell they're talking about, without any drama or cudos expected - like Ray Mears.
For those of you who only care about what he has to say about Ray Mears fast-forward it to 6:12
Bears answer about who is better was really nice. Just like he said they both do quite different things no need to say which one is the best :)
if you want to know what bear grylls thinks of ray mears - as in the title of this video - skip to 6:12.
@LedZeppelin13k7 you are aware that Ray Mears has taught the S.A.S for around 40 years survival training, the very training bears had. difference is
Ray Mears = Master/Teacher
Bear Grylls = Student
Master wins every time
Bear: Eat it raw purely for television macho drama
Ray: Teaches how different cultures cook/hunt/gather food and survive etc
Bear is a great guy though but how can someone take his tv shows seriously
"I think he's great" there you go.....
Ray does bushcraft and stuff. More useful to people who cap, hunt , fish ect... It's more education of living/using things within the out doors. Bear does survival, so after someone has crashed or got lost ect... That helps people to understand how to survive in wilderness, whilst trying to find 'civilization' or until you are found. Different things is what they do.
@TheFerret1337
Ray is an expert at not just surviving for a few days but actually living in remote areas. He´s dedicated his life to bushcraft/survival skills.
Bear doesn´t know his head from his arse, which is really strange considering his background. No one within his right mind do what Bear does on his 100% faked show. Jumping into unknown waters, climbing cliffs, swimming in cold water, eating and drinking from dead animals etc is a sure way of getting yourself killed.
If they were both put into a jungle, within 2 days Ray would have a huge treehouse built. He'd even be thinking of knocking up a conservatory while bear still knawed on plants and bugs.
He doesnt really comment about other survivalist. As I mentioned in my other comment about what Bear said about Ray. To quote Ray from his lecture: "Well, im not conna comment about other peoples programs. Umm...what I will say is that programs that you have seen over the years, are now being shown all over the world. And i go to great lenghts to show things as they really are. And the measure of that, has been for me...its wonderful for me to see
@Callofdutyboys Mate, Ray Mears was a bushcraft and survival expert when Bear was just a kid, you don't have a clue what you're talking about. I respect Bear's Special Forces service and his Everest climb, but Bear has been caught several times staying in hotels during the show when was supposed to be spending the night in the wilderness surviving.
what convention was that video taken at?
Nice to see BG after the shows, cool guy. Very genuine, topping it all off with a compliment to RM at the end, well done.
@TheFerret1337 Must I redirect you to RitchiePowell's UA-cam videos?
legend
@AACBrit his bio didnt say he was a survival instructor, where did u read that?
what part of the video does he talk about Ray mears?
When in doubt, pinky out!
At 6 minutes 13 seconds he finally mentions Ray Mears.
'im not so sure why he is so nasty to me but i think he is great' omg it makes me feel sorry for Bear
I like Mears too though - and i thought Mears respected Grylls?
Where, when was this? I would love to see that?
Bear for the win!
@norse27 Thanks for that post Norse27
what kind of watch is he wearing?
6:11 is when he starts talking about ray mears
Yup. I agree les is badass, I have both seasons on dvd, any idea where I can get my hands on some ray mears dvds?. oh and for everyone reading this... Grylls is a shock value kind of person, I have no doubt he can survive. But as for his show. There is nothing to learn.
@misternylon Sensation hungry generation.... Well put!
@looneycrewvideos .lol..that scared my buzz away..i had just tucked a bit of roach somewere between the ''print screen'' keys (for safe keeping) and thought i had somehow created a bad input signal.
I like the idea of your music analogy, but the disparity has to be a little more clear cut, since Zeppelin and AC/DC are both good. I mean, Ray Mears is like the Zeppelin of survival skills, but Bear Grylls is The Monkeys. You know, more about the posturing and trying to look good for the camera, etc.
Bear all the way!
anyone know what Ray said about Bear?
ttthat was verry lloud
WARNING IF WEARING HEAD-PHONES: extremely loud bleep at around 2:10
@econnofoot check out his website.. He's got lots of "ray mears" products with his logo on them. That's not necessarily a bad thing but some of the prices are outrageous.
@Interestsmayvary agree, its a shame that sooo many videos have pages of frivolous comparisons.
Well the ideas of the two showers are different. Bear Grylls is showing the survival skills needed if you get into the most extreme of situations, where as Ray Mears is showing the more mellow side of survival! He shows you how to go camping and use different equipment whilst out in the bush. Bear Grylls uses things that are found in the wild (plus his knife/flint and anything he is wearing) Mears uses actual metal camping equpiment so it is impossible to make a comparison between the two shows!
@Roflmeat Indeed. Whether or not it's all put in scene, he still does everything you see. Simple as that.
@looneycrewvideos
Its 2:07 and i think they are bleeping out Bears swearing. Not 100% sure though
that bruce lee quote is awesome. and i'd take them both really. bear is all brawn and a lot of brain, really; ray is all brain and a lot of brawn. there's a lot to learn from both of them. they're also both very entertaining in their own respects, which at the end of the day is their purpose on tv regardless of how existential ray gets (which he tends to) or how much bear presumes that we trained to be stuntmen. lol
what did ray mears say about bear
If i was lost in the wilderness i would rather be with ray mears.
Ye sure bear grylls is an action man, he can climb up mountains and drink his own piss from a dead snake.
Ray mears is a survivalist and bush craft expert. He can survive comfortably in most of the harshest environments.
He said Ray is nasty to him? What's he refering to?
6:13 what he thinks about ray mears
at 3:30 he says something like a hanging bibawack or so...
what does that mean?
both are quality in there own way meres teaches u how to live in the wild bear teaches how to survive emergancy situations
@KXrhyder547 : Yes i agree 100% !! You know when the show starts ?
They should make a show with bear grylls ray mears and les stroud, i would be a crazy combination
ray mears has skill, and i aint gonna lie i watched ray mears long before i even heard about bear, ray was around first, and ray knows his stuff thats for sure, hes not as "hardcore" as bear, and is more calm about survival, they're both good, but as much as i love Bear i think Ray has more knowledge about survival and more skill, but bear is more extreme survival, like last resort stuff, but i like both of them, they're great.
@SIMONSIMONDO well said
where?
I like em both. Les Stroud isn't too bad either. Cool video and Bear seems like a cool guy
No bear grylls performs in an action movie setting, if any normal man tried to do what he does he would die instantly. He doesn't teach you anything useful. But he is one hell of an entertainer and he clearly knows what he is doing.
@evildeathmonkey1 yes its true, bear grylls just did survival training to pass selection, ray mears has done it non stop for almost 40 years all over the world....there is no comparison.
@oosyaoo yes finding nutrition from the crew's portable buffet.
is that your son your holding hands with in the middle of the clip?
hard pick i will say though if i wanted knowledge and fun and to learn proper bushcraft i say Ray but on the other hand if it was a live or die and i had to put my life in my hands and to trust em to get me out in mostly one piece i will say Grylls.
yeah but Ray does more tame stuff that people would try to do in a normal situation, Bear does things like if you're stranded and have nothing else to do but do that
@survivingwilderniss bivouac: basically a shelter. Probably a hammock of some kind with mosquito netting and some kind of tarp for cover from the rain. They seem quit popular with bushcrafters in UK. Knowing Grylls his is probably wicked expensive since he must make good money.
Bear just seems like he wants to show off, Ray really cares about the wilderness and cultures he travels through. I have never found Ray boring, he gives alot of interesting knowledge but does not grand stand like Bear. bears a nice guy though.
@amazingbrimble i feel exacly same way. Just like Bear said him self they both of these guys do quite different things.
@chrisjackson1 "Bear's show isn't intended to be a real survival show." That part you have right. He's an adrenaline junky and is very mentally tough. His show is meant to be entertainment. Nothing more. If you want to learn survival you need to take a real course not watch your TV.
Bear is so humble and gentle. Doesn't say one bad thing about Mears yet mears does the opposite.
Bear grylls is the best.
A good and humble man!
@tommygg5 they are both actors.
It annoys me how I could go through the entire of scouts (7 years) and yet I've never met. My life is so plain.
I think Bear is kinda cool. Someone asked on a forum page "Would you hang out with Bear Gyrlls?" and I said yeah.. sure I'd hang out with him, He seems like a cool guy. I like his shows even though he gets a lot of flask for this or that. I'm entertained, and that's all I care about. I take from his show what I want.
@misternylon I am with you here , a devout drama queen, everything he says is said in a phony dramatic manner. Give me Ray Mears anyday!
autograph...
Grylls and Mears complement each other by their different styles, Grylls shows that nature can be fearlessly socked on the jaw, and Mears shows us survival skills in more detail.
ray is sound, true british, some of the stuff bear mentions, you wouldn't do if you was survivng, like running down a glacier??
Ray doesnt sell his self so much, bear is like a golfer getting out off a audi, ray would have walked!!
Bear seems like a fine chap, but Im apposed to Bear on the basis that if someone were to follow his example, theyll probably die. Ive heard some things on the show claimed that werent quite true, and hes a bad example if youre actually going to follow him. Ray is out for the money too but hes a good guy and Id go with his (albeit largely irrelevant exotically-located) teaching, cos it probably wont kill me.
i think if it were ray vs bear in a race to survive and escape a harsh environment, bear grylls would be more quicker, rugged and adventurous in surviving but ray mears would be more comfortable. he'd probably build a whole house in the forest and stay there for awhile
I know which dinner party I'd rather be at...
ray teaches bushcraft and that is about being comfy in the woods.
@KeeperPeace he teaches it.
