  • Due to the special offer I'm currently running, I've been spending more time printing my photography which has been a personally valuable process during the UK lockdown. So I've decided to share a bit more of my process including some ideas on the presentation of your own prints. This isn't a comprehensive guide but an insight into my process of choosing a paper and then carefully presenting my prints for customers.

    Again I ask, have you considered creating a book? I am sure your viewers would agree. In it you would have to have a picture of Meg with a paw print for authenticity. I enjoy collecting photo books. Your friend Thomas Heaton is putting one out this year. What a great way of getting multiple images of a great photographer but through a book. This pandemic is wasting away opportunity to get out during the best time of the year to photograph. Stay healthy everyone.

    Excellent video. Thank you. I'm getting serious about prints now after almost 30 years of professional practice. I make handmade books of my work but am also putting together small portfolios of prints and have been enjoying and learning a lot from watching how others prepare their materials. Your presentation is glorious and fits your subject matter beautifully. I'm a street photographer primarily and so my presentation endeavours to evoke the urban experience.

    Simon, a while back I had bought a boxed set of your inspiring woodland photographs. I must say it was a sheer joy to unpack. The detail in your packaging, the presentation, it was like Christmas morning all over again. I even did an unboxing photo set on my Facebook to show others what a real professional does for his clients. Was I excited to get those images? You bet! I had thought of making my own frames or frame to display your images but I could never do justice to them with a simple frame so I have decided to save my pennies and get them properly mounted with a matte and suitable frame style. The biggest decision is whether to mount them as a set in one frame or to frame them each on their own. I suppose I will let my good friend who does the framing make that decision for me.

    • @SimonBaxterPhotography
      @SimonBaxterPhotography  4 роки тому +1

      That's very kind of you, Keith! I really appreciate the feedback and I'm delighted that you're investing in some professional mounting and framing for the prints :) Hope you enjoy the end result!

    Your prints are presented beautifully. Expensive to produce, however, and many, even professional photographers, could probably not afford those pigment printers and inks that you use. I've been very happy with the Canon Pro 200 printer and Canon's Pro Premium papers. Used with the Chromalife 100+ inks the results are stunning. My customers love them. They may not have several lifetime's worth of fade resistance, but I suspect they will have at least ONE lifetime's worth -- mine and my customers. And honestly, I stuck with the Pro 200 and the Pro Premium papers for another reason -- in a side by side comparison with a pigment print, the Pro 200 print was was more bright, brilliant and strikingly beautiful overall. It had the "wow" factor and the pigment print, while technically excellent, did not "wow" me. Thanks for this video. Your attention to detail and quality is admirable.

    Excellent video Simon; I like seeing the care and pride that you have for your prints: very inspiring.
    I am very interested in your choice of matte papers for your colour images.
    Do you find they have adequate tonal coverage, as I had believed that they have a narrower colour gamut and lower gamma in the blacks

    • @SimonBaxterPhotography
      @SimonBaxterPhotography  4 роки тому

      Many thanks, Bryan. I'm very happy with the results. The papers I use have a wide gamut and you're not really going to notice any difference. The printer can't print the same range of colours as my monitor can display but it's not noticeable in the end result.

    Personally, I use Canson and Hahnemuhle papers. The Canson semigloss and luster papers have much more resolution than the Red River papers I've tried. Hahnemuhle and Canson papers are also better than other brands. I've made comparison prints of the same image printed on various brands of paper. I haven't tried Fotospeed. Currently I'm favoring Hahn. Photo Rag Satin which they call a glossy paper, but which is a smooth nonglare finish. It holds slight tone and color variations very well and maintains the sharpness and texture of the image file. To each his own. That's why there's so many papers on the market.

    Very apt time to post this video as I was having a conversation with Nicola just this morning ... (her words and she hasn' seen this video, just in general to the whole print + package) while the effort, of course, is commendable and indeed puts a wonderful personal touch to each print, there will be a market out there who would most likely want a cheaper product and would be happy to sacrifice all the extras .... prints put into a simple packing box and shipped ... The cost of printing is already quite high per print and with just some basic calculations I would say the additional bits most likely add another 10-15% onto the overall cost (of course variable depending on volume of prints sold). Still a big subject of confusion for myself going forward in terms of which path I want to go down ... Great video Simon .. hope you and the family are all well ....

    • @brianjones6784
      @brianjones6784 4 роки тому +1

      Maybe those types of clients who seek the cheapest price and do not want all the extras are not his type of clients? This is one of the first things you should work on before starting a business. Who are your shareholders? What is the ideal client you would want to work with? The ones who say I can get it for this amount cheaper or the ones who truly value your work and your brand? Yes, it is also about your branding. Photography is a crowded field as it is, and one important way you can stand out amongst the crowd is branding. You want to to always be present in the mind of your client, and Simon has done it well. I know branding is very important for us, and we take it very seriously. If you are thinking of starting your business in photography or have one already, remember you are more than just a photographer, you are a business. Make it stand out...

    • @SimonBaxterPhotography
      @SimonBaxterPhotography  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the feedback, Nigel :-) Yes, I think there is a market for a straightforward print without the bells and whistles, but I enjoy the process of putting together a package that's all part of the experience. The initial outlay is significant but when you break it down, the stationery cost per print is actually quite small. Much more expensive are boxes and postage materials - the stuff you can't avoid. I took the little presentation pack away then the cost to you would reduce by about 4% at the very most - even less on bigger prints. Someone else commented that I clearly lack confidence in the print to waste time on trinkets, but that's so far off the mark. Obviously the intention is to also keep what is sent and not just through it in the bin :) Stay safe!

    • @SimonBaxterPhotography
      @SimonBaxterPhotography  4 роки тому +1

      Many thanks for your comments, Brian! I agree that you have to understand your target market. It's never easy trying to decide where you sit while also being realistic and authentic. I've no interest in churning out dozens of cheap prints every month. It can take a long long time to make a certain image so it feels nice to make a little song and dance about the presentation :-) All the best!

    Greetings, mr. Baxter. I have relatively recently searched YT for videos on woodland-photography, and found your channel. I must say I like your channel more than any other, on this topic. Now that I have seen this video, and seen this textured paper, I so agree it looks good, rather than using regular blanc paper. I will browse your wares and very likely purchase some of your works. I myself have been photographing for 13 years, and some of my pictures can be seen on IG. Am I correct in understanding there are different types of textured papers? Now that I have watched this, I do consider getting my own printer and print my own works at home, sparingly. Where can I perhaps purchase textured papers?

    The paper looks a lot like Hahn. William Turner.

    I love printing my photos and it was interesting to watch your paper selection and process. However I have a problem with the concept adopted by many photographers of numbering editions from digital images as in reality there is no limit to the number of prints that can be made, and the last is as good as the first. Limited editions arose from handmade artists' media such as linocuts and lithographs; they were limited by how many prints could physically made before the process degraded the original as every time the original was inked and pressed the crisp edges cut by the artist would degrade very slightly, and for this reason prints with the lowest numbers are more highly valued than later ones. For a photographer to simply say he/she is only going to print say 30 copies to give a sense of exclusivity and therefore a higher value is disingenuous, a digital print should be valued on it's quality and the standing of the photographer alone.
