When the anchor stores shut down & the library left, that was the final nail in the coffin. But it was already starting to struggle before then, to my knowledge. I started going there in 2003 when I moved upstate NY, when stores like 'Media Play' were still there & the library was in the bottom floor. I spent many a day at the library browsing the shelves! It was my favorite spot in the mall. There used to be an Auntie Anne's pretzel spot I liked, cool little popcorn & frozen yogurt stand where they had specialty popcorn flavors like sour cream & onion (yum), & a movie theater me & my family would always go to. It kind of sucks that it's gone. It was smaller than Destiny but convenient and cozy.
I remember going back to it every few years, watching it hang on.
First time (after i moved to Upstate NY) it had anchors, the theater, and it was a typical middle-sized mall like i visited in the 80s, but surviving into the 2000s. The media store was still alive and fun to visit.
Later it was slightly different... It had that tabletop gaming store, that skating arena run by a roller derby girl, and i remember walking end to end. Library took up a huge anchor, and any younger mall rats were just using wifi to play MMORPG. Military recruiting, eyebrow threading, and karate dojos moved into the wing where the roller skating store was located.
The last time i visited, the moddle section of the mall was completely walled off, you could only access the arcade/laser tag place. Rhe middle corridor was off limits. You had to leave and enter the other wing from outside to see where the roller store used to be... Almost everything was gone, but some mysterious hole (some multipurpose room? You had to walk down a spiral staircase and there was a door to a meeting room off to the side) Held a monthly "central new york outdoorsy club" meeting. The signs were photocopy paper written eith ballpoint pen.
My friends and i hung out at the parking garage to breathe it in one last time.
:( miss this place. was a frequent spot for me and my friends to hangout back in high school--- 1997-1999 I spent a LOT of time in Shoppingtown. Makes me so sad.
An other nice mall, successful in its glory days. Seeing it close however is sadness to me. Back in the day this was my go to shopping center. Much smaller than Destiny Center it was much easier to navigate. Unfortunately few folks agree with me, hence it is now closing. I looked fondly to this mall and my many trips shopping there while visiting Syracuse.
Very nice classic mall design. The sound of water in the water pool is very peaceful.

This place went downhill pretty fast. I saw a video from less than a decade ago and it was packed. When the anchors left, so did everyone else.
