This reply goes out to you in Jamal if he's reading it. It's a little bit long and I'm voice dictating this while I'm sick at home in my poor wife is getting sick too. So please be patient when they spell names with wrong for guys like Jim Hendrix. You just got to roll with it with this autocorrect stuff when it's this much.
Amen to that. I still to this day cannot get comfortable listening to led Zeppelin ever since I found out how much theft they did. They ripped off my favorite unknown band, spirit. When or lose or draw on that lawsuit involving stairway to heaven. There are lots of people that are not happy with that. Not only did they steal the intro to Taurus by Spirit to write stairway in my opinion although I guess legally I should say I'm wrong because the court found otherwise, but also what I found very interesting not covered in the trial and not cover it anywhere in the press is a little known bit that they also stole another spirit song to put in another part of the very same stairway to heaven's song. It's a mystery to me that the estate of the true writer, Randy Wolf, also known as Randy California as named by Hendricks when they played together when Hendricks is about to be discovered. They were supposed to go to England together, but Randy was only like 14 or 15 and he was becoming quite the project for Hendricks. It's the only guy in the band that Hendricks wide to come along with him because he was already that good. And he had cool family so I think he trusted them. He knew more like a friend than just a guy in a band, having met in a record shop and realizing they liked all the same music.
Since I brought it up, you will be a complete failure if you never cover the last album that Spirit put out as a true band which is called the 12 dreams of Dr sardonicus. There are a lot of people on this planet that know it's probably one of the best 10 rock albums of all time, whether people know it or not. It was lightning in a bottle, that no one ever saw because their management totally botched it by telling him not to play at Woodstock when Hendricks had given him the golden invitation to open for Hendricks at Woodstock. Hendricks never forgot his friends from before he was not a monster of rock and roll. He used to bring a lot of his friends from his poor past up and actually gave him real opportunities if they had real talent. I love that man. I wish I could have met him never mind watch him play. I could have enjoyed just talking to him about the world and figured I got off pretty damn well even if I didn't get to see him play a lick.
I'm not going to edit this because I've only slept a little over 12 hours in the last 5 days after getting some kind of weird fever from some kind of weird bugging around that my wife is now getting. So please excuse any of the errors I've made. I'm using voice dictation and it's really hard to edit on a smartphone when it makes mistakes in such a long post.
      Happy tunes my friend.

Yes, both this and Whole Lotta Love are essentially covers of the Muddy Waters song You Need Love. The Small Faces version came three years before Led Zeppelin, and the Muddy Waters original was four years before that. Neither band originally credited Muddy Waters, and he eventually sued.

Steve Marriott is one of the best British singers ever. David Bowie said that before the Small Faces they were about to get together in an R&B duo, David and Goliath, but eventually Steve founded the Small Faces, and David carried on with this music genre for a few more years, before releasing his first album as David Bowie. By the way, Robert Plant was a die-hard Marriott fan, and he reportedly used to follow him and his band everywhere as a young lad!

"You Need Love" was written by Willie Dixon, a prolific blues songwriter, and performer. Steve Marriot and Ronnie Lane adapted the song for The Small Faces. Don Arden, their manager and Sharon Osborne's father (Ozzy Osborne's wife), only put Marriot and Lane's names on the copyright because that seems to be how he managed his acts. Dixon didn't know. Led Zeppelin "borrowed" the song and gave credit to all band members. Dixon found out and sued them. They settled out of court. There were many blues songwriters, particularly black songwriters, who had music they'd written stolen by other groups. They didn't always find out that they'd appropriated their work like Dixon, Sonny Boy Williamson, Robert Johnson, Chester Burnett (aka Howlin' Wolf), etc. Unfortunately, many black artists lived in poverty while others made money performing the songs they'd written.

So true, Steve Marriott was smitten with Jenny Rylance, who was involved in a 4 yr romance with the then pretty much unknown singer - ROD STEWART. Jenny has written that she liked Steve as a friend, but he wanted more. Everytime she and Rod would break up, Steve would start wooing her, then she & Rod would make up and Steve would be heartbroken. Some of his best songs were written for Jenny - "All or Nothing", "Tin Soldier", "Afterglow", and "Autumn Stone" (my favorite). If you listen to the lyrics of "Get Yourself Together" you might believe as I do that this is also a "Jenny" song - it fits their situation perfectly.
Ironically, when Steve was wooing Jenny with "Tin Soldier", he was having a love affair with his backup singer, the beautiful PP Arnold. When Steve finally caught Jenny, PP started an affair with - ROD STEWART!! When Steve quit Small Faces to form Humble Pie, who took his place in SF's? ROD STEWART! What a small world 1960's London was and Rod & Steve 's live were intertwined over and over.

See the Y.Tube article "Led Zeppelin's 10 Boldest Rip-offs - Rolling Stone", (which gives musical examples). Page fought a legal battle with the songwriter Willie Dixon so that Dixon couldn't collect royalties - so they weren't just paying tribute to these old blues guys like some say. Then there are "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You", "The Lemon Song", "Black Mountain Side", "Dazed and Confused", and more. See the original "Dazed and Confused" by Jake Holmes, who opened for The Yardbirds when Page was with them. Page once said it was easier to apologize than to ask for permission, and that some of their problems came from Plant not changing the lyrics enough. It seems he hasn't changed much, because last I heard he was arguing with Billy Gibbons, about songs they were going to have on an album they were going to put out together. Also see the mash up called "Muddy Zeppelin".

@Jamel_AKA_Jamal: IIRC this track is from their first album on UK Decca from 1966. Like a lot of UK bands at the time they were influenced by US blues and soul acts. They probably heard the Muddy Waters version ua-cam.com/video/-KsiLlUWoZM/v-deo.html of Willie Dixon's tune as it was released in the UK at the end of 1963. There's a nod to Little Luther's "Eenie Meenie Minie Moe" (1964) ua-cam.com/video/WS4nMw0c3GE/v-deo.html and Chris Kenner's "Land Of 1000 Dances" (single released UK 1965) ua-cam.com/video/HT1hmyozZQw/v-deo.html . There's even a mention of Major Lance's "Monkey Time" (1963) ua-cam.com/video/PAX5GB2hcRA/v-deo.html.
I suspect this was a studio jam or part of their live set which made it onto the album and credited to Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane as they were the major writers for the band.
In any event forget about Led Zepplin altogether and concentrate on a REAL rocking band - The Small Faces. Here's their first record "What'Cha Gonna Do About It" (1965) ua-cam.com/video/DD3VK14QK-g/v-deo.html or try "Sha La La La Lee" (1966) ua-cam.com/video/pKC4MUtbDBc/v-deo.html

If you want to listen to the song "You Need Love" that was the original written by blues artist Willie Dixon, here is the URL to an upload of the 1962 recording sung by Muddy Waters: ua-cam.com/video/WoqR7ztdTCg/v-deo.html
... Dixon sued Led Zeppelin in 1985 for royalties, and they settled out of court for an undisclosed sum, with Dixon also getting credit as a co-writer. Not only did Zeppelin appropriate much of Dixon's original song in their 1969 "Whole Lotta Love," Robert Plant unabashedly ripped off Steve Marriott's vocal style for more than just "Whole Lotta Love," though it is clearly obvious in that song.
I'm glad Dixon finally got credit for his work, and eventually more recognition for the soulful artistry of Muddy Waters. Credit needs to be given where credit is due, and so much was denied many amazing blues artists, especially those who inspired a wave of British and American bands and individuals who continued innovating and creating from a solid core foundation of incredible music they admired.
I know that both Led Zeppelin and The Small Faces should have credited the original artists when they should have, but I'm sad that Steve Marriott didn't get the credit (or timely reward) that his vocals most assuredly deserved. He was so amazing. Please... if you appreciate an artist's work, whether it's the songwriting, arrangement, vocals, style, musicianship, or lyrics... be sure to share your discovery and sources with others, give proper credit, support their work as you can, enjoy the rich legacy we've been left, and help keep great music alive.

Both Robert and Jimmy were huge Marriott fans. Robert used to follow the band around ang hang out backstage where the boys would send him out for cigs and stuff. SF's opened each show with this song, so that is where Robert heard it. When a journalist asked Robert if he was influenced by Marriott, Robert replied "I wanted to f**king BE Steve Marriott!"

The FULL truth is this: Willie Dixon, a.k.a.-Mr. Blues, and a bassist by trade, also was an incredible writer. He wrote for most every Blues musician of his time! Dixon wrote "You Need Love" for Muddy Waters and Muddy recorded it in 1962. Steve Marriott covered the song as "You Need Lovin'" in 1966, and Page and Plant were Small Faces fans, as were a large number of Mods and others who would become famous in their own right. Page and Plant heard the band play their version of "You Need Lovin" live, and they went up to Steve after the show and asked him if he wrote it. Marriott replied, "NO! That's a Muddy Waters tune. We just amped it up!" Zeppelin credited all band members with the writing of "Whole Lotta Love," with none due to Willie Dixon. His manager told him to sue. They did, won, and all printing of the Led Zeppelin records from that point on credit Willie Dixon and themselves!
