    I just re-watched this video and I don’t think I emphasised before just how much I loved your measured and erudite presentation. Other UA-camrs fall into the mistake of a garbled message by speaking far too quickly. You don’t and as a result the information you impart is far more likely to sink in. That’s my take on it for what it’s worth. I also like your ‘peace’ sign off.

    i had x-pro2. Loved it. Sold it because i barely had time to shoot due to my new job. I thought about getting X100V but it was out of stock everywhere. I got myself used Panasonic GX85 for $200. Got sigma 16/30/56mm f1.4 trio. Waiting on Leica 15mm F1.7 to arrive. Its super fun to use. It would be a perfect camera if it had fujis film simulations.

      Yeah that would be great if they had the simulations in camera. If willing to bring them into post, I’d check to see if Cobalt image has the base profile for the gx85. Their Fujifilm sim profiles are great. I use them on my Sony cameras to bring classic chrome, nostalgic negative, astia, and acros to Sony

      I upgraded Panasonic GF1 with 20mm/f1.7 to Fuji X100V year and half ago and to Panasonic G80 five years ago. GF1 was my favorite and most used camera and X100V is quite similar sharing it's pros and cons: lens without IS make camera useless for video and it focuses slowly. Advantage of X100V is minimal focus distance being just a few centimeters and by far superior high ISO. But image processing is different. It's easier to recover highlights on G80, it's easier to recover shadows on X100V and camera has different exposure, Fuji has longer exposure times and less headroom for highlight recovery and that's part of why it has super low noise and JPEGs have higher contrast.

    I owned the X100V but actually sold it, mainly due to the focus hunting of the lens. Sure it is in terms of features a great camera, but I found the entire experience not what I expected.

      the X100V out of the box has a very annoying focus hunting aspect that i personally didn't like, was considering selling mine however ended up tinkering with the settings. turns out you can turn off constant auto focus very conveniently, after that it only focuses once you click the shutter button to actually take a picture. turning off constant auto focus also helps with battery life.

    I've used an X100 since it's release and even with it's quirks and and the fact that it's lagging behind in megapixels, I still love using it. I ordered an X100V and I can't wait to see how far it's come... if it ever shows up that is. lol

    I've owned every model of the X100 since the original. Some of my best photographs and portraits came out of that original X100. I purchased a X100V back in 2020, and like you said in your video, bought and sold. I used the money for a XT-4 with the classic 35mm f1.4. I still look back and miss the X100 though. I often catch myself ignoring the XT-4, I've left it for months in my bedroom. Yeah, it's a solid camera, but something about the X100 line that made me more willing to carry it with me everywhere I went. I'm contemplating on selling the XT-4 and going back to the X100V.

    Pizza - Worth the Hype?

  • @kirkthibault3204
    @kirkthibault3204 Рік тому

    I have owned the X100V and the XPro3. I still own the original X100. The X100V is unique in some aspects, but it’s unobtanium status is fueled by hype. It’s a perfectly fine camera, especially if you like the aesthetic of the analog dials. That said, it’s ergonomics are dreadful. It’s leaf shutter is versatile, but completely ruins the bokeh at wide open once the shutter speed is faster than 1/250 or so - for example, shooting outside, at base ISO, even with the ND filter enabled. The rear articulating LCD panel failed on mine with fewer that 1000 shutter actuations and had to be replaced, about two months after the warranty had elapsed.
    The insights you offer about the X100V living between worlds is spot on. As much as most people would like to believe that they will use the rangefinder OVF to shoot, they won’t. It is nowhere near a Leica or most film rangefinder windows and focus by wire makes the whole “analog” experience less than desirable, especially when you can just fall back on AF. It’s not quite a gimmick, but it is not as straightforward as a true rangefinder, especially if you wear glasses.
    If you bought a previous generation X100 and bought the tele or wide adapters, you can use them on the X100V and you can mod them very easily to be autodetected (you glue a small magnet inside the mounting flange -Google it).
    I have also owned the GR, and I currently own the GRII and GRIIIX. these cameras may be better suited for most folks looking for an X100V but available and affordable, with even more thoughtful features, better controls, and in the case of the GRIIIX, ibis and a longer focal length. They also have focal length adapters and are actually pocketable.
    Just my 2 cents - most coverage of the X100V neglects some of its less than hyped drawbacks.

    • @Lonnie.G
      @Lonnie.G  Рік тому

      Spot on! Not a bad camera, and can be a lot of fun, but it’s insanely overhyped at the moment. You make some great points. On the used market I think $600-700 for the x100f is fair, and I think up to $1100-1200 used for an x100v. I can’t support anything higher than that used, and over retail, even for new, is insane to me.

    Finally a video with a more grounded perspective. I’ll add that this camera can be use for professional work under certain situations. Documentary photography for a small client, small weddings… and even if you only shoot street photography but you sell art prints, it can give you an income if you, as a photographer, are good enough. Of course there are many more capable cameras if you want more or different features.
    I once shoot an entirely national campaign with a 35mm f1.4 and a Canon 5D Mk III, all at f/8. If I had this camera back then, I’m sure that would have been more than enough technically for the campaign requirements. Great video.

    • @Lonnie.G
      @Lonnie.G  Рік тому

      It's technically, and literally, not the same thing. Did you watch the video? Leaf, shutter, build in ND filter, and hybrid optical and hybrid OVF are the unique features I mentioned about the X100 line. The X-E4 has none of those things. Not trying to be argumentative, just want to answer your question. The X-E line is great but it's not the same, and that's ok. if you don't value those things I mentioned then the X-E4 is likely a better buy. Another consideration is if you 23mm lens, then the XE4 is not quite as small as the X100 with it's pancake 23mm lens. If you want interchangeable lenses then there's really no reason to even compare with the X100 at all -- they are completely different in some major ways.

    As with any recent Fuji camera, is the only viable way to shoot JPEGs. Really, the JPEG quality of these cameras are just amazing! I wanted the X100V since its release, a couple of years ago but many factors kept me away. For example the cost. It isn't better than my trustee a6000 paired with a Samyang 24mm f1.8 and the Sony is cheaper, has better AF and wider dynamic range (in RAW) and the ability to pick any lens. The other factor is the ergonomics. Again, the a6000 is the same size and it has a real hand grip on the right. The X100V is just a pain if you are shooting for long periods without a strap. And last but not least: the manual focus is clearly an afterthought on X100V. Too small, STM focus ring. You can't do serious MF work on this camera... But i know that there's a certain audience for this camera and and only a few choices out there. The Leica Q (out of the question for most people), the Hasseblads (too) and the Ricoh GRIII(x). Between them the X100V seem like the most decent choice.

    Tip: with your zen-like presentation, you just don’t need background music. It’s distracting and actually, quite annoying.

      Thanks. No music on my latest video. Though there is some mic feedback from moving around - I’m learning. Let me know what you think on that video.

      @@Lonnie.G Hi Lonnie, I must say, I don't watch many YT videos. This was an excellent one. Super well written! (I assume it was written?) Anyway, I also thought the music was a well chosen accompaniment to your voice. I haven't watched any of your other videos, but I will.
      I also have a question: If not one of these, then what? I have a Sony a6000 that I don't like or use very much. I prefer my film camera. I am new to this.
