Lung transplants should not be given to those who damaged their lungs from smoking. They should be saved for those who have pre-existing conditions such as cystic fibrosis. I feel so grateful for a second chance at life and will try to live my life to the fullest and not take things for granted anymore. I'm only one week into the transplant and it has been quite difficult mentally, emotionally and physically but I can safely say that I already feel better now than I did before the transplant. I'm in Australia and was on the waitlist for about 5 months. The doctors and nurses are so kind and treat you with such dignity, it's amazing and I'm so blessed to live in a country with free healthcare. Richard: I'm glad you mentioned the life-long follow-up. Unlike most surgery, organ transplants require you to take medications to prevent rejection of the organ and prevent infections for the rest of your life. These medications require monitoring and adjustment, so contact with your healthcare team is an essential part of daily life after a transplant.

My dad has been in the hospital over a week now due to respiratory problems. He got diagnosed with cystic fibrosis about 2 years ago. I find it strange that just 2 years ago is when he started to have problems breathing because he is already in his 60's. Just yesterday it came up that he might need a lung transplant. This process sure a huge one and it can be overwhelming. It is for me and I'm not even the one receiving the lung transplant.
