Great video Simon! Just wondering, does your work with the Yogscast come under contracted work, something else, or do you make nothing at all from them?
Yep, contracted work! As I said in a reply to another comment, I didn't talk about their stuff more specifically because I don't know how much of their revenue sharing system is public knowledge (but yes, if you appear in a yogs video you'll get a cut of the money that video makes)
For Twitch at least, The Yogscast has said in the past that the Company takes 25%, and the rest is distributed among the creators involved. Don't know how YT is split for TTT vids.
Was honestly wondering that myself since i found you via them. They frequently mention that people in vidoes get a cut of profits but am always curious about the specifics.

Another class video Simon! Very useful to see the financial breakdown of the different revenue streams, especially as a (very) small content creator! Keep up the good work, Doc!
Hey Dr. Simon! I've been following your channel for more than 3 years now. You inspired me to apply for a Ph.D. position and I will probably start doing my Ph.D. in a couple of months! Wish me luck! :)
Its always interesting learning more about the back end of youtube. I like knowing my favorite creators are doing alright for themselves, though a bit surprising how small a percentage you get from adsense. Id assume that percentage goes way up for creators whove been on the platform longer with thousands of older vidoes trickling in bits of ad revenue, especially for vidoes that are more "timeless" like music videos or well this one (assuming there isnt another adpocalypse).
One last question: As Soon as you upload a video of course in the first few days you will gain a lot of views. However after a week or two you still get views but at a lower rate. Does this have any effect on what percentage of google adsense you get or is there a certain time limit after which you won't get any money for adsense?
Oh it varies massively video by video - most frequently a video will have a long, long tail of earning pennies per day, but over a long period of time it does add up. Sometimes though (like for example with my star wars planets video) a video will get sponsored and so miss out on all the ad revenue at the start, but then go viral several months later. In those cases the adsense can be several times the value of the sponsorship.
It’s special how you keep people interested in what was, no offence, a fairly boring topic... but you made it so interesting with anecdotes and witty commentary. Love your channel man
I know of Finance UA-camr that during 2018 he made $150,000 ($12.5 CPM) from just 12 million views and he had less than 300,000 subs. In the last 9 months, his channel has reached 70 million views and he recently hit 1 million subscribers, which means he probably main $875,000 ($12.5 CPM assuming it stayed the same) and the holidays are not even here yet. I think it is safe to assume that he will end up making well over $1 million from just ads. He also uses affiliate links and has had sponsors. All this on top of his real estate! So hey, if you have a lot of knowledge/experience within the finance/investing sector make a channel and get your money!
Thanks for this video! I'm just starting up a science channel and thinking about ways to make it break even, so this realistic look into the revenue streams breakdown was super helpful.

I'm looking for a science you tuber that wants to do a fun experiment that involves my GPS drone figuring out how we can make a dangerous new electronic product much safer for the public involving figurung out what seems random warping plastic in their product that will eventually hurt someone. Figuring at what temp that plastic part of it becomes plyable enough to warp and cuz a shut down of product and at the wrong time someone is gonna get hurt and all thats needed is an oven that gets 220 degrees and use my HD camera drone to record the entire process and figure out at what point some fail and why? don't. I happen to have first hand knowledge on the issue. I will drone a record someone takes constant temp of the plastic and why so many mysteriously get hot and warp the plastic out of its molded shape but very crucial to maintain perfect molded shape. Theres a temp that different plastics melt at but theres also a temp which we need to figure out is the temp in which it starts to become plyable and warp from its own weight. Small 3 inch piece of quality plastic possibly plastic and rubber mixed. Im positive its a very doable experiment that just needs to use heat laser thermometer which i just happen to have as well. confident that I know the issue.. I just gotta get it on film to prove that its happening at a place they are denying it can but I have first hand knowledge that it is just a simple plastics experiment. Interesting video. One question I've been wondering - how does the subscription of those people (including myself!) who pay Google for UA-cam Premium get divided up between creators I watch? Though I'm seeing no ads on your videos, presumably you must still get some revenue from my views?
Yeah I deliberately didn't talk about premium because that just muddies the water! In my graph it comes under all the adsense. But yes, your fee will be divided between the creators you watch, as determined by your watch time. I think specifically 50% of your fee goes to UA-cam, and the other 50% gets divided up based on the watch time on the channels you watch every month (though this is probably out of date)
I don't make any money off UA-cam (yet, fingers crossed) but I am finding it weird how, as a scientist, my most lucrative jobs in the past year have been gained by social media, primarily Instagram but also one from UA-cam. Hi Simon! Thanks for making this video. Very interesting to hear someone actually talk about this, and happy for you that there's a general upward trend in your 5M rolling graph! A follow-up question... Many youtubers ask for likes/subscriptions in their videos. Does the amount of likes a single video receives directly affect the money you make (e.g. one like = $0.0001), or is it more a case of influencing "the algorithm" to make it more likely that others will see the video, and subsequently more views means more revenue? All the best!
I've been lucky enough to receive a grant to grow my science/ethics communication channel, which is covering my wages, equipment, and other expenses at the moment. Grants are certainly a very niche revenue stream, but if you're a channel that provides a public service in some way, e.g., through education, definitely look into it!
Thanks Simon for Letting us know how you guys earn money from UA-cam. It will help personally me ,cause I am planing to make a Educational YT channel sooner or later. Thanks man

1:48: Wait, so UA-camrs can choose whether there are unskipable ads or not? So they could all just not use it and it would be fine. I am okay with the typical 5sec ads that I watch completely, if I am interested in. But I hate the ads that I am not interested in and have to watch until the end. That should not exist, it even made me hate that company that I had to watch over and over again.
$43k usd in the last year is not bad. of course this doesn't tell us your operating expenses, so... separately, would you ever pay for private health insurance? how do taxes work for small business owners in the uk?
@@SimonClark I mostly have questions regarding those who procure advanced degrees just to give weight to their ideologically driven/science denying views and what to do to combat them. Like America's evolution denying Creation Institute and Climate denialist 1000Frolly who recently received his PHD in some form of climate science.
What you say is sad and interesting. That people should be challenged, debunked, exposed, expelled and rejected. Their academic titles should be revoked, I mean they should be stripped from their titles. The academic institutions that gave them those titles should be flaged with a bad note.
I would like to do more! The problem is finding a design that actually merits a t shirt (ie. that looks good enough for people to want to buy it) and also making something that has individual merit away from just me. I don't want to fill the world with tat, if I'm going to make something it needs to have intrinsic value!
Good question! I put that under 'contract work' as it's not a revenue stream from one of my forms of distribution, though it's a bit of grey area obviously. I deliberately didn't talk about their stuff directly as I wasn't sure how much about the revenue sharing is supposed to be public knowledge.
I have a science question. Planet Popstar from the Kirby franchise. If we assume it's shape is kept that way through outside means, how would the shape affect things? What would the day night cycle look like? Would there be locations that never see the sun? Would the points have less atmosphere?
I used to have an answer for this, which is that if you don't watch the first 15 seconds of an advert then the UA-camr doesn't get the money. But I'm pretty sure this is no longer accurate - I keep hearing different policy every couple of months so I'm just not sure!
I'm perplexed. If the grid is 100£ on the y axis and months on the x axis then you currently make about 500£ a month. How is that enough? Especially for the time and effort you put into these
On the graphs presented, was each category's position on the vertical access their individual contribution, or their cummulative contribution along with the categories below them? So for instance, if ad sense was ~£100 and then merchandise was ~£500 one month, is their sum £500 or £600? Either way, it certainly isn't a ton of money, but the graph style wasn't explained all that clearly. 🤔
Thanks for the look under the hood. Although it doesn't apply to your case, I often wonder about the way corporations 'influence the influencer' by concealed payment.
Hi Simon, something crossed my mind the other day and I wondered if it might be up your alley so to speak - How much harm are we doing to the environment by cremating our dead? Burning anything would surely have a negative effect with the release of greenhouse gasses but what about all the stuff stored in our bodies that would be going back into the ecosystem/food chain, what effect does sending it all up in smoke have overall? Anyway, enjoying your stuff and would love to hear your thoughts All the best

Great video, as usual.......what jornal your phd's work was published?
9:03 So, "Excellent" = "Brilliant" and "Visible" = "Audible"
But I can't figure out "CircleTime" and "TalentDonate" 🤔
Wait, is "CircleTime" = "Squarespace"?
And "TalentDonate" … = "SkillShare"? 🤔
Very enjoyable video as always Simon, keep up the great work :D
$43k usd in the last year is not bad. of course this doesn't tell us your operating expenses, so... separately, would you ever pay for private health insurance? how do taxes work for small business owners in the uk?
My income as a UA-camr looks like the heartrate monitor of Napoleon.
Simon, you've done AMA's (Ask Me Anything) before, do you have plans to do more for your newer subscribers?
I would, but to be honest I kind of do it whenever I stream on twitch so it feels a bit defunct to make a video of just Q&A! Maybe for 250k subs?
@@SimonClark
I've never been to twitch but I might have to check out those math/science streams you mentioned!
@@SimonClark
I mostly have questions regarding those who procure advanced degrees just to give weight to their ideologically driven/science denying views and what to do to combat them.
For being a joke the merchandise made a big dent, maybe worth doing more of since it seems to be what people want
I would like to do more! The problem is finding a design that actually merits a t shirt (ie. that looks good enough for people to want to buy it) and also making something that has individual merit away from just me. I don't want to fill the world with tat, if I'm going to make something it needs to have intrinsic value!
@@SimonClark couldnt agree more with you and I appreciate your attitude towards giving the best to the viewers
Where are the Twitch subscriptions?
In the twitch revenue stream!
@@SimonClark ... please excuse my stupidity...
My biggest revenue stream is to work fulltime somewhere else.
Oh yes, my revenue stream is 100% Google AdSense, a whole £3 in a year! But of course it's not a job for me it's just a hobby.
Bit confused about this, your graph seems to go up to November, is that a projection or mislabeled axes?
Hi Simon, Where would you allocate money made during e.g. Armchair Admiral streams? or other content with the Yogscast?
Good question! I put that under 'contract work' as it's not a revenue stream from one of my forms of distribution, though it's a bit of grey area obviously. I deliberately didn't talk about their stuff directly as I wasn't sure how much about the revenue sharing is supposed to be public knowledge.
Wait why does the graph taper off? (When you did the 5 month rolling average did you mess up the boundary condition?)
No, it's a 5 month rolling average so the last two datapoints are 'diluted' by the lack of data in September and October!
@@SimonClark that's good to know! Because other than those points the graph has a nice upward (might I say exponential?) trajectory!
I have a science question. Planet Popstar from the Kirby franchise. If we assume it's shape is kept that way through outside means, how would the shape affect things? What would the day night cycle look like? Would there be locations that never see the sun? Would the points have less atmosphere?
This might be a daft question but does it make a difference to how much a channel gets from an ad if I skip it?
I used to have an answer for this, which is that if you don't watch the first 15 seconds of an advert then the UA-camr doesn't get the money. But I'm pretty sure this is no longer accurate - I keep hearing different policy every couple of months so I'm just not sure!
I'm perplexed. If the grid is 100£ on the y axis and months on the x axis then you currently make about 500£ a month. How is that enough? Especially for the time and effort you put into these
Oh, I said the tick marks are of the *order* of hundreds, not that they represent £100 each! I can assure you that I make more than £500 a month haha
That dashlane segway was the best segway of all time
What about UA-cam Premium?
I was wondering why that ad in the middle of the video did not play ...
This was really informative! Thanks for posting it.
There are also Super-Chats which are like your twitch streams but on youtube live streams.
Ah sorry, I thought that was actually obvious - it's a cumulative graph
Well, that's how a true scientist works. I easily imagine that graph on some long and meticulous article on NCBI or smth xD
Is YT Premium included in AdSense or is it just so negligible that you didn't include it?
I see what you did there XD. You sneaked the ad in!
I am on the road to making extra money with my UA-cam channel. What do you recommend me to make better videos, #Simon? Thank you in advance.
@@GenieInABox Thank you. Well, despite my English mistakes, I think I will try it.
Brilliant viedo, thanks for explaining!!!
This was very interesting and as usual entertaining! Bravo!
Thanks for the look under the hood. Although it doesn't apply to your case, I often wonder about the way corporations 'influence the influencer' by concealed payment.
Very motivational video Dr. Clark. Thanks for sharing.
yay for making a living, that sponsored segment was meta lol
the last time I was this early, Simon was still at Oxford XD
Hi Simon, something crossed my mind the other day and I wondered if it might be up your alley so to speak - How much harm are we doing to the environment by cremating our dead? Burning anything would surely have a negative effect with the release of greenhouse gasses but what about all the stuff stored in our bodies that would be going back into the ecosystem/food chain, what effect does sending it all up in smoke have overall?
Anyway, enjoying your stuff and would love to hear your thoughts
All the best
I really wanna know about quantum physics, einstein's general theory of relativity and Heat and Temperature. Can you suggest something?
Brilliant.org has a good course on quantum physics
Thank you!
