They come back 17 years later? My baby brother is about to have bilateral lung transplant maybe he has a shot at a long life. Unfortunately the doctors are saying if all goes well he only has 6 years max. 😦😟☹
Yeah, that claim was a bit of an eye popper for me. I'm three years in since my transplant. As far as i'm aware, lung transplants have only become feasibly 'common' since late 1990s early 2000s so there can't be many 17 year or longer recipients about. Statistics I've seen indicate transplanted lungs on average start to fail about 3 years after transplant. The operative words in that statistic are: "on average'. So, take every day as a gift, and as emphasised, COMPLY with medical instructions and hope for the best. edit, Dec 2022: Noe it is over 6 years since my transplant. Specialists informed me at 5 years that those who reach that stage without major deterioration or problems have a good chance of going past another 5 years. There are patients in this programme (NZ health service) that are still going strong 15 plus years after lung transplant.
@@rjlchristie was just wondering...how does the first breath feel? and do u get panic attacks coz ur getting more oxygen in ur lungs... do u 'overbreathe' to start with? were u scared to breathe? much love n hugs n lighting a candle that ur new lungs hold out for a long long time xxx
@@queeng5925 Because I was pretty spacey when coming out of a long general anesthesia it is difficult for me to remember "first breath". Personally I remember initially resisting the use of an oxygen mask and/or nasal oxygen tube because living with lung disease for a long time had made me terrified of any interference with my airways. I spent longer than many in ICU, and had machine assisted breathing for a while, I had to relearn to breath with that assistance, yes at one stage I was frightened to sleep in case I stopped breathing In truth, every patient's experience will be different depending on circumstances like their age, presence of any complications etc.
